You people should really stop getting sponsor-ships from warthunder. Game has incredibly "corrupt" micro-transaction system. To say it's pay to win is to massively understate that. Devs have a history of silencing any criticism of the game and it's economy, as well as using bots to boost their upvote rate on steam. There is an incredible russian bias in the game, as, well... portraying russian as weak militarlly is literally banned action in russia and may land you in court. Oh, yea and they support invasion of Ukraine. The fact that warthunder is not sanctioned just shows how our law system in the west is full of holes.

Oversaturation is one thing... but there is really little meaningful innovation. It boils down to SC II, Command and Conquer, Supreme Commander/Total Annihilation copycats, with occasional Company of Heroes or Age of Empires thrown here and there. And no... Adding "deck building" or "super power to shift the balance" is no innovation, it is a single mechanic more fitting a single game mode - a gimmick. My guess is... most of those will fade into obscurity so fast we won't even notice many of their releases.

I got into Creeper World some years ago, it's a great singleplayer title that ends up being an unusual mix of RTS and tower defense, and while it's often played like a turtle there's ways to speed through missions as well. Creeper World 3 is probably the best entry points in the series, or Particle Fleet: Emergence as a spaceship spin-off. A great comfy turtling series. Somehow it's had more entries than most RTS franchises ever manage and got its start long ago as Flash games. One of the notable features of the series is the built-in map creation, sharing, and browsing tools with pretty powerful scripting. It's allowed for a wide variety of community maps that even introduce their own game modes. There's even a level generator for endless play, though it doesn't compare to the campaigns.

The custom maps people have made really keep me coming back to this series. As well as the normal tower defence maps there's puzzle games, maps where you play as the Creeper itself and paint the map, and in Creeper World 4 there's First Person Shooter maps because it finally went 3D. Definitely recommend giving the series a look if you haven't tried any of them before.

12:30 Eyes of War misses the best example of that genre, I feel. Sure you got Natural Selection/ Sillica/Tremulus/Savage, but for the more singleplayer skirmish and that historic setting I cannot recommend 'Rise & Fall: Civilisations at War' enough. It, too, had a 'control your hero' mode, and it had neat mechanics like transport ships not making your units disappear, but having them walk on top and fight during boarding actions

I was thinking of Rise and Fall as well. It was a cool idea, but unfortunately the game didn't have much of an impact at its time and is mostly forgotten today. I still have the demo CD, which was given away for free at an electronic store, lying somewhere next to my PC.

Rise & Fall was one of my first "memorable" videogames because it reinforced in me my love for videogames set in antiquity and also fueled in me an obession for naval combat in videogames :) and I also loved to mess around with the map editor, it was fun to build maps where the "outposts" (those towers that spawned uncontrollable guard units) were surrounded by houses, to simulate the conquest of actual cities.

It was one of those big boxes with some velcro sealing a fold out panel, when I tried to install it on Vista and it needed to install some windows library thing it bricked my PC once, though, no clue how well Windows 10 or 11 will handle it

What I don't like about Dino Lords is, that it won't be a classical RTS, but you play your lord and command your troops like in the Overlord games. About Age or Respair... They are using many many many assets of existing Stronghold games, like the quarry, grannary, church and especially the mill etc.

Empire Eternal looks like they took the classic first Empire Earth and made it modern. As one of the first ever RTS I've ever played (alongside Command and Conquer) I kinda hope they keep or improve on the Empire Earth 1 mechanics and keep the ridiculous amount of epochs it had.

I would definitely include Sea Power, a game that recently entered early access. It's a super realistic tactical naval simulator set in the cold war. Sure, you "only" control a carrier group, but once a big NATO carrier deploys all its full complement of aircraft, there is more than enough going on. While the game is definitely early in its early access phase, battles get very tense.

Beyond all Reason is game i have been playing recently. It's vast and what keeps me hooked is satisfying combat where every projectile is simulated and relcaim fields (dead units) are big objective in game where you are forced to get control over it, it rewards calculated agression. Also scale of maps and sheer amount of units, it's possible to have 2000 units on field and still very playable at least for me.

The problem with the new homeworld games that look great is customization, I mean, we don't have time for this in an RTS, I barely have time to play and don't want to spend hours is customization, I want to have cool units creates by devs like any other RTS.

Zerospace is interesting in particular because the developers/producers are big starcraft and Warcraft players, so they're trying to make the ideal game they'd want to play. We'll see how it shakes out, but it's an interesting angle.

regarding Industrial Annihilation - if like me the idea intrigues you but you're not sure about how the two genres mix, I found Annihilate The Spance to be scratching that itch - you build your base, while your units fight it out, which is I feel a better implementation than trying to be both

I hope some of these games have good single player/co op campaigns. I know many people like multiplayer but a good campaign is ESSENTIAL to a good RTS imo. Most recent RTS i played was Terminator Dark fate and its campaign was hella fun .

I hope they would take a risk by making Age of Empires 5 set in the 1870s - 1970s era with the subtitle End of Empires, fulfilling the one concept art they had when the original 3 was in development. This era would demand a different gameplay from 2, 3, and 4, so it wouldn't necessarily compete with themselves.

i really wanted the planetary annihilation series to exceed my expectations it had a death star that you could use, you could smash planets into each other but they've released the same game three times now and they have added basically nothing. in fact the new addition seems to be how can we drag gameplay down into repetitive conveyor belt lines thats not gonna get annoying to replace broken lines, i thought that they'd expand the terrain ideas maybe have destruct-able terrain or manipulable environments maybe organic life form enemies so you can use chemical weapons, there is orbit for orbital units but they're not special in anyway they just blow up they don't shoot shrapnel out like a real satellite would debris doesn't linger in orbit i want my units to impact the environment i don't want to play a watered down supreme commander without having cool mechanics that affect how i play it and how it affects the planet im on why have a planetary system if you're not gonna utilise cool planet related weapons like atmosphere destruction or interplanetary artillery or antimatter weapons its just robot vs robot that they had since the first one there are so many possibilities but they made 1 game which while complete in its mechanics lacking very lacking considering the potential that it had, i bought the first game in early access the first one, not titans which i had to pay for separately and at the same price and i am utterly disappointment that i payed for it they've removed the first one from steam because they knew that it was a scam to charge full price for what should've been a dlc. is a "complete" rts but from my full experience with the franchise id give it a 4/10 for lack of care about their customers and their game. game hasn't changed since 2017 they added some more units in titans but they do the exact same things as other units

BAR is the REAL true successor to Total Annihilation. Other replacements like Sanctuary and even Industrial Annihilation will fail because of the fact BAR is free and very polished. Also it is already optimized to play good with modern hardware and the graphics are good.

The RTS genre was my favourite for years, but I began to get very weary of the fact that they became “produce X number of units to overcome Y number of units”….and that removed having any sense of skill or strategy, it all came down to how much you could overcome the enemy by attrition. I drifted away from the genre as I found it really boring and uninspiring….they ALL used this technique, it was just a case of whether the veneer was sci-fi, fantasy or contemporary. But then along came Company of Heroes (and it’s superb Blitzkreig mod). This was all about using a select amount of units and their respective abilities to win battles. Gone was the necessity to “just have more” of a given set of units, now it was about using the ones you have effectively. Suddenly RTS units went from cannon fodder to units I actually CARED about. If they cried out in battle that they were under attack, I’d want to go to where they were on the map and do my very best to help / save them. It’s so much more rewarding an experience to go into battle using units whose lives you care about rather than just “10 of those and 15 of those”. Victories became so much sweeter and rewarding. No other game (including, unfortunately, the sequels 2 and 3 of CoH) has managed to replicate this (and no, I don’t believe the Men at War series is comparable….even though I really want it to be). I’m very surprised that other developers haven’t looked at this approach and applied it more. All the games I saw in this video were just carbon copies of the boring “more is better” approach. I don’t want the outcomes of my games to be determined by how much I could overpower the enemy by spamming, I want my victories to come from genuine skill and tactics and a desire to see as many of my units survive as possible.

I played CoH but after a while I got bored and realized I didn't like how in RTS two units can shoot each other point blank and miss, and can't take ammo or modify vehicles by replacing the old machine gun to M2 Browning. So I return back to Men of War.
