Spoiler One more thing awesome about True Zonda's fight. If you play it on the 3DS version as GV, she will pull out an exclusive special attack called "Paradise Lost" where she keeps singing and sapping out your energy and eventually your HP non-stop. So your only way to cancel out that attack is for the player to SING REINCARNATION INTO THE MIC! That's right, you cancel a special attack with the power of karaoke. This part absolutely threw me off the first time I played it.

Ever since I beat gunvolt 2 for the first time and beat that true final boss as both characters I knew it was one of my favorite games ever. And now it is my favorite. The poety between the azure dragon and white tiger is beautiful and seeing copens emotions was really just perfect. His lines such as: "youll be dead before God can hear your prayer!" And "You may be right, but I dont care anymore!". Just...wow. AND THEN PHASE 2?! INDIGO DESTINY DUET?! MYTYL?! JUST...WOW. And of course....what happens after the boss still hits hard to this day after beating all the games so many times.

I've been putting this video on the backburner until the day I'd finally played through all the Gunvolt games for myself, and I'm happy to say, both the games and this fantastic ranking video was worth the wait! ^_^ Some scattered thoughts: --- - After thoroughly enjoying IX2, I was glad to see so much appreciation for it in this ranking! The more deliberate, melee focused combat wasn't what I was expecting from a Copen sequel... but it was surprisingly fun! It reminded me a lot of the Zero games, actually, especially with the boss design. - Still on the note of IX2, I really enjoyed getting all the achievements for it... but I only got through hard mode with assist mode, and haven't as of yet bought/tackled the DLC bosses. I only beat IX2 for the first time last week, but seeing your praising both the DLC and the hard mode bosses makes me wanna go back to the game and challenge myself to try hard mode again without healing! - GV3 is probably my favorite in the series from a presentation standpoint, and I enjoy Kirin + GV's/Zed's gameplay a lot.... but as of now, I think GV2 is still my favorite! I love the short but sweet length of both GV and Copen's campaigns. The stage design is marvelous. I love being able to switch between the playable characters from the start. And the bosses, as you highlight here, are great! It's the game that begun my Gunvolt hyperfixation these last few months, and it has a special place in my heart because of that. :) --- Thanks so much Zaffre both for making this fantastic deep dive into this fantastic series and for getting me into this series in the first place! I'm looking forward to many future replays of the GV games, and whatever new entries Inti has in store for us going forward!

Holy crap, this list was monstrously awesome. Seeing a countdown of top favorite Gunvolt bosses was what I wanted to see on KZbin, from anyone in general, ever since I finshed the series last year, so this was a blessing from the heavens for me to see. Since you asked for any favorite bosses from your viewers, I'll throw in my favorites. Here's a twist to a typical list though, I'm gonna list my favorites of the main bosses (that you can pick from the stage select screen a la Mega Man), with 1 being my favorite, and all other numbers going down. I'll list any other boss I like in an "Others" section to give them a fair chance as well. And this will be per game in chronological order of game release. So, this will be big. That being said, here we go. Gunvolt 1: 1) Elise 2) Merak 3) Jota HM1- Viper HM2- Stratos Gunvolt 2: 1) Tenjian 2) Ghauri 3) Asroc 4) Gibril HM1- Teseo Luminous Avenger iX1: 1) Crimm 2) Stella 3) Isola 4) Rebellio HM1- Dystnine Luminous Avenger iX2: 1) Hail 2) Ace 3) Dacite 4) Autochrome Gunvolt 3: 1) Prado 2) Shiron 3) Serpentine 4) Black Badge "BB" 5) Sistina HM1- Apollo HM2- Cayman Others: GV1- Nova (Phase 1), Copen GV2- Zonda LAiX1- Blade, Giant Lola, Butterfly Effect LAiX2- Ypsilon, Mother Computer, Veschrome (Vespa & Autochrome double battle) GV3- Zed, all the double battles (Jota & Viper, Zonda & Tenjian, and Merak & Teseo), Nova (alternate universe)

I appreciate hearing other people recognize how excellent iX2's boss fights were in spite of all of its various failings in other aspects. Going through Hard Mode really made me recognize how tightly designed each encounter is. Even Ace, who initially gave me hell on Hard because of his overwhelming speed, were a joy to learn once I started to pick up on how they compensated for his speed by making him use most of his attacks in a rigid pattern. It's still quite tough to get down due to the unrelenting pace of the fight, of course, but it shows that Inti had enough forethought to know that they could have created a monster if they carelessly jacked up the speed of a boss that's already based around speed without taking precautions that serve to make the fight more digestible even at that higher speed setting.

I'm kinda sad only one iX1 boss clicked well enough for you to make the list, but I get why. As much as I love fighting the iX1 bosses in their EX forms, it's not really because of the fight itself but rather Copen's nigh-perfect aerial mobility in iX1 and the visual aspects of the bosses. I stopped the video right before #17 and bought the Striker Pack just to give myself a better idea of what you’re talking about here. So you got another Gunvolt sale out of me 👍 I’m not a big fan of this style of game, like MegaMan X (though I have actually beaten X1 on my SNES). For side-scrollers, I prefer Metroid instead of linear, fast-paced running and gunning, master-the-stage-and-boss style stuff. That said, I got “all” the way to the first encounter with Copen in GV1 and had a pretty good time. I kept going back to the intro stage a lot to try to get really good at it (my personal attempt to be “really good”, anyway), and also ran Subaquatic Base, which was fun but kinda frustrating, Datastore, which was again fun but kinda frustrating, and Media Tower, which was probably my favorite stage so far and was just an actual good time. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the game, and maybe even the rest of the series. I’ve seen your other Gunvolt videos before and I wanna go back and watch them again. Thank you for this video! I've only gotten the true ending in the original gunvolt, and one of the endings in 2 on the 3DS, and going through the Striker pack now. Thing is, I am having trouble finding what you mean by Hard mode and, specifically, EX versions of bosses. How do these unlock? Is it the term for score attack stages?
@ZaffreRevolution Жыл бұрын
thank you for watching! in gunvolt 2, there are extra stages in the runner mode score attack section that feature harder variations of the first game's bosses, and a harder version of the final bosses from gunvolt 2. then gunvolt 3 and ix 2 have unlockable hard modes that have ex versions of all the game's bosses, and ix 1 has you fight harder versions of the bosses in post game extra stages. only gunvolt 2's bosses don't all have ex variations. hope this helps!
@windup13ird60 Жыл бұрын
@ZaffreRevolution Yes! I just need to play and unlock them, it seems. This is really exciting to me because I've loved the vibe and aesthetic of Gunvolt for forever, and played a lot, but my biggest issue has always been, that while bosses are dynamic and have hard moves to dodge, you're only punished from a scoring perspective because it's almost impossible to take damage in the normal modes. I'm hoping the harder modes make just surviving more of a battle, and from your videos it seems to be the case!
@ZaffreRevolution Жыл бұрын
@@windup13ird60 yeah and one other thing i would recommend would be to turn off prevasion, because this mechanic, as you've pointed out, makes it next to impossible to take damage. in gunvolt 1 and 2, it's linked to equipment, so look for the ones that highlight whether they have prevasion or not and steer clear from them - you'll know it's on if you have after images while moving. in ix1 and ix2, turning them off is as simple as a switch in the pause menu, and in gunvolt 3 it isn't on by default so it's best to leave it off anyway haha.

I find it funny that many call the Azure Striker saga "Easy" just because of the "Prevasion" Skill, but when I look at their Gameplays, *EVERYONE* abuses the "Prevasion" Skill and only dedicates themselves to recharging the skill instead of learn how to evade. The "Prevasion" skill is the "Easy" mode without damaging the ego of those who are from the "Crystal Generation" For me, Azure Striker has one of the best Scalable Difficulty designs. Its difficulty doesn't increase by placing a ton of Enemies on the screen or having them all become damage sponges. Hey man, nice video. You did a fantastic job going over the various bosses and what made them each good enough to make their spot on this list. I wanted to make a comment I've been thinking about for a while. You have a tendency to trash the story of asg throughout these videos. While I fully admit that the story isn't on the level of say, the last of us, or undertale, games that practically revolutionized how story was done in video games, and laix and laix2 are DEFINITELY the weakest when it comes to the story, I feel you're kinda sandbagging the storyline a bit. From the beginning, this series biggest strengths and draw ins for newcomers were in the characters and the gameplay, not the story. Most of the focus was on making the characters as lovable as possible and to make the gameplay unique and work for the "style" that the developers wanted, so naturally the actual storyline may feel to be a bit bland in comparison. Especially when this was a completely original ip made by inti creates to give them a sense of identity and individually as up to this point they had mostly worked with other companies and their characters who they ultimately didn't own, and thus needed to make their own trademark character that could stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of mega man, especially after the failure of mighty number 9. I recommend watching novazone's retrospective on the series as he does a good job of showing how deep the stories in this series can be as he brings up ALL of the asg content, including the info in audio dramas and whatnot. Sure, watching the two videos will take about 4 hours, but he does an awesome job in collecting all the lore in the series and contextuallizes them.
@ZaffreRevolution Жыл бұрын
i'm not really "trashing" the story, it's just not my thing. i'm not comparing these stories to anything, i tend to judge content on its own merits rather than how it stacks up to others that have nothing to do with it such as the last of us or undertale. i just find them to be weak even on their own and that's just my opinion. even with the stories i myself enjoy, the common problem is that they all rely way too much on external material. i'm constantly told how much depth these bosses really have, but all i get is a line or two in-game. fleshing them out in content outside of the game presented shouldn't make them immune to criticism, if there was really all of this depth intended to be there, it should've been in the game, not in some audio drama that isn't even officially translated. that aside, i just don't really find the stories structurally sound. there's not a lot of build-up to anything going on outside of the first two games. gunvolt 3 is the most "and then this happened!" story of them all, so while i enjoy the characters, i don't understand how i could possibly be expected to be invested in a story where anything happens without rhyme or reason, only to be told "oh actually it's all explained in this japanese audio track you can read a translation of online". even with laix 1, a game that supposedly has one of the best story stretches in the series, it's literally at the end of the game. i need time for these things to be fleshed out within the game itself or i'm just not gonna care. i can't just be presented an idea, the game do nothing with it, and then fall in love with it or even like it. i hope this doesn't come across as rude, by the way. i'm not trying to take anything away from those of you who do enjoy the story, and i always preface my thoughts with how i prefer gameplay over story. i also don't think i'm dunking on the narrative too much, especially in this video that's more gameplay-centric anyway. i'm happy for you all that there's someone who talks more about the aspects you all care about more but i want to focus on what i care more about so that's what i'm gonna do. i really appreciate you watching and hope you understand where i'm coming from, and i hope you're not confusing me defending my stance on the story with "sandbagging" it. i know why people like it, that just doesn't change my stance on it at all
