To my knowledge the first jolt is 20 seconds followed by a 15 second pause followed by another 20 second jolt. Then they have to let the corpse cool for a couple minutes. I don't think the actual event lasts more than a minute. But don't quote me.

I can't even imagine the smell of burning flesh. Alabama retired the electric chair. they replaced it with lethal injection and a brand new Gas Chamber. eight prisoners has recently opted for the gas chamber over injection.

The electric chair is still an option in Alabama for any condemned inmate who specifically selects it within a set time limit after initially arriving on death row. Alabama does not have a gas chamber. They have legislated nitrogen hypoxia as a third option of execution but they are yet undecided on how this is going to be delivered to an inmate. No protocol yet exists in Alabama.
