The Zagreb is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful and practical sets out there. This is a lovely combo 👌

I love my Zagreb 59 chess set from Chessbazaar. I love how the Zagreb fits your fingers perfectly. It is one of my favorite designs. Now I have a Lewis chess set being shipped from Austria. And a Lasker chess set circa 1880's, 1890's in ebony and boxwood coming from Chessbazaar. I just can not stop buying more chess set. Keep the chess sets coming. I always look forward to your reviews.

Thanks a lot for the support! I think the Lasker set is pretty remarkable, especially I like the bishop. Are the Lasker pieces less stable than the regular Staunton shape?

The Lasker chess set just arrived today about an hour ago from India. And I have not had a chance to open the chess set yet. But very soon, as I am watching the chess tournament from St. Louis on You Tube. @@RandomChessTalk

Everything looks really beautiful. I like the opposite color finials on top of the pieces.

I do not think Bobby Fischer had anything to do with Dubrovnik. Bobby won the great tournament in Zagreb, 1970. Actually, half the games were played in the resort town of Rovinij and the rest in Zagreb. I have the tournament book! I cannot prove this, but I think Bobby was allowed to take a set home afterwards; there is a photo of Bobby at home with books and this set, not the other one. The book, 1970. The other photo, 972...

Did you have the world chess championship chess pieces from royal chess mall (but RCM is selling it offline only)?

Thanks for the inquiry. I haven't purchased that set yet, I am not crazy about that knight, but the rest of the pieces are really beautiful.

I like the design of the Zagreb set. However it was falsely advertised as the set used in the 1959 Zagreb tournament when it was originally introduced to the market. Actually the set has absolutely nothing to do with Zagreb nor Yugoslavia. It was a creation of Frank Camaratta. That's the one thing I hate about this set. It was a historical marketing lie.

Wow this information is new to me. Do you know what pieces were used in the 1959 Zagreb tournament? And if Mr Frank created these pieces, did he give them the name Zagreb or somewhat different?

@@RandomChessTalk I was surprised by this too. I checked some pictures from the Zagreb 1959 tournament and they seem to be using a version of the Dubrovnik set. Very interesting news!

I have a Zagreb set from HoS like 2001 back when it was their budget set (also back then those sets didn't have an extra queen that HoS popularized, and I'm not sure the king finials were removable, mine has the cross for "western praxis" IIRC Frank's marketing literature at the time). Back then (and up to as recently as 2020) a lot of HoS sets that didn't have any real provenance were given names and fake stories by Frank based on tournaments: Zagreb, Hastings, Cambridge Springs, etc. That's how HoS worked. I think the "Zagreb" design became a thing because the simplified eastern bloc design made it much cheaper than the more classic Jacques style, plus it, like Dubrovnik which has a similar lineage, make great blitz sets. The combination of good value and sturdiness made the HoS Zagreb so popular that others made copies and the Zagreb name stuck. But, if you look at photos of the tournament, they clearly used a Dubrovnik design. This design (without a cross finial) was still a popular style of Dubrovnik inspired sets common in those countries around the 1960's (obviously likely with some changes that Frank Camaratta specified that others copied). I love the design and everyone now knows it as "Zagreb '59" even if there is variation (your knights are thicker that mine for instance).
