I agree, I love Mr. Dangle here. Don, though, is a Canadian cultural symbol whether people want to admit it or not. Healthcare, Hockey, excessive politeness, and Tim Horton's are (In that order) synonymous with Canada and Don is synonymous with Hockey. Since 1981 him and Ron (as of '86) have been on air for, maybe, the most important time slot of the week for young Canadians. What matters most about Don is that, alleged xenophobia aside, he has represented Canadian patriotism in a way that is desperately needed. He never fails to take time out of his shrinking segment to honor each fallen troop. He honors individuals and humanizes people who would otherwise be just another tragic headline to most. He emphasizes pride in how you dress, which is a matter of self respect. He uses the all to rare phrase "The Canadian way" to evaluate matters of morals and self conduct. Even if I don't agree with all of his positions he's an anchor of Canadian cultural identity in an over saturation of american media. Admittedly some of his opinions on hockey have become outdated. His true value is, and always has been, that he knows people and cares about people which makes him so distinct from any other sports segment. In that right he will never be outdated.

I think that the Leafs suffered from the compressed schedule. But not because of the games and being tired, but because the coach didn't get the time he needed with a young team. You can only do so much with video, and the breaks in between games and road trips seemed to me that they got morning skates and video sessions, and not a lot of actual practice time. So, combine a regular season with the addition of a year of experience and throw in more time to teach and learn on the ice, the Leafs have a great chance to improve over this past season.

Two way deals affect salary, not cap hit. $900K of the cap hit (max) gets buried when a player is sent to the AHL. That applies to one way and two ways deals. Waiver eligibility is also not affected by contract status. One way and two way deal players need to be waived if they are waiver eligible players.

@JewUnit67 жыл бұрын
he didnt explain well. leivo over martin although they can protect both cuz of the ben smith signing. Imo we would want martin instead of leipsic. leipsic is wayy easier to replace then martin. you may think leipsic a bit better in general then martin but no way we replace that style of play as easily as a guy like leipsic

This better not turn into a Phaneuf situation with the contract
@JewUnit67 жыл бұрын
man do any of you have a grasp on numbers? the salary cap has gone up like five times since that, and phaneaf was making 6-7 mill instead of 4.5. Everybody needs to realize that their reference point must change each year with the increased cap. 5 mill is the old 3 mill, crosby has always got top dollar, he used to have a contract worth about 5 mill and that was high back then, guys like that are worth 8-10 mill these days.
@JewUnit67 жыл бұрын
not to mention we were in cap trouble when they signed phaneaf, we have about 25 mill next season

@andrewzolondek49737 жыл бұрын
that's a little too much for zaitsev, if your a -21 on a playoff team that has a top 5 power play and penalty kill you probably aren't a good defensive player. also when you watch him play he can look lost out there at times.
@Flaris7 жыл бұрын
Well if you were watching him when he was coming back from a concussion....that might explain him looking lost. In the end that's how much they had to pay. Zaitsev had all the cards. Could go back to Russia, or sign for a year or so and then he's a UFA, and he knows the Leafs have no one on the blueline. He was a good top 4 D on a rookie year after spending a fair amount of time in the KHL. That's market value.
@JewUnit67 жыл бұрын
cherry wrong on this one, the guy didnt play the top pp so throw that one out, i dont think he was on the pk either. First year on north american ice and had to play the best players in the league all year. Also his strength is being a puck moving d, which helped us alot. Look at montreal without a puck mover that was their flaw in the playoffs this year. Woulda been nice to have pk still

@jessicaburbankhater7 жыл бұрын
RandalPlays I meant in terms of how similar their situations are. Stars get Seguin and lose Erikson in the trade. Leafs acquire Matthews after trading Kessel a year prior. Both teams had good wingers in JVR and Benn (though Benn is on another level). Year 1 of the new era both teams snuck into the 1st round and lost in 6 games. I could see the Leafs coming back to earth in year 2 like the Stars before they become good.

@JewUnit67 жыл бұрын
they performed pretty good for what we got but ya they are pretty bad in general. I completely agree that the weight of leaf nation not being on the teams shoulders this year allowed them to keep pushing. Once the expectations are raised again im not sure how they will handle bad games. Leafs nation needs to take a step back and be prepared for five years of pain.

@JewUnit67 жыл бұрын
we have 25 mill next year and about 10-15 tied up in players that will be gone in 2-3, cap space is not an issue and a 4.5 contract in 2017 is about the same as a 2.5 in 2007, you must update your reference point. 4.5 is not that bad in 2017, especially since you know its higher then it should be due to the russia factor, which has got to be worth a mill, so in essence he was signed for 3.5 a year with an extra mill to keep him in north america. Any russian players have this leverage now that the K is willing to pay top money for talent.
