Thank you for this! I am really glad you used this angle too it can help me later!!! My father was teaching me some of this to me as I was on my way out from my parents home today! My father is from Glasgow. He turned 75 today!! He's kept up with his dance over my lifetime. He danced as a child. After moving to Canada he joined the RSCDS likely to have a bit of home around. My grandmother had also danced. I had recently joined him in this our classes are on pause for now. It's always fun, It's a great work out & for myself, it's a great way to spend time with him as I no longer live home. I also get that added bonus of keeping that side of my family's culture alive. [Fun fact] After living in Scotland as a child for a couple of months, and after seeing the weather everything clicked. The child me thought: "This is the same weather as home it feels like home" I understood how he ended up living the rest of his life here, our weather is/was identical.

Unfortunately other people have the same idea! From what i've seen, local people (aka - the actual lifeblood of the highlands culture) can't afford to live there anymore, and the most popular destinations are full of air bnbs, by the time you get there the culture will have been pushed out, i'd recommend a visit first and perhaps living in one of the cities instead - Glasgow is a great gateway to visit many places. ^^' I see so many whimsical comments about Scotland, but it's nothing like people seem to imagine - not to say Scotland isn't worth a visit, just that people should temper their expectations or risk disappointment.
@teelesynclair59022 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend living in the Highlands, it would be costly. Like the other comment, I'd recommend living in one of the bigger cities like Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee or Aberdeen, its not a big country so you could easily hop a train up to the Highlands and stay a few days. I'm just saying that because I know job opportunities ect are scant in the Highlands whereas you will fare better in a big city, life i just easier in the city like you have more resources available, like shops, libraries, swimming pools, sports centres, restaurants, bars and like cinemas ect. The Highlands are beautiful but you honestly don't have to go that far from the city to see and appreciate the beauty of Scotland. I'd honestly recommend Glasgow, it's full of gorgeous parks plus you'll find lots to do. I'm from Glasgow, I've lived here all my life

For anyone who is an expert on the Bagpipes... please explain what are "Strathspeys"... "Tullocks"... "Reels"... "Pibrochs"... ect... and how they are similar, different or how they otherwise compare with each other. Thanks!!
@lizjohnston25502 жыл бұрын
A Starthspey is a tune with a distinct rhythm is is written in 4/4 time. I don’t know what a Tulloch is but a reel is a tune played very fast with a more even rhythm and is also 4/4 time. A pibroch is a pipe tune with amazing history. It’s a form of music for the bagpipes involving elaborate variations on a theme, typically played in times of war or at funerals which feels rather hypnotic when heard played properly.
