Enacting laws that are related to cybercrime and cyber security is not new neither should it be viewed negatively. The global trend indicates that many nations use cybercrime laws to regulate the cyber environment. However, if the sole purpose of enacting such laws is for curbing the freedom of speech, then that is a whole different ball game. Freedom of speech is a vital component to any democratic set up. If freedom of speech is used within the confines of the law, ordinary people who are not necessarily politicians may also contribute to the checks and balances thereby increase participation in the governance of the country. Without fear of prosecution or persecution, citizens should be free to point the wrongs or potential wrongs. Cyber laws give police extensive powers. This tends to give room for abuse by some over zealous government officials whose only aim is to please their superiors and careless about the people.
