I used to have a Uni friend who lived in Kenny Hills. When I visited her house during the 1980s, was surprised to find out how big her house was. Even more surprised to find out that her aunt who lived nearby, had a bigger house with a swimming pool too :) I didn't even knew she was old money as I thought she was from a normal middle class family. Very low key and unpretentious. Turned out that her father was one of the first Malay bankers in Malaysia and her mother was one of the first female Malay doctors in Malaysia. In the early 1990s, as she was working in London, her parents bought her an apartment in Central London. Later, in order to facilitate their trips to London, they bought another apartment in the same complex. I liked the old money people as they tended not to show off and blended in. Unlike the new rich who seems to live in designer items and surrounded by hangerons and bodyguards.

FYI, Damansara Heights is where retired civil servants in the 50's-60's live with their descendants. Houses used to be a lot more affordable there, hence you'd see that most of these houses are renovated, but these were way outside the normal living standard in Malaysia (how a group of civil servants get that type of money, I'll leave it to your imagination ;)). This is the best thing where you find 'old' money types except for royalty. Newer money live in the further outskirts of Shah Alam, Putrajaya, and Bangi.

Top tier civil servants (JUSA A, B, C) make up to RM20k a month and receive the same pension as their last drawn salary (100%) I.e. even up to RM16k a month, so no need to insinuate anything indecent here, at least not for all of them

@@Lekirius 15k monthly payment? Well I'm sure you know it wouldn't have been RM3mil when they bought it. You yourself said it used to be a lot more affordable in the past. These houses would go for less than RM500k just 20-30 years ago. Unless you meant "in *their* 50s-60s" and not "in the 50s-60s" (I.e. the years of 1950s and 1960s). And many people reach JUSA around 10-15 years before retirement. Also, if they bought it while working in civil service, they also get more favourable loan terms. Meanwhile, many retirees continue working in the private sector after retiring from civil service, mostly as consultants where they make serious money as well. Anyway I was just amused that you think there's no way any govt servant can make enough money to buy a nice house in a nice neighbourhood. Sure, we know there are those who are less scrupulous, but many are honest and are just good at managing their finances.

In the 70s, Damansara Height and later TTDI DS houses were sold at around RM 50k per unit, well within the reach of civil servant income, what more if both husband and wife are working which was the trend back then. The salary of average gradute civil servants in their 40s at that time was around RM 2k - 3k per month. So, towards the end of 70s many of them financially caple to acquire second houses elsewhere including bungalow units which were sold at around RM 120k in such places as Cheras. So those civil servants as they reached retirement at the age of 55, (around the early years of 2000s) the price of their houses already quadupled and together with their savings, service gratuity and golden hanshake money, they could easily upgrade to bigger house. They dont have to resort to malpractice whatsoever to achieve that. For graduate civil servant who opted for EPF, their accrued EPF saving was around RM 1M by the time they retired in early 2000s, which was a handsome amount at that time and still is I suppose. To get a clearer picture: In 1977 the year I entered the service, graduate starting salary ++ RM 1100; 3 b/r SS house in KL RM 35k; Toyota Corolla KE 30 or Datsun 120Y around RM 13k. Satu pinggan nasi campur lauk ikan masih boleh dapat rega RM 0.80, lauk ayam RM 1.00. PLUS highway pun baru buka sampai Seremban, Karak highway mula boleh guna setahun lepas tu.

You are ignorant. Back then the money was significantly 'bigger then today' those who stayed at D Heights are not a 'normal' civil servant. Not the common lower grade servant. Mind you those are with federal titles and not 'acquired' like some Chinese business man. Today D heights lived by those of 3rd generation or new house owner. Proton is a Malaysian brand car and built in Malaysia not China but is not yet an EV. But the company is now partly owned by Greeley of China. But most of the parts are Malaysian but still some parts from Japanese or Chinese.

Proton was started in the 1980s and is based on Mitsubishi (Japanese) technology. There was a deal between Mahathir/Malaysia and Japan to make Malaysia an asian automaker superpower. Mitsubishi sold old technology to Proton, which is how they started. The cars were priced for the local market, and were basically tin cans - very unsafe. However, it got people off motorbikes as the middle classes rose. Whether Geely is owner now is neither here nor there. Land Rover is owned by an Indian firm, but people don't call it an 'Indian' car. Proton owned the UK's Lotus for a while, but Lotus was not called a 'Malaysia' car. Similarly, Geely bought Volvo, but that is not known as a 'Chinese' car. If any of these premium marques were to be relabelled as Indian/Malaysian/Chinese, they would lose all their customers lol. China is great for making cheap EVs (with designs and technology mostly copied from western brands) that catch fire and are generally not safe on the road. It's not going to break that image of IP theft and cheap/tacky/low quality manufacturing any time soon.

One tip for American and British people in Malaysia, most restaurants follow the British doneness so if you're American always go one below like ask for medium rare if you want medium cooked. American restaurants do use American ways both in dining and bar drinks which again is different with the continental way.

Hey Zane ✌🏼 For your info, the Food Trucks were there cause it's a Friday and they are parked across from the mosque for the patrons of the mosque pre and post Friday Prayer at noon. You won't find most of the trucks there on any other day or time. The trucks offer quick or ready-to-go meals for patrons that are rushed for time. Also, good pick with Shawn Cutler, where I get my hair styled 😁 good service and great hair stylists. For us loyal customers, we have a stylist that we make an appointment with and they know what to do everytime we come in. Also, Damansara Heights is a mature neighborhood, it's been around for a while. With mature neighborhoods, the houses have been renovated / personalized to the owners liking. Newer neighborhoods, though nice are pretty cookie cutter oriented. They are modern but all look pretty much the same and now mostly gated. Mt Kiara is a newer neighborhood and almost exclusively filled with high-end condominiums and some villas.

If you want to see nice big bungalows, you can find it in Section 6 of Shah Alam, Selangor, less than 20km from KL. You can see 7 floor of bungalow, and i m sure you can't walk all the way because the bungalows continue to up hill.

Interesting and fun fact I don’t know that in Malaysia you can own land, I do know that in Thailand you can only own the property, condo or house. My friend in Chiang Mai Thailand he owns a home in a suburban neighborhood but had to have a local including his name on the deed. Luckily as a Fil-Am, I can have my family put my name on the land and be owner or property and land. Safe travels!!!

Working in service industry I would suggest tipping as servers only get around three percent out of the service charge as it covers a lot of costs including breakages and other departments in the business. Calculate the amount you're paying for the server and you'll see it's not worth the work to handle an hour of work for a few ringgit. Servers actually can survive because of tipping. I've trained thousands of servers in casual dining all over south east Asia.

Corruption? Probably no. But incompetence and fraud, these are obvious. Just read news about people's money missing from their accounts. Even the biggest bank in Malaysia does not bother to make sure records of customers' money are correct. I had thousands missing from its app. Despite repeated reminders, it still did not fix it. Fortunately I am mainly a computer user, so I could still see it elsewhere, and eventually transferred all of it out. Who knows one day the website will also become as broken as its app, then the money will be gone without any trace. This is a commercial company, probably the biggest bank in the country, and it is this bad. You can imagine how government organizations like EPF and inland revenue department are. Read their app reviews by users, and local forums about their performance.
