Dr. Alex Bennett began kendo because it looked as interesting as Star Wars. At TEDxMeieki, a wooden-sword in hand, he introduces us to the concept of Budo (Japanese martial arts) and the philosophy of Zanshin (a sense of lingering heart). Budo is different from sport. From his experience of more than 20 years, he speaks about the very essence of Budo.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

For the sake of the curious, I present my short summary. The man is here to praise the spirit of martial arts, specifically sword art. In the battlefield, unlike the game of sports, there is no joy of victory or despair or defeat but only the ever continuing way on which everyone respect for each other and always seek to learn and improve. Ironically in a friendly game of sports you have an enemy but in martial arts you only have partners. You don't enjoy killing your partner. This speaker is praising that stern teaching in his perfect Japanese.

I think Dr. Bennett does a great job discussing the elements of martial art (with kendo as an example) and imho, what makes it different from sport. He goes into depth of what zanshin means and it's not necessarily the point nor is it necessarily about the victory. It's maintaining a consistent and ready mindset and not relenting or diverging from that mindset. Elaborating further, he goes into some explanation about what the differences are. He uses celebrations as an example. Emotion is part of anything, but in kendo, it's frowned upon because it defeats the purpose of learning the art. In sport, it's different because the goal of any sport is to win. To win a championship or to defeat your opponent and really, nothing else. Once that is finished, you win! You are the best! You are relieved and you celebrate! In true martial arts, that element is taken out and what you are left with a mindset that is supposed to last you a lifetime. Something that effects your everyday life rather than giving you moment in time. Hopefully I got it, but that's how I understood his talk.
