Nice clean print. Thanks for uploading. I just edited two 400ft reels of both digests of Star Wars onto an 800ft reel in order. Took over an hour to do but it was worth the effort.

A slice of priceless nostalgia - thanks! I once had this same 8mm version; I think it tiredly succumbed to the force at some point. Fascinating to see how the colour slowly leaches away over time. My initial memory of first watching this after purchase, knowing it was only going to run for a brief eight minutes, was anxiety over the opening inclusion of Luke and Ben’s force dialogue - where’s ILM’s effing good stuff?! Then, the bridging cut from the cruiser approaching the Death Star to the entire Tie Fighter attack scene seemed supremely daft. Luke, thanks to the ding-dong editors at Ken Films, is somehow magically transported from the previous scene. Better instead to have included the complete and uninterrupted build-up to the Tie Fighter attack. Good old Ken!

I'm pretty sure this is the one I had, though the projector didn't have sound. For the audio, I recorded the relevant bits from the double LP The Story of Star Wars to a portable cassette player, and played it back that way. It was magical back then, and now when I watch it at home it has even more nostalgic importance, especially Obi Wans dialogue..

Most cheap colour film from the 1960s-80s turns red due to the colour pigments/die degrading. It’s just what happens. Thankfully most of these films can be saved if they are scanned in digitally so colour correction can be applied.

I gather this is the "color" version although it's pretty-damn monochrome now! I have some 70mm clips of the 1977 movies and the color is also quite faded (although not quite as bad as this). I also recently found some "type-C" Kodak color prints from the same era, which also have the "magenta shift" (although not as bad as the color print film). So many color processes have lasted long and better, it's a real shame Kodak ruined a decade of art with their badly-fading color print dyes. Also, this seems to be the least-concientious possible edit of the movie. More than half the time given-up to exposition (in a version most people will watch without sound!), and missing the climax of the movie, the jump to light speed, the light-sabre battle, etc.

the projector's built in speaker most likely
@kylewinward884711 ай бұрын
Yes. I also had this same question. I used to think there were two different versions with sound and some without, but I see that it's more likely that our projector didn't have a speaker.
@KingNP4111 ай бұрын
@@kylewinward8847 either the projector didn’t have a speaker as it was an 8mm projector or it was a super 8mm projector that either had a built in speaker or came with an external one… however, if it has the port to send the audio externally you can probably hook it up with the right cable to a generic modern day speaker with or without an adapter…
@kylewinward884711 ай бұрын
@@KingNP41 thank you and makes good sense. I recall that my dad's projector was a 8mm not a super 8mm, which as you wrote, explains the lack of audio. It was still a lot of fun. My dad showed it at my 7th birthday party in 1977. We would ask him to stop and reverse our favorites parts such as the doors closing in front of Vader. As I recall we could see the foil of his sword in that shot; the post-production light saber effect was missing.

I had the kenfilm same company same movie in color and sound was on a magnetic tape strip along the edge of the film . It was called super 8 and was a little different size than 8mm . shown here . A lot of Colour film fades to the red over time
@TheTerryGene2 ай бұрын
This is a problem that has existed since the 1950’s when Eastmancolor supplanted three strip TechniColor, which was less prone to fading. It is called Magenta Syndrome. All color film prints will fade over time unless properly restored. That is why film preservation is so important.

They did. Derann Films in Dudley, West Midlands, UK, (which sadly closed some time ago) had a full length edition of Star Wars in CinemaScope (full width, needs a special lens attachment) and stereo sound. Released in 1989. Back in the heyday of Super 8 prints, digests were the norm. Full length was rare and very expensive. Derann prints were mostly of fantastic quality, since they got their hands on high quality negatives - and they kept the price reasonable.
