She also pronounces words backwards instead of literally saying them in reverse. (so basically if you reverse her audio it would consist of mostly gibberish) Example: "No More Witches" would be, "On erom Sehctiw" (words are backward, sentence isn't so if the audio of this is reversed it would seem to be, "Witches More No" ) Now, it would seem like she was just saying 'witches more no' but because of how it would be pronounced the reversed audio would literally make no sense. Example: A word like say, 'Levitate' would be pronounced backwards as "E-TAT-TI-VEL" BUT if you record someone saying it and reversed the audio it would be something like, "TAAT-IV-EL" Because when we are pronouncing the word backwards we incorporate the 'e' at the front because of proper grammar but when we actually say the word we leave out the same 'e'. So when Zatanna is possessed with power she goes fully reversed. (as in this video) As in if you reverse the audio you hear her exact words and understand. So in essence it's pronouncing words backwards vs speaking audibly in reverse. Hope this makes some sense.

Zatanna isn’t what you would call “second-rate” by any stretch of the mind. Her and John are among the most powerful sorcerers on the planet, with John being able to perform cosmic trickery that alters luck and minor threads of reality on a whim, and Zatanna having been born into a family that has almost always practiced sorcery. While she isn’t on the level of Doctor Fate, The Stranger or The Spectre, she can match or even overpower beings like Faust or Wotan- immortal magicians who twist up the JL regularly. Problem is, she is bound by two factors- backwards spell-speaking and focus. If her focus is broken while casting, she runs the chance of losing the spell altogether, which is why she usually has a number of spells memorized to regurgitate. This was basically her letting loose, right after removing the totem spell that Faust used to silence her. Piss off Zatanna Zatara at your own peril.

Basically, she is expecting all of her fights to only be magical, and has no backup capability that is different from her primary power. Other examples would be: - Batman making sure to have a Feather Fall item handy (so the situation in Dark Heart would not have been as critical for him) - Superman having a radiation belt to protect himself from Kryptonite (BTAS: World's Finest) - Wonder Woman having some form of ranged combat - Martian Manhunter having a few Elide Fire Balls that he can toss at a fire and put it out - Hawkwoman having a ranged weapon - Green Lantern having basic body armor instead of relying on his ring all the time - Flash having some sort of non-speed capability so he can not worry as much about falling (I am Legion) - someone providing basic psionic protection so the group doesn't get puppeted (Eclipsed - Part 1, or Grudge Match)

Its because of the tragic event & experience that really split the both them. Also thought John is toxic & a trickster just to do what he wants due of self interest? Frederick Hicban In the comics, John was a stalker to Zatanna and a even worse bastard then he is in this movie. The movie shows off a more sympathetic version of him and leaves some of the bad shit he has done. Constantine knows that he’s not good for anyone to be around especially Zatanna. Everyone around him either dies or suffers a fate worse than death. It’s not entirely his fault for being connected to the synchronicity wave that gives him impeccable luck but leaves everyone else to suffer. John Constantine knows that he’s not a hero nor someone you should know. He’ll save your life sure, but it won’t be in the way you expect.

Speaking of anime, I'd love to see Zatanna in Fate/Stay Night (check it out if you haven't seen it: the prequel Fate Zero, then the original 2006 Fate/Stay Night, then Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works). I can see it now, her and Arturia as her Servant, not to mention Zatanna could potentially hold her own against a Servant, which is a big deal in the Fate universe because "Servants" are powerful and should not be fought without another Servant by your side.

Not really. Anyone can learn magic but Zatanna is Homo-Magi meaning she has a natural affinity for the mystic arts bc her bloodline comes from descendants of magical beings. Faust never had magic to begin with, he learned it and sold his soul to the devils I think in exchange for more power. That's why Zatanna is never seen using artifacts, spellbooks, or other magical items. Her magic comes from within. If you noticed Faust carried a spellbook around with him throughout the entire fight, that mixed with his dark magic is where his magic comes from.

Anyone in DC comics can learn magic. However, some people have a greater affinity or are magical/mystical by nature. Constantine is a human that has learned magic. That's why he often uses objects. This was portrayed in the movie and in comics.

Constantine doesn't need a god-mode, he's playing with cheats enabled. His innate luck power is basically deus ex machina for literally everything. He's always in the right spot, knows the right people, has the right item, and other assorted nonsense. Not even Fate itself can f with Constantine

John isn't about the immense cosmic power. He might not have the crazy potential at his fingertips, but that's because his power is more subtle. He knows where to find powerful magic artifacts and allies, he knows how to exploit weaknesses. John is basically magic Batman. Tough if you catch him unaware but unbeatable with enough prep time. The difference is that batman is all about certainty, not taking risks unless they're essential. John is a gambler. His risks just have a tendency to pan out more often than not because he's literally supernaturally lucky. Also John isn't big on flat out fighting in the best incarnations. He might square off if he has a massive upper hand, but he prefers tricks and deception if he can help it.

Having Zatanna being limited by her speech is one of the inaccuracies to the comics I can't forgive. Zatanna doesn't need to speak to cast spells, she uses that to focus, but she has absolutely shown to be able to cast powerful spells without speaking, it's actually ridiculous that many media try to turn that into a weakness.

IN the comics Constantine is basically a God. Hes outwitted both the Devil and God, knows all the pathways out of Hell etc. Basically he cant die and is kind of a walking God. Though IDK what abilities hes been allotted/what is cannon in the new 52 or dark in these past few years.

In the comics, he knows all the paths in and out of heaven/hell. He can enter and leave whenever he wants. True that he has outwitted the Devil and God. As far as abilities go, he knows a lot of spells and knows the lore, but hardly ever uses magic, preferring to use his wits and cunning. In a straight up magic battle, he'll lose as someone like zatanna or Felix Faust could easily overpower him. He usually wins because he cheats. He'll do anything to win, even leaving companions to die.

I think it's because Zatanna's main limitation with her magic is that she has to use verbal incantations (by saying stuff backwards) in order to cast spells. It's just how her character works, for the most part. I think there's also something about her being able to cast without speaking, but I'm going to assume that they wanted higher stakes for the fight.
