My favorite film in the series, for being my introduction to the character. And also because it includes the classic story beats for a Zatoichi film, while changing them up a bit. We get to see one of his dice tricks backfire. We get a great “frenemy” character, and a game of wits that plays out throughout the film. We get some amazing acting from Shintaro Katsu, at some of his most emotional in the series. It was a great way to get to know Zatoichi, as someone new to the series. On The Road is up there, as well. That was the first that I saw in a theater, with an audience who loved every minute. Nicely done.
