Really enjoyed this one. Makes you want to get up and dance for sure. Unfortunately being non-native am pretty much limited to open round dances. Am looking forward to the next pow wow.

How I wish we could have a pow wow at our huge Six Gun Territory Wild West Weekend in Williston, Florida, 9/12 and 13, 2015. Our Native American families from the old theme park are not available. Time is running out to have the important contribution of this super cool history there. Help, if you can, please.

Woah..the reaction to third place was harsh....and quite frankly, I thought she should have danced off with the winner....

I agree, she's a professional Dancer after all.

Wonderful dancing! Some of the ladies looked like they were dressed in some Asian looking clothing. Of course that's just me and I admit to knowing nothing about different tribes and traditional clothing.

Oh I just read another comment that said she got third because she was too flashy and now I can see that, given it's a traditional dance. There is also some question about her ethnicity. Apparently at one point she said she was Puerto Rican, Spanish and French and has no ties to any US tribe and is not enrolled. Now she is saying she's part Navajo and Choctaw. Many enrolled Natives aren't impressed with her. She used to elude the tribe question but I guess she had to make up something as I'm sure she gets grilled a lot. One thing I found out is she is a professional dancer from Chicago and is named Soleil Strickland. Some Natives call her an instant Indian.

PFCthomas Blackhawk Thanks. I'm well aware. There is also a band of Carib Amerindians in Dominica not to be confused with Dominican Republic who have a reserve. They are the only recognized Amerindians left in the Carribean. I have a Canadian friend who is Carrier and another who is Slavey. Natives are everywhere contrary to what people think.

I can't write a direct comment so I'm guna add my comment here. Ok first of all I'm guna say that each and every one of those finalist deserved a spot in the top five no matter the order, they all danced their butts off!! Second, since when do we boo??? And since when does boo'ing dteremine wether or not one is more deserving of a place than the others?? Let's show some class, respect and etiquette. Third I will say, smoke dance is faaarrr from "traditional"...let's cut the traditional bs and realize that were dancing our social dance in a powwow arena/circle.....a dance that derived from a war dance......a man's dance......which then developed into a social & competitive dance known as smoke dance. Movements & foot work is NOT mandatory nor is required for any such person to dance any certain way. Originality is important as with anything else, and along with everything else this dance has evolved. And last, soleil came to me directly....asked me about the dance ....asked if it would be disrespectful if she danced as well. It's our nature as people to not be stingy of our songs and dances that are acceptable of sharing. She is not the first nor the last non-Iroquois to participate and place in dancing smoke dance. Get over it. Tired of all the negativity and passing of judgement. If yous are God/Creator/Buddah any being of higher power then you have that will to judge but I believe none of us are so why worry about it. Enjoy the videos and move on. That is all.

DerzOnly1ME Thanks for the clarification. I totally rooted for her but then saw the comment about her being too flashy and added an additional comment. This was a nice little peek into the history of the smoke dance so again thanks.

Third place deserved third place because this was traditional Iroquois dancing and she was too flashy. The judging was right on. And I'm Iroquois and have judged these competitions before.

It must have sucked to be the top two girls. Everyone's booing because that third place girl didn't place higher. Their basically thinking you don't deserve your place. :(
