Zebco 55 FAIL -- Discovery Video -- Young Martin's Reels

This is a discovery video where I disassemble, clean, lubricate and reassemble a Zebco 55 spincast fishing reel. Since it is a discovery video, that means I didn't really know what I was doing.

Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.

I like this video just as well as the second one. I like when you show mistakes and discoveries while going through a reel. Video's like this sometimes helps "ring a bell" when I'm working on reels. Thank you for giving us a chance to see it!

Like I’ve said Tommy, I’m not here to hide my mistakes. I figure others can learn from them. I made the mostly mistake free version to show the correct way to do it. The discovery videos are usually pretty informative too. I enjoy them both ways.

I found one of these in an antique store about a year ago, same thing, totally locked up and had no idea what kind of condition it was truly in… and they wanted $45 for it.. just couldn’t take that kinda chance.. glad I got to see what one looks like.. thanks!! 😊

I can honestly say that I would never pay $45 for one that didn’t turn. I was at my limit at $10. However, I’ve been excited to get into it and see how it worked. I was worried about the click knob assembly being bad. I had talked to Jim Jones about it back when I first acquired it. Those little springs are pretty delicate and they seem to break off rather often.

@@youngmartinsreels5314 I remember even though it was locked, it felt sloppy, warn out maybe.. I guess it just seemed less the quality of what I thought a Zebco from that time should’ve been.. I definitely would’ve never paid a lot for it, but it’s not there anymore so I can only assume “someone” thought it was worth it..

@@raymyers6522 I have had 7 of these reels in my hands. 5 of them had broken anti reverse switches. Replacements aren’t impossible to find but they are very rare. Those are pretty hard to come by. I just gave away my repaired AR switch last week.

Sometimes you can use a Cresent wrench, just put it on the push button it usually turns

That's not the original handle, they come with a power handle, which is much bigger

@@raymyers6522 that is correct. When I received this reel, it had no handle. This one fit, even though it isn’t original to the reel.
