Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.

Doesn’t look like a very durable reel but I know little about spincasters. I’m not sure I could have gotten this reel open. I notice you have another bandaid. What did you do this time? Why didn’t you grease the main gear and pinion before installing? I guess it doesn’t matter. Glad to see you using SuperLube. I would have put a little lubrication next to the reel body when installing the handle. Good call on that drag washer. Some of these kids will end up coming to you at church asking you to put line on ihe reel and find them a rod. I know I would have. You did a great job on this ingenious little reel. I wonder what the preacher is going to say when he hears all those little clicks during his message. I personally think it will be most entertaining! - Chris

Chris, remember that these reels are normally used in fresh water to catch fish that usually weigh less than a pound. The drags seldom come into play but will work on a larger fish in the event you hook one. I crushed the nail on that finger about a month ago. Almost the whole nail is now loose but the key word is almost. I’m using bandaides to hold it down while it slowly grows back out. No need for grease under the handle since it doesn’t really ride against the body. The main gear riding against the pinion gear provides the spacing to keep the handle off the reel body. The first time I took one of these apart it took a while to figure out how open it up. I try not to use force when working on reels but sometimes its necessary. I’ve been trying to grease the gears lately after installation to cut down the grease I get on my hands. It works just as well and it’s a bit neater. As for the preacher, he loves to hear kid’s active in the church. It’s a sign of a health church and we went for so long with very few children in our church that we are happy to have them.
