this is super cool!!! i worked on chapter 3 as lead character artist while these guys were being made and worked a lot on the planning/rigging front, and it's so awesome to see a physical plush that hits all the notes of the 3D model! it's also a good lesson to me how certain elements of the plush are actually way harder to do than i would've previously thought (like the head shape or the arm articulation). i love how the seams of the fabric match the UV seams of the 3D model, and how the paint on the eyes and neck piece look very 1:1!

Thank you so much! I have seen your reel and it is really inspiring to see how things work behind the scenes. Haha yes, there are certainly areas that do not work in real life as they do in the digital space like the indented mouth and it was really fun to try figure out a way to get around those. One thing I didn't mention in the video was the foot, as you can see it's not round enough because it differs from how a plush would usually work, where it should be circular base so that it can hold the roundness. Other than that, I really owe it to the UV map as it is the basis for the pattern generation and all I had to do was to hand sew them together!

Came out so cool! Btw, if you have one armature link stuck in the foot/hand pieces, you can heat up a single free piece with a heatgun or hair dryer. This will make it soft. Then put the free piece facing up on a table, grab the hand piece, line the hole up, and smash down. It will usually pop in without any issues.

Referring to using clay forms to make your patterns first, made me laugh a little bit as a plush/fibre artist; that in and of itself is a game changer that's only been well known throughout the greater plush/fursuit community for a few years (5 years minimum I'd say; which seems like a lot, but nkt in the grand scheme of things). When I was first starting, the going method was to literally sketch a pattern based off of your 2D drawings you had, plus extreme trial and error. It's amazing how much has changed, and become so much more accessible for everyone, not just beginners. Loved this!!
@StarbyterOddities5 ай бұрын
Also! I totally feel that pain of minky slipping around while sewing; stretchy and fluffy fabrics are so incredibly slippery, they're a nightmare to work with until you get used to them. The trick I've found is to pin like crazy, more pins than you could imagine. You want that piece you're sewing to be RIGID there's so many pins. I've also found that sewing on one side over the other is very helpful, but that takes trial and error with figuring out your machine. A lot of people also swear by clips instead of pins when working with slippery fabrics, but I have yet to use any myself. If nothing else works, then a simple trick is to note which side tends to drift off of your guide lines (the top or bottom piece), and preemptively pin them so that your guidelines are misaligned; that way when you sew, both proper parts are getting sewn together. That can also take some trial and error though. Lots of practice on scraps will be your friend! Wonderful work as always ❤
@zedabyu5 ай бұрын
Haha yeah I wouldn't have even touched on plush making if these tools weren't available to us. Sketching the pattern sounds like an absolute nightmare!! Ah yes clips, I should really try that one out. I find myself still using the manual knob on the side to sew things slowly and my forearm hurts like hell after that lol, that's why I swapped to hand sewing in the end. Do you think it's still worth it to machine sew when there's so many pins in the way or will it be faster with hand sewing? I would love to do whatever's faster.
@StarbyterOddities5 ай бұрын
@@zedabyu It can be kind of fun if you have some idea of what you’re doing, but yeah if you’re starting completely from scratch with 0 knowledge, it gets a little rough! Plus it’s a big resource pit, which isn’t great when you’ve not got much money, If you do ever get clips and try them out, I’d love to know what you think of them. As for your question; in my opinion at least, it absolutely is worth it. It takes some practice to get right (minky and faux fur are incredibly finicky fabrics to sew!) I would highly recommend practicing on fabric scraps, it’ll not only give you a better feel for working with the fabric, it’ll build your confidence on the machine. Pinning the crap out of fabric is a tip I learned years ago from MLP plush artists, for tackling the hooves; which are just one big circle. It gives the fabric less chance to move and slip, by holding it more firmly in place. And by having the pins pointing outward off of the fabric, it makes it easy to pull them out as you go. You will want to take your time, which is where practice will help you, bc you’ll not want to use the knob for that (which you’ve already figured out, isn’t fun). Another tip for sewing I’ve seen is to stick your pieces together with a basting stitch, then tackling it with pins. Once sewn, it’s easy to remove. What I personally like to do is stick a pin in to corners/end pieces, and work inwards pinning straight through across then line; I use these just as marker placement to make it easier for me to actually pin, which I also do going from both ends inward, adjusting the fabric and “marker pins” as needed. I realize it sounds kind of complicated, but it works for me. I’d recommend testing different methods, mix and match what you like best, what works for you. If in the end you still find that you’re not comfortable on the machine, it’s totally fine to do full hand sewing!
