I have carved spoons from radially split wood for over forty years. I don't use patterns except when I carve a book matched salad set (spoon and fork) from sequential sections. This is particularly effective when the billets are curved and the two utensils nest together. I use the first carved utensil as a pattern for its mate.

Nice work. Quick and useful. Will last more than a generation if it has reasonable care. Often here in Virginia, it's the kids who hang around to watch me demonstrate.

I love the types of crowd I get. Its such a buzz. The kids are always the most attentive either quietly or full on vocal excited, but sometimes the mothers are properly won over while the dads just want out of there. Or you get a dad or older fella thats been really fustrated trying to work out how a spoon is made in there back yard driving them mad for months. In a few mins they are at peace with a bit of info. Love it.

Hi Zed, I have a suggestion for a video. Carving salad serving utensils can be very innovative and creativity is wide open. I have a photo I pulled from facebook that was submitted by another carver that shows an example of a finely crafted set of tongs. One of them has a cut out that I'm particularly interested in learning how one might go about making the proper cuts. I wish I could post it here

This is a spoon I'll try with my new starter kit. It'll be quite small, as the pieces of in the kit are 4x1 inch only. I'm not sure if I'll stick to carving after my first attempts, as I'm too terrified to use an axe. We shall see.
@Zedoutdoors3 жыл бұрын
It will all come with practise so don;t feel too worried about the axe. Worth mentioning that I have all of my tutorials listed on my website for easier navigation - zedoutdoors.com/video-tutorials
