Finally a man who figured out you can't figure out everything.
@odetoazam6 жыл бұрын
Alex Chaney if by figuring out you mean predicting the future, yes you can't. However there are ways to become anti fragile to resist negative outcomes, and it comes down to mindset.

It's an honor to live in the presence of a genius. Maybe 100yrs in the future, only then society will listen to this man (if humanity hasn't destroyed itself).
@education67557 жыл бұрын
Jane society might not be articulating the way he is. But if you look at voting patterns and other things happening around the world - society is for sure reacting in its own little way
@pedrotherabbit22227 жыл бұрын
Jane Smith Can you explain what concepts you think he has that are so important for humanity in general?
@janesmith1677 жыл бұрын
Peter The Rabbit In General, a change in the world's financial system. He peel the layers of our mental bias regarding financial systems. And it is also applicable in many area such as health care, education and government. In general, that we live in a non-linear world and nearly all of the system we develop are linear in approach. A world of uncertainty and randomness instead of the delusion of certainty. Examples Farming - we monocrop instead of embracing diversity of multicrop Education - memorization instead of understanding Finance - the discrepancy of millions of dollars between CEO and employee Health - drugs instead of food and preventative measures Taleb doesn't talk about these things, but he points out that the systems we developed (and using) are wrong. And he explains it why it is wrong. The problem is that our brain is wired to seek safety of certainty, but the world is random and filled with uncertainties. We need to create systems designed for uncertainties, chaos and randomness.

Peter The Rabbit As the title says "Intellectual Fallacies". The concept of Intellectual fallacies within our society. Intellectual fallacies from science, politics, religion, arts, philosophy, etc... These causes very inefficient and wasteful systems.

I like to watch interviews with NNTaleb in order to get a deeper understanding of his books. This is the best interview i have seen because the interviewer asks such excellent questions, so credit to M. McWilliams!

Many people in power would like to sweep his books and speeches under the rug. Thankfully, they can't. His findings can be applied to so many areas not just economics. One of these area is urban planning - the scale of problems is scary. Nassim, please look into this 'planning' business.

The Hamurabi Code was the first legal system or (what I can say for sure) the first legal system with the proportionality principle. The Code is interpreted as a "backwards" system - at least that's what I learned in school - but it was the first system that did not allow the king, for instance, to kill someone who stole from him - all he could do is cut the thief's hand. In France it took a revolution to make that a reality and it happened thousands of years after Hamurabi's Code.

46:00 the Market knows more than central planning, but the markets themselves cannot stand on their own, they need currency to allow the players to exchange, which leads back to bureaucracy and central planning .

30:20 The moderator/interviewer, David McWilliams, was born in Belfast and then Taleb starts talking about the Great Famine as if it was just the result of botatoes not growing well that time ...

Re: last A. Druids no skin in the game? They gave their all, as did Odin when hanging from Yggsdrasil. Meanwhile, I have yet to read or hear Taleb say anything significant about the environment. You know, that Great Economy upon which all others depend? But I pine to be corrected: Has Taleb drawn up some maxims or done the math on bleaching corals, climate change, mass extinction, and the like?

Mr Taleb is an interesting speaker (and writer) and I accept many of his ideas. However, he is mistaken about the captain of the Titanic not going down with his ship.
@5Gazto2 жыл бұрын
50:15 Do you have any evidence for that? To me it seems they simply don't care whether they get it right, only that they stay in power giving orders, because they are not held accountable. Even in my 3rd world country known as El Salvador high rank politicians of the level of a president have gone to jail.

What Taleb is doing is equivalent to saying, "you idiots don't know how to build houses! Let me show you how to build houses". To extend the metaphor, Taleb is saying that the houses are collapsing because everybody is incompetent. In other words, houses are being built by people that don't understand engineering. He then goes on to explain what the correct engineering is. This misses the point completely. What are the incentives that give rise to a situation where incompetence thrives? This is a political and sociological problem. It has to be solved with political solutions. If politics was a non-issue we would be arguing about the specifics of implementing various schemes. It's the same situation with climate change.

What is Taleb's I.Q. ?
@progressivewholesomeness49377 жыл бұрын
john anderson why is that important ?
@johnanderson26547 жыл бұрын
I.Q. is important in predicting the performance of the tested person on tasks which are similar to the tasks he performed on an I.Q. test.
@benabbouaissa19917 жыл бұрын
I have 100 now I can practice responding to IQ tests every day for a year I will have 200 !!! what is the point ?
@samus5126 жыл бұрын
Benabbou Aissa I've found that people who are dismissive of IQ as a meaningful index tend to think highly of their own level of intelligence while not actually being as smart as they think they are. IYI's you might say
@vx76785 жыл бұрын
Pointless question. A person with moderate IQ can have a much deeper understanding of the world than a person with extreme high IQ who can compute faster than everybody. There is something called as Emotional Quotient, which I believe is more important than IQ. For computations, we have computers but to understand how complex systems like global markets work needs a deep understanding based on experience that cannot be something compensated by higher IQ

Trump -- who got $200 mil from Daddy Trump at 18 - has NEVER had his own skin in any game. For that he has chumps and the taxpayers. Trump is the ULTIMATE other people's skin. Sorry, Nassim, I still love you tho'. D.A., J.D., NYC

well, i am skeptic of grand theories applied to all domains. Taleb got lucky to "predict" the financial crisis and then gone wild extending his grand concepts ( Antifragile, SITG, Blackswan ) to everything under the sun. narrative fallacy and other biases are well known, he is just a science popularizer. he wraps his writing in philosophical style to invoke profoundness. remind of post-modern bullshit..

LOL!!! Is this irony or hypocrisy? This "expert" who is trashing all "experts" and every public-servant/government-worker .. how much skin does this man have in the business of governance? I am not saying he is right or wrong.

Hari Mahadevan he was risk manager at wall Street who successfully predicted the 08 crash because he was able to see through the hubris of economists. he is speaking from experience hence has credibility.

Everyone has skin in the governance, we elect them, their policies and laws are applied on us and we bear the price of their mistakes. He and everyone is an expert since we are the system and system is the expert.
