This is what Nolan tries to explain to Mark, and it's only after he realizes that his child would live as long as him that he gets this. ALL the Viltrumites seem to have extremely strong parental drives, even Thragg who throws his kid's into Ragnarr pits to toughen them up (which I think is a reflection of how he was treated as a child) still has what seem like rather thoughtful conversations with his kid's and does seem to care about them in some way (and he doesn't really feel that way about ANYONE else only the Viltrumite race as a whole), he just care's far more about his own goals because he sees them as being the only way his species will survive. It's not just the relationships with their companions or the culture, it's that they now have kid's who will live alongside them, potentially indefinitely, and they also realize how they don't want that life for their children. Nolan himself say's this, and he was desperately hoping Mark wouldn't develop powers at all.
