This makes sense. "Zelda 3" was developed and beta-tested on NES hardware, as well as Super Mario World. While obviously being planned for launch with the SNES, these games truly shined on the SNES with the upgrades in graphics, sound, and gameplay.

Why do you speak of things you clearly know nothing about. Zelda A Link To The Past started as a Famicom game but was switched to the coming Super Famicom soon after it thus it was never developed nor tested in the Famicom/NES. And Mario World was written almost entirely in C and was compiled using a Silicon Graphics IDO compiler.

it's an impressive backport but I was honestly hoping that someone had leaked the 1989 famicom build hinted at in a dual interview between Miyamoto and Yuji Horii "Ever since I started making the first game in the series, I’ve been saying that the third Zelda will feature a party, one that consists of the protagonist, who’s a mix between an elf and a fighter, a magic user, and a girl. The fairy that appeared in Adventure of Link was actually a party member designed for Zelda 3. A girl who looked a little like a fairy and whose role consisted of reconnaissance. Like the characters in action games that don’t engage enemies in combat but rather go and scout out the surroundings and return to you safely. It’s also fun when action adventure games lets you choose who to send out. That’s the sort of thing I’m thinking I’d like to put in Zelda 3." ~Shigeru Miyamoto

The thing I most took away from this is that I still miss Ganon. I'm an 80s kid, and Zelda was my favorite series even then; still is. Link to the Past is my favorite Zelda game, and probably just favorite game, if I don't sit down and really think about it, and i really miss when Ganon was the big bad, and not Gdorf. When Ganon was the character, and not just one phase in the fight with the man, the legend, the Dark Lord. Nintendo graphics dont wven usually pull off video-level people graphics; no one would look at even TP, or Wild/Tears Link, and think he looked like a real guy in a costume, so the uncanny effect of having a CG monster interacting with an on set, real person is never the risk there, so I wish they could have another instance with the bipedal pig demon sorcerer, and not just weird man-looking Gdorf. I miss the trident, and a bit of the Saturday morning cartoon villain.😊 I'm just whining, but this ganme has one of my favorite Ganon fights, and he's never as good, again. In Ocarina, you just skirt to his left, and he can't even attack, even with two swords. After that, he's just a beast form, and usually not even the last, or he's DB, from Wild, which just sucks. God I'm old!😊

I wonder what kind of mapper chips they used for this port. While this looks great for what it is, I do wonder if they could have expanded the color palette a bit. The collision physics I could see being a bit tedious to program, and diagonal movement being a whole other can of worms.

I'm a bit confused why they didn't use Link's Awakening as the base for the game graphics. I mean, the graphics were designed to resemble the Super NES sprites relatively closely while sticking to the Game Boy's limitations. The way the sword worked in LA worked to do diagonal sword swings while only requiring three frames of animation, which means that the combat could have been a bit more reliable. Plus, since they were designed for black/white, they could be colored relatively easily on the NES. This is one of the games where it's impressive on what they were trying to do, it's just that it could have been done better. I know quality wasn't usually high-priority on bootlegs like this, but it just makes me seriously want to see somebody take an honest shot at making a GOOD port of the game.

The graphics for LttP were barely beyond what the NES could do already with various mapper chips. Just drop some entries from the tile map, and a couple colours--and they'd fit just fine LttP is not a decent example of the sort of things you could do with the SNES--at least graphically. The Diagonal movement, yeah, SNES gives room for that... but what the sprites and tiles had? Not really too much beyond what the NES could do

I vividly remember early 90's looking through the catalogue of one (back then) biggest German retailers and they had A Link to the Past… for SNES (which I didn't have), NES and Game Boy! Oh boy, was I hyped! There was a footnote stating something like "presentation and content may vary slightly between versions". I nagged my mother into ordering it. I had to wait a week or two (this was long before Amazon and that retailer was one of the first victims of Amazon's blazingly fast deliveries years later) and… oh boy, what a disappointment, because the cardboard box indeed contained a golden game. It was indeed Zelda, but it was Link's Adventure (which I already had)… Crazy to know it could have ended way different…

This game is one reason to want a super nintendo as well as my main reason was super mario world and street fighter 2. Lets be honest mario and zelda games were fun and enjoyable through the years. Super Nintendo were the good days. Imagine breath of the wild on super nintendo or the nintendo 64. A link to the past was my favorite game of all time because of the light and dark hyrule worlds. Yes definitely worth playing on snes because graphics were more impressive. Just like ocarina of time and majoras mask were great on nintendo 64.

0:20 How...would it not still be one of the best of the time? By definition, there aren't any new games "from that time period" to replace it because...ya know, we speak about the past. 10:13 I don't think that's a typo looking at it, I think they just couldn't be bothered to have seperate a and o-fonts, so they made a singular one that can be read as both.

I mean, about a decade and a half ago--when people told me that LttP had ridiculous good graphics--I would inform people that it is barely beyond what the NES could display. I'd cite Secret of Mana on the SNES and Ninja Gaiden on the NES as indications of how good graphics can be on both systems. With LttP being able to plausibly be put onto the NES with how they did their stuff This game pretty much justifies those assertions I made I will acknowledge the game is good... but keep in mind, at the time people were acting like all new games were trash for not living up to a set of standards that the "good games from back in the day" also never lived up to. I was mostly pointing out the issues with this--to let them know they were either being unfairly harsh on newer games, or unfairly lenient on older games (choose one--and be consistent about stuff). So I was mostly pointing this out due to being annoyed at the nostalgia glasses acting like the game was far more than it actually was. Which is unnecessary, what it was was more than enough that you didn't need to inflate things As per the issues that got dropped from the backported version (diagonal movement, context clues not as present, etc.)... that just gave me flashbacks to discussions of "close to arcade perfect ports" being a discussion... as nothing was going to be arcade perfect. It was more about getting _close_ to arcade perfect port... and honestly, if _only_ the things missing were missing, it would be considered a high quality port

im not sure if this was a rom hack, typically a rom hack would just be a normal rom of a game but where parts of the rom have been changed (mostly intended for playback on emulators) but i believe these entire demakes from SNES to NES were made fully from scatch! (although they did steal a bunch of assets from everywhere they could! )
