Hello Dave, really good root work and it was nice to see the tree had some nice surface roots that weren't all twisted and tangled. I would watch the wire that is going across the large root, it is right on the part of the root that flares from the trunk to the soil and this root will be very important in the future of the tree. I hope you can re locate the wire before it leaves a mark across the root and could possibly spoil the nice flare in this area. I think this tree has enormous potential for the future after the awesome work you did to the tree! I see a lot of beautiful trees at shows and many have wire marks across the surface roots that spoil the nice flow from the soil to the trunk.

Hi Nigel, thanks that's great advice. I will remove the root wires this weekend. The big root on the other side also had me concerned because it's actually two roots crossed over like crossed fingers... hopefully it will look okay after a few years as the trunk base swells that side too. Thanks again for your comments!

Hi, I love watching your work, very atmospheric. I could be wrong, but I would plant it facing closer to the edge of the pot, not the back side, to provoke roots in the back instead of the front, they do provoke branches in the eye. The pot choice is fine with this pot shape, but the back branches may be in short supply, little choice to cut. You make beautiful plants and videos

Thanks so much. This tree is due for a repot in spring, I think I will go for a slightly shallower pot. You're right about the back branches- I've been encouraging them to grow more this year, by facing the back towards the sun. Thanks again for your kind words!

Nice repot! Very envious of your weather and garden - mine is a swamp right now...

Hi, i've been given a zelkova that 8 years old and has a stunning curve in the trunk. Its been neglected and needs alot of tlc. What soil and fertilisor should I use to repot.

Hi, use akadama if you can get hold of it. And if you live in a cool wet climate, mix in some pumice or small grai lava rock for good drainage and long term soil durability. Also please tske a look at this video, should help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnWsg61ojqubnNk Also, don't add fertiliser to the soil, nit for about a month after repotting. Fertiliser is only useful when a tree is healthy, and not good when the tree is recovering.
