One of my favorite zelda cutscenes, and not one I've seen mentioned elsewhere here yet, is when you heal Pamela's father in Majora's Mask. You have a little girl who is all alone, trapped in a land swarming with the undead, her father turning into a monster himself, and the second Link heals him she just rushes up in order to comfort HIM instead of the other way around. It's a very sweet cutscene/moment that has always been one of my favorites.

Midna’s plea for Zelda to help Link while Midna is at death’s door is an extremely touching scene. I would pick that as Twilight Princess’s best cutscene.

Which makes me upset that they didn't make a conlang* for BoTW as even though only Midna has voice acting is it so emotional..! TP and SS teased maybe making a language with Zelda singing, Chad reading the spells, and some more... Making a language we could actually learn would be so fun! I know it's kind of Sony's thing with Gravity Rush and the Team Ico games, but still! * constructed language, like Elvish in LotR

"I... coveted that wind, I suppose." His monologue before the fight opened my eyes to the truth about being human, and that there isn't true good or evil, just good people that sometimes make bad decisions. I would love to see a sequel where Ganondorf does right for his people, and rules with a gentle heart.
@NytroDesigns
@NytroDesigns Жыл бұрын
@@Zyvelteas Exactly! I can just.. Imagine, it's a knock on effect, he makes one bad decision, born out of desperation to help the Gerudo stuck in the desert, and the baking unforgiving sun, and then he makes another bad decision, cause the first wasn't thaat bad. Then another... and another, and finally it leads to his plan, because each bad decision makes the next step that little bit easier and seem less bad. A game where we see through Ganondorf's eyes and what lead to all that would be fascinating, even if it's unlikely.
@swholliday1

It's really not that great. That it's Wind Waker's best cutscene really doesn't say much - there's lots of far better cutscenes in other games.
@Zyvelteas
@Zyvelteas Жыл бұрын
@@NytroDesigns I'm hoping that TotK will delve into this further. Maybe we play a portion of the game as past Ganondorf, or at least get a healthy amount of backstory. This scene in Wind Waker showed that he isn't just some one-dimensional "King of Evil", he is a product of his environment, and the desire to better it. Though his decisions steered him away from that course, what choice did he have, when he, like Link and Zelda, are pawns of the Goddesses?
@Zyvelteas
@Zyvelteas Жыл бұрын
@@swholliday1 I'm inclined to disagree on it not being great, granted there are, subjectively, better cutscenes in other media. What gives this one the spot is that his entire existence led up to that moment, which just before gave us the first real look into the man Ganondorf, not the King of Evil, just to have it stolen right from under him. Just like any human would when their ambition falters, he broke. Emotional displays like this one that don't rely on forced deaths, for example, are rare, and provide insight into the human experience.

I know a lot of people didn't care for Ganondorf's late inclusion in Twilight Princess because of how detached from the rest of the story he was, but that scene of him on his horse holding up Midna's helmet like some kind of war trophy is one of the most badass scenes in the entire series.

It's pretty consistent with his character, though, isn't it? We know from the jump that he's the threat, but he's happy to keep his hands clean and let his puppets do the work until he's left no choice but to step in. It's kind of his M.O. for much of the series.
@Bornheck
@Bornheck Жыл бұрын
I still don't understand how people think Ganondorf's inclusion was "late" or "a copout." The fact that Zant wasn't working alone was teased as early as the second dungeon, with Midna saying she has nothing but scorn for Zant's "supposed strength." implying she knows that Zant's power isn't his own. She elaborates a little in the third dungeon, saying that "His power is a false one." Then immediately afterwards, Zant himself confirms it by saying that this power is the power of his god.
@mlevine2005

I love the entire finale to ALBW, more so what occurs after you defeat Yuganon. Hilda rises and she's determined to fight Link and Zelda by herself. Ravio's arrival, and the reveal about who he is. His speech as be pleads with Hilda. Link and Zelda get yo return home and leave Lorule to its doom. But instead, in spite of everything Hilda did, Zelda and Link wish to restore Lorule's Triforce. The look on her face as she sees the inverted triangles reform, the sun shines on the kingdom for the first time in who knows, and the simple "thank you, Zelda!" Good stuff. Great ending. My favorite cutscenes from the series are all over the place. I love Link's Awakening's beach scene with Marin for giving so much life to Marin. I love Majora's Mask's scene where Link is trapped in a Deku form for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is Aonuma having that same scene as a nightmare. I ADORE Colin's monolog after you save him from King Bulblin, where he finally understands what it means to be courageous. Tons of moments from the series do so much to impact the story and the player and it really shows, especially in games like Wind Waker and Twilight Princess

The story between Link and Saria is one of the saddest for me, and it hits close to home. I had a girl I grew up with that considered a very close friend I grew up with that I met when I was about 3. Her and I always got along, always talked, and even had sleepovers here and there. Just friends, nothing more than the innocent joy of 2 young souls growing up together. Fast forward to me being 9 and I had to move out of are I lived in, about a good 15-20 miles from my home, this was back in 1999 so it was considered far away back then with no technology to keep us connected. I always thought about her, and always wondered how she was doing. Fast forward a little more to when I was 14 and I ended up bumping into her again. She was completely changed when it came to appearance, and had now grown to a beautiful young adolescent, but still had the very same pure heart that I knew when we were young. I, on the other hand..... had seen atrocities and trauma that scarred me, changed me, and eventually corrupted me looking back. She would try to conversate with me, and try to bring up the good ol days, only for me to push her away and say that I was no longer that kid she knew. As much as she insisted that the kid she knew was still inside of me somewhere, I refused to let her, and refused to get closer to her. No because I didn't want to, but because I knew deep down inside I would end up destroying and corrupting one of the most beautiful souls I ever met growing up, and that was something I could not live with doing. Needless to say after high school I lost all contact and whereabouts of her..... but I always think of her, and always think of what could've been. I hope wherever she is, she is living in peace, love, and harmony with the family she deserves to have. Thanks for all the memories Karla Vela Lopez.

In TP, as Wolf Link and Midna are in the Sacred Grove, being attacked by Skullkid while Saria'a song plays really got to me. Really brings home the fact that the Hero was remembered after all.

For the number one I’ll have to agree. There is something very primal and satisfying about Ganon forgetting the most basic pieces of lore in his excitement and forgetting that he actually has to have physical hand on the triforce. Plus the grandfatherly vibe of the King drives home the feeling of comfort, and you see really how much of a guardian this guy has been the whole time.

As someone who grew up playing LoZ games, that moment in Skyward Sword really helped everything click in my mind. I had never put alot of thought into them being reincarnations before that, or different timelines. But that game really connected me emotionally to two characters I had already loved through my life. Before the endless wars of good versus evil, before hyrule was even built up only to fall to ruin time and time again.. There was just a girl, named Zelda, born in a beautiful little village in the sky enjoying life with her best friend Link. A boy who loved Zelda so deeply, and whose loyalty was so fierce, that the Goddess Hylia herself would test his resolve and see if he would to chase his Zelda to the ends of the earth. And he did, without hesitation. I like to think now that their decedents through time, even in games where they have little interaction with one another (like TP) can still feel that love between them, even if it's not romantic. An echo of their original selves, the first reincarnations of the goddess and her hero.

I've always been partial to the scene in MM where Tatl and Tael first find and befriend Skull Kid. In just this brief scene we see Skull Kid at his happiest and saddest moments. There's virtually no dialogue, just the imagery of a sobbing Skull Kid who was just abandoned by his friends juxtaposed with the imagery of a joyous Skull Kid playing with Tatl and Tael set to Saria's Song. It's a really moving, empathetic depiction of his character. In a game as dark as MM there's something really impactful about seeing this brief moment of innocence and levity, especially with the (sort of) antagonist at the center of it. It's so simple and yet it commands my full attention every time I see it.

Personally would have put Twilight Princess' ending in the top spot. The reveal of Midna not only being alive, but that her curse was broken was so touching and that moment is topped off with a goodbye that, honestly, if Fi's goodbye made the list I think Midna's goodbye should have. Midna not only is another companion character, but one that has arguably the most compelling story of not only all of Link's companions but of all Zelda characters in general.

Fi's Farewell is one of my favorite scenes in large part due to it's musical arrangement. For most people it's Midna's Lament, but Fi's Theme is one of my personal favorite musical arrangements of all time. Also, man you sure can write a script. Felt like I was having a novel read out to me. Closed my eyes for a bit there and I could still see the scene in my head 🙌🏼

So many great cutscenes throughout the games. For me my personal favorite is any time Link pulls the master sword from its resting place and wields it once again. I get chills every time I see it. In the case of Skyward Sword I still feel the same when the goddess sword transforms each time until we get the iconic blade of evils bane.

I always loved how on that cutscene the game forces you to stop looking at the harp, it just closes the text box immediately. It caught me completely off guard the first time I played it, it’s sort of breaking the fourth wall a bit since they know players often stay a few moments admiring a newly acquired item.

Healing Darmani and Mikau's souls in Majoras Mask both hit me hard, even for how short and simple they were. Darmani's lamenting at not being able to save the people who revered him as a hero, Mikau's sorrow at not being able to save Lulu's (and persumably his) children, both giving way to feeling at peace with Link taking up their mantle to finish what they started.

I played my brother's copy of Link's Awakening around the time it came out in the 90s. I refused to believe the dream thing was actually going to happen, right up until the end and everything started vanishing. I was in complete shock. It was the first video game that brought me to tears, and there I was bawling (angrily might I add) over a greenish mini LCD screen, pixelated people slowly disappearing, with a simple midi tune chiming in the background. But man, it really left an impact, so many NES games back then didn't focus on story obviously, and our family didn't get an SNES so Link's Awakening was really a first for me. I fell outta the Zelda series my teens, got into different types of games, but the re-release of Link's Awakening sent me on a journey. I started to replay every Zelda game I owned, and then played every other I could find (17 out of 19 games, no FSA or Triforce Heroes). One of the last "new for me" games was Skyward Sword. I did it on the Wii, but it ended up being about a year before the Switch re-release came out anyway. I wasn't expecting to love that one as much as I did, but the characters and the cutscenes are ones I love the most and think about regularly. The Zelda cutscene and the Fi goodbye are my favourite ones of the whole series. The Zelda scene is one of the first to pop into my head when I think of the term "video game cutscene". Link's face breaking as he looks down from Zelda who is right there, the one person he is doing this all for, but he can't save her... was an absolute gut punch. After playing so many games of his stalwart character never faltering, that look right there wrecked me. The fact that he exits the room and nods at Impa in the exact way you always expect him too, somehow makes it hurt more. Also, the best part about this journey is that my kid joined me, and we even played both the Hyrule Warrior games together as well. Beating Age of Calamity co-op with him was a huge highlight, idc if it's canon or not, it was so much fun. We even started watching this channel together when this all started years ago, we're very fond of your editing style and theories. There are many days I'm picking him up from school and one of us will say "A new Zeltik video today!" and the other one gets excited, it's super fun. whew that's a lot of words i just used...

Ganondorf's execution in TP. Not just his sheer defiance in the face of death was great, but the fact that, by some twisted form of divine intervention, his life was saved by the power of the Godesses in the from of the Triforce of Power. That moment where the Triforce flickers within him to bring him back and gives him the power to break free from his chains always makes me feel like I can take over the world.

I think all of these cutscene moments are great picks. I can definitely relate with the explanations you give to each of them. Concerning your number 7 pick with Midna wielding the full might of the Fused Shadow against the deity form of Ganondorf, I think it's also a moment that shows just how much Midna has changed throughout the game. In the beginning, she didn't care about the Hylians and only longed to return to the Palace of Twilight and defeat Zant to reclaim her role as the Twili leader. However, after seeing just how much Link and Zelda sacrifice to help her, she comes to realize her selfish desires and throws them to the wayside in favor of helping the Light World as well. In the above scene, though she realizes her efforts to defeat Ganondorf may be in vain, she puts her life at risk in order to save Link and Zelda, even going so far as warping them away from the castle and out of harm's way first and foremost.

So many good memories 🥺 About #6 - I played OoT as a younger kid as I was just learning to read and spent a good year running around kokiri forest before I ever got to the deku tree. I had so much fun and loved saria and all the other kids and fairies and the lost woods and I eventually finished the deku tree and realized that it was just the beginning of the game... Cut to link leaving and I remember being So mad that he was trying to get out of there without saying goodbye to his friends and without saria? I remember being very moved by the scene on the bridge in a way that I had never been by anything i had read or watched at that point in my young life and Sobbing when link ran away without saying goodbye (and my mom being really concerned) ... That scene really left an imprint on me as a child in ways I don't think I realized,, and it happened just before things in my childhood got tricky. Oot is such a nostalgic game because of these personal ties but also because it really explored what it's like to grow up and know things will never be the way they were before. The depth of human emotion that these games can convey with such simplicity is powerful. The complexities of love, loss, despair and hope ,, this was a great list! 🗡️✨ (If you read this whole comment thanks for going down memory lane w me too)

I know a lot of people find Fi annoying and think there’s no attachment to her to make the final cutscene seem in place but personally when I played through SS I loved Fi and thought of her as my best friend on the adventure and her farewell is one of the most emotional moments in a video game for me

When I watch your videos, I always think we must be close in age, because of the way the parts of the series you hold dear so closely mirror my own. Even the intro of this video got me emotional - and you're not wrong, BoTW had some beautiful cinematics but they barely break the top 10. The attack on Kakariko is a core memory for me; there are many ways the media introduces the idea of bravery/courage, but none of them made me feel the way it did to ride Epona into the village, sword in the air, to rescue those kids. That moment taught me to be brave, even though bravery looks a lot different in the world we inhabit than in Hyrule.

Saving the Champions, Master Koga choosing to stay and fight an impossible battle with his “best lackey,” and of course defeating Calamity Ganon to ensure a better (alternate) future for Hyrule... Not to mention Zelda coming into her own as a ruler. God, so many good moments in that game.

My favorite cutscene has to be the ending of Majora’s Mask and the credits that follows. In every Zelda, getting to the credits feels earned but Majora’s Mask makes it special by only giving you the full cinematic credit if you completed every side quest in the game. It feels amazing to see all the hard work you did to help the many folks of Termina paid off in the end. And the ending of Link riding into the forest, once again the hero nobody but a few will remember, as the sun finally peers through the canopy, transitioning into the tree stump with Saria’s melody playing softly in the background is one of the most beautiful moment The Legend Of Zelda ever graced us with.

Then to make it properly bittersweet, you see the Deku butler crying over the dead body of his son during the ending, the Deku scrub that was killed to turn Link into one. A harsh reminder that you can't save everyone, no matter how hard you try. It elevates the ending.

@Spike16 I completely disagree with this theory, mostly because it's just dark for darkness sake, but also because Aonuma himself said it was bs. He however also confirmed that the elements from where the theory originated, i.e. everything relating to the theme of grief was put there on purpose. I like to think of Majora's mask as Link's way of processing his feelings post OOT. He is an adult in the body of a child (reminicent of Kafei, the only other character you play as in the game), has lost his best friend, just like Skull Kid, and saved Hyrule despite no one but a select few knowing about it (and he will end up doing the same with Termina). Maybe it's a dream, maybe it really happened, but what matters is that at the end of the day, Link found peace, accepted Navi was gone just like Skull Kid accepted the giant's departure, did as much good as he could and moved on. Twillight Princess gives us an epilogue for his life with the ghost of the Hero. He ended up going back to Hyrule and he most probably married Malon, since his descendant knows Epona's song and has his own Epona. He also probably fought and maybe died in the war that opposed Hyrule and the Gerudo after Ganondorf's true intentions were revealed, since he is in armor and seems to have gained more combat experience. In the end the Hero of Time is a pretty tragic character and Majora's Mask is him accepting this tragedy and choosing to live on and do as much good as he can anyway.

Ganondorf's desperate wish for Hyrule to come back frome under the sea feels so like a player who wouldn't want to play on another place as Hyrule. I think this is why we relate to him during that sequence. Playing past games from the license makes you like the world where it takes place, so changing from it to another one where it could have a whole new worldbuilding would be scary at the time or as a fan of the series. So, we don't want him to win, but we also feel bitter-sweet when the King goes for his wish to definitely bury Hyrule. So much is said to the player if he's played a Zelda before is maybe one of the reasons Wind Waker is divisive, and Twilight Princess was anticipated and ended up being a whole "classical Zelda" throwback.
