Something I forgot to mention: the Statue is found near a pond. The Compendium entry for Fairies says that they're often mistaken for fireflies. The pond near the statue is called "Firly Pond" (Fir(ef)ly), and in Japanese "Firefly Pond", and is full of fireflies! (For those asking, the thumbnail art is concept artwork for the Statue from Master Works!)

I think it's important to be familiar with some of the aspects of the Shinto faith when trying to discern this. You made a note that the translation from Japanese calls the being in statue a "god", which I am guessing the word "kami" was used in Japanese? The Shinto faith is VERY different from Western concepts of "gods" to the point that "kami" can be translated as either "god" OR "spirit". In Shinto, spirits and Gods are often local, and vary in power and capability depending on what they are "kami" of, and how many people give them offerings. In Shinto, a spirit and a "god" are essentially the SAME THING, with the main distinction usually being how much worship one is receiving. So for example, a "kami" with MANY worshipers is much more like "God" status, and a "kami" with very few worshippers or offerings would be "spirit" status, however if they are able to attain more worshippers, this kami would become more like a "god" kami. It's sort of like "ranks"... they are all the same, but the way the word "kami" is translated is a denotation of RANK, and to figure that out you have to know the context of the worship. In your video, you compare the Great Fairies, Hylia, the creature trapped in the stone, etc. and you seem really hung up on the difference between "God" and "spirit" or "fairy" but I just want to tell you that these probably mean very similar things in the Japanese translation. For example, the Great Fairys probably ARE also considered "kami", which can translate as god or spirit. My point is that Hylia, the being in the statue, the Great Fairies, and Malanya are ALLLLL "kami"... aka, gods or spirits. It's the same thing. To clarify, in the English translation, Malanya is translated calling himself a "god" because his status as a spiritual being is much higher rank than some of the other great fairies, and we know this because the people build their stables in his image and name a bridge after him, and pass tales on him along through word of mouth. This would elevate a "kami" to be more revered like a god. My POINT is that "Great fairies" and "Malanya" and maybe even "Hylia" are probably the SAME type of being (kami, in Japanese), but one of them is a higher "rank" and receives more worship (Hylia is the most powerful of all the kami > then lesser beings like Malanya would be lower in rank > and the Great Fairy is likely lower than Malanya). It's a very subtle translation tic that most people wouldn't really pick up on unless they are familiar with the Shinto beliefs. But the biggest point is that THERE IS NOT MUCH TRANSLATION DIFFERENCE between "god" or "spirit" so Malanya being translated as "god" is probably because Malanya is a much more idolized "kami".... or the statue calling itself "god" in Japanese is not really that strange, and can still mean it's a Great Fairy... at the end of the day they are ALL "kami"... Anyway, it's not that big of a deal, I just though you would find it interesting. I think you are right, that the being in the statue is some sort of old, probably corrupt or mischievous "kami" that was really similar to the fairies, or a type of fairy.
@MurasakiNoKami5 жыл бұрын
You could have shortened this comment substantially. You said the same thing in slightly different ways around 3 times. Regardless, I agree with you completely.
@dgrentz76355 жыл бұрын
I was thinking a similar idea but was going to comment with how the statue is a "god" and placed in stone form. So it was making me wonder if it was a higher rank God since the Goddess Hylia is obviously also a stone statue with the mini statuettes woven throughout Hyrule in BotW. I'm curious as to how the Hateno Statue got to its present location (curse, spirit got stuck there, etc)
@nworder4life5 жыл бұрын
There are plenty of gods in the zelda series, starting in SS with the dragons. Pretty sure the horned statue sis one of those lesser gods, the same way the dragons served Hylia and Hylia served the 3 golden goddesses.
@juneboom_5 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree with you, but I also think it's worth considering how the Zelda universe draws a lot from European cultures (clothing, use of monuments, architecture -- aside from the homes seen in Kakariko village..); the distinction between spirit, fairies, and gods might be necessary in this case. Gods are seen as an omnipotent force, while spirits and fairies are subsidiaries of them. Spirits and fairies were perceived to be more playful, if not mischievous entities (Great Fairy anyone?), so it doesn't seem too much of a stretch to try and define what kind of being the statue is. Fairies can also be seen as fallen "angelic" creatures that go somewhere in between something divine and something demonic. Bargaining with one's life force is a veryyy tight rope to walk on, but the creature in the statue *does* abide by the rules set in the deal. It could be dangerous but it plays a fair trade. I would also argue that Malanya (although with good intentions towards horses) is a self-proclaimed god with a peculiar personalty and frequent outbursts, betraying the fact that he is actually a spirit/fairy acting under pretense (probably for his own amusement). I don't think he's a very reliable character in this sense. But the main thing that doesn't seem to sit right is that Shintoism focuses mainly on ancestral worship, and that there is no supreme entity to believe in. Instead BOTW is rooted in the idea that there's an afterlife; Zelda should be able to use the triforce because she is Hylia reincarnate. Hylia also does not seem to be an entity that presides in nature (i.e. god/goddess of the sun). While there are other entities that exist all throughout Hyrule itself, the goddess Hylia seems to be the single, powerful deity that has created and oversees the world she created. Not that the Japanese creators couldn't have drawn from Shinto beliefs, but the connection to a single religion is more complicated than it seems. It would be interesting to know if any Japanese speakers could say if there are any notable distinctions between spirits, fairies, and gods in the original BOTW script.

Interesting! I've never thought of Rupees having magical properties. I always thought it was more the act of giving an offering to the Great Fairies that gave them power, playing off of the idea that it's worship from mortal beings that gives gods their power. The greater the offering, the stronger one's intent to worship, and thus, the stronger the fairies become. As mysterious as Rupees are though, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they're magical.

I think that Rupoors, when in close proximity, destroy/drain away the energy inside of Rupees, thus rendering them less valuable/useless. Combine that with the magickal armor, fairy fountains, etc. and it seems like not only do Rupees have magickal properties, but it is that magickal property which is the currency of the world.

I love the idea of the horned statue being a Great Fairy. Shame we couldn’t see it as a Great Fairy, using a mild amount a rupees (maybe 100-200) to open its bud. Normally, when the Great Fairies’ buds are opened, an ominous smog emanates from the pod within, before the Great Fairy emerges. Maybe the horned statue doesn't want to harm Link, because Link's intentions and motivations are pure. Figures in myth are frequently like that: benevolent if you're the right sort of person, but absolutely has potential for malevolent deeds if you're "wicked" in some way. And what's wicked may vary from figure to figure. I could absolutely see there being a Great Fairy who will happily help you by way of rupees, if you need it for something good (like, beyond Link, maybe this Fairy would be totally chill if someone needed to feed their family or something,) but if you're literally just being greedy, you're gettin cursed.

Midas was a king and he lived a beautiful life with his daughter. But he wasn’t happy with it. He wanted more. More money. So he prayed for gold. When he woke up he went to hug his daughter. Zeltik, I gotta pass on a combo theory about this that I think you might enjoy: part one: the horned statue is the poe keeper. He dealt with souls and money. Poes are the source of jovani's curse because they pulled his soul out and split it. (This might be why the statue doesn't want to reduce links hearts past the start-out 3: this would repeat the Jovani tragedy that probably was the reason the Poe keeper was cursed by hylaia.) It is also worth noting that souls seem to be what we are gaining from monks in botw, and pulling them from link, they almost look like poe-fire. Part 2: Melonia is the combined soul form of melon and eponia from OOT. Melon is half gerudo according to her father. Melonia has female gerudo hands, and when interacting is complete, goes lax like a puppet. This may indicate that being the daughter of neburu, melon may have became a sage-like mystic

That is who I used to be" He was the Triforce of Power holder who was turned into stone by a previous incarnation of Link just like Ganon was transformed into stone at the end of Wind Waker. His redemption is to help this incarnation of Link on his mission to rid Hyrule from the Malice he used to be himself.

Except there are 2 other Ganondorf's aside from the one in the Adult timeline. In the Child timeline, he died in Twilight Princess and reincarnated in Four Swords Adventure, getting trapped in the Four Sword. In the Downfall timeline, he died in Link to the Past, died again in Link Between Worlds, and died again in Zelda 1.

The Great Deku said "a bit wicked" not exactly ganondorf material, unless it;s so old and powerful, like the goddess Hylia that it can deceive one of the wisest beings in existence. My theory that if it was this, it would be a god of the Yiga. Think about it, the Yiga defected from the Sheikah and are trained in disguise and deception. It would make sense if they worshipped a god that represented their beliefs. Thats being said, it is a stretch and there is no evidence to support this. I just enjoy making these strange connections

Most people I talk to think it's the Happy Mask Salesman being punished for his reckless pursuit of power through masks. The gods were angry with him, so they morphed him into something that would never be able to travel or die, but kept him hidden in the shadows like he always preferred.

Matt Gales the only “demonic” mask we know he owned was Majora’s Mask, and his personality type seems much more likely to be the kind that was keeping it out of the wrong hands than to use it for his own nefarious purposes. Again, people always like to assume that mysterious intentions = evil intentions.

I never really thought about the backstory much, but I did think about why Link could hear it when no one else could. My guess is that it's because he's gained the essences beyond the base stuff. Since the statue doesn't take from him beyond the base, it would make sense if no one else could hear him because they have nothing to trade.

My theory is that the statue is Batreaux, the Skyloft Demon. They look very similar with the wings and horns. I know Batreaux becomes a human at the end but what if he still retained that desire to take parts of peoples’ essence, eventually angering Hylia and being trapped in the statue. It also explains why he won’t take enough to kill Link because he’s still a good person

Funny thing, I had a really hard time finding the goddess statue in hateno, and for a while I thought that demon thing was essentially there in place of one. Actually thought there was some kind of secret evil conspiracy going on for a bit, probably due to playing too much Skyrim. I mean, a major town that has no shrine to one of the divines but has a daedric one hidden on the outskirts just screams out "Daedric quest."

fun fact: 4 years later, in TOTK you can find the same supposed Demon statue in the hole in the training grounds once you beat your first dungeon. instead of taking your hearts, it takes your hearts or stamina in exchange for Rupees. is it fair to assume the residents of Hateno gave it to the resistance before the events of TOTK and they hid it away knowing how dangerous it is?

The first thing I thought when I learned it's origin was that he used to be the guy who buys big poes in Ocarina of Time. Edit: I didn't know the japanese game had information that the american version does not. I hate it when localizers pointlessly change details.
@yang66424 жыл бұрын
The Japanese version has plenty of stuff not found in the English release, for instance the Sheikah Slate in the Japanese version doubles as Link’s diary. Also in the Japanese version it’s explained that Ganon’s transformation into the giant Dark Beast boar creature was due to his unwillingness to give up on reincarnation, Ganon supposedly giving up on reincarnation was simply a translation error in the English release.

I'm still suprised this wasn't mentioned in the video. The connection of rupees for life spirits made me think that it had to have some connection to the OOT poe dealer.
