4:29 So is the potential difference(voltage) across both the depletion layers the same? That is, even after heavily doping the diode, the depletion region has the same number of "space charges" except they are concentrated in a much "narrower" width? Or is it that due to increased diffusion current (which corresponds to the "rate" of majority charge carriers), more space charge is present in the depletion layer?

Thank you very much for your explanation one question? If the field of the discharge region in the zener diode is stronger than the normal (pn) diode, then why do we have only 0.7 V potential drop in the direct bias of both diodes Zener diode field is stronger so we have to apply more voltage in forward bias to overcome it

Sir I have a doubt In Zener diodes, there is a very strong current flowing in the depletion region (as the depletion region is very small) 1. So the strong current in the depletion region is not caused by the voltage that is being supplied to it, right? 2. What is the purpose of reverse biasing it? Why not forward biasing? (It must conduct electricity very heavily, right? Because of an already small depletion region which is created by forward biasing, and if we dope it now, it will conduct much more) 3. Why should we even bias the Zener diode, if the current caused in the depletion region is not due to the voltage supplied, and removing the voltage supply (stopping reverse bias) will only aid in the process, since the reverse bias is causing the depletion region to become bigger, and if remove the voltage supply, won't the depletion region become smaller, and hence a much stronger current will flow through it. (Because lesser the depletion region, more thecurrent flowing through the depletion region, right?)

Purpose of a zener diode is to generate more current due to movement of minority charge carriers under reverse bias condition. That's why we don't apply forward bias. Depletion region becomes small due to dopping... The concentration of positive and negative ions increases so that... Electric field also generated. The purpose is to make diode to conduct more electricity under reverse bias condition then.. Why we have to apply forward bias...?. Then its right that the flow of charges is independent of voltage inside the depletion region outside the depletion region it is necessary to supply voltage because the minority charge carriers have to move across the barrier(depletion region)thats why we apply voltage . Dopping is inversely proportional to width of depletion region. Thats why the depletion region reduces not because of forward biasing and voltage supply would not interupt the width because due to strong electric field. There is no possibility to widen the depletion region width.

@Khan Academy India - English why did you say the probability of a free electron knocking off another bound electron is less? If the width of depletion layer is less, then the ions will be more in that space( as also see in the diagram above) or will be tightly packed, so probability should be more....??

The contributing factor here is the number of silicone atoms ,, number of p and b atoms are very low as compared to silicone,,,, P.s. --in zener diode number of doped atoms per unit volume is more ,, but the structure is same they are not tightly packed in the second scenario.

Sir won’t the glowing electron at 6:30 just REPLACE the electron which you said is DISPLACED from its position ? As we know when 2 objects of the same mass collide elastically and one of them is at rest, the their velocities get swapped. Here the stationary object is under the influence of a force(Lies in Si valence band) hence it should further lower its chance of just escaping out from the stable octet, and even if it does, the approaching glowing electron must readily replace it under the pretext of completing the octet. If what I argue is true then there should be no extra current generated in the depletion region...

Why not ? Simply electric field will exert force on electron n due to strong force of attraction than the electron have in bond it will result into breakage of covalent bond and electron comes out.

That's a V-I graph(Volt - Current). In normal conductors ,the speed of current depends on volt (i.e. More Volt Higher flow of current, less volt lower flow of current). But in this semi-conductor ,the voltage is limited even though u give higher amount volt all because of the property of the material. So, when u reach a certain volt, the flow of current peeks like anything(but do remember the volt is stable and stops at a certain point).

The graph is a V-x graph (Volt - Distance). Here, the slope at a point will be dV/dx. This dV/dx is defined to be the magnitude of the electric field. The electric field is, in fact, a continuous gradient of electric potential.
