Check out Sheldon Heatherington as he practices short and precise landings for National STOL competitions in his "Redbird STOL" Zenith CH 750, powered by a 100-hp Rotax 912 ULS engine.
About STOL flying, Heatherington states: "It’s funny. I grew up watching aerobatics, and always wanted to do that. The precision, the artistry all was something I enjoyed watching. Then I got my license, and learned that landing was an art, the same with getting an aircraft off the ground as quickly as possible. I really got into it with the old 182. Two years of learning how to fly it to the best of my ability, competing with it. Then I got the Zenith. It is an easy plane to fly, but hard to fly well. I learned how to fly it, then started learning how IT wanted to be flown. It amazes me how precisely it can be flown in a STOL situation. The smallest changes in power mean it can be controlled in a surgical manner, when trying to land short and steep. It can happily chug along at 45mph sipping 2.5gph in the pattern behind a gyrocopter, then I can put it on a spot over and over again. After practicing 34 STOL landings the other day, and takeoffs where getting off in 100ft or less was routine, it is always fun when I can practically become one with the plane. I don’t have to think about it anymore. It just goes where I point it. Who knew that such a boxy, ungainly plane could be so precise , and fun!"
