FUNCTION DESCRIPTION.
REPAIR AND ADJUSTMENT.
This training package from Volvo Service deals with carburetor Zenith-Stromberg, and remains
of 2 parts, each containing a slide set and an audio cassette. Part 1 describes the carburetor
function and part 2 includes repair instructions and the principle of setting
the carburetors. Make sure that the appropriate number of carburetors and screwdrivers are distributed to the students. (Preferably
these should have their own). Drive through part 1 completely. Then have students look at the carburetor details.
Discuss function etc. Show how the cold start affects the damper. Disassemble the carburetor as needed.
In case of problems, return to the current image and corresponding text in this booklet. Then drive
go through the pictures one more time. Stop and explain in case of uncertainty. Then take apart
the carburetor completely. Then drive through part 2. Stop the tape recorder in suitable places and
check the detail in question. For example, after figure 32. Remove the fuel needle and
check it and its labeling. After Fig. 34. Check the float level. After picture 40. Look
on the diaphragm and its heels. Look at the cold start and its location. After picture 44. Add
mark for quick-release screw and idle screw, play on lever and volume screw on
the opposite side of the carburetor. Then demonstrate current special tools. Assemble the carburetor.
Go through the adjustment procedure in the trolley using the workshop manual relevant to the model
and workshop message.

I have set it to 2.5mm from the carburettor body to the middle of the jet on my 1972 Volvo 144 (B20A) Still not smooth at idle 700~800 rpms. Hi, 2.5 mm is the setting of the main jet for the 1978-79 carburetor with an adjustable needle. You will then need to use an adjustable needle to fine tune the carburetor. This is the only way without special tools. Or use an adjustable main jet, then needle must be flush with piston face.

​@@patricksgarage Hi Patrick, Thank you for your reply. Yeah, unfortunately my needle and jet are both the fixed type. I overhauled the carburettor and also replaced jet and needle and adjusted it as best I could with information I found youtube video for an Stag or Rover. That’s where I got the 2.5mm measurement from. I've fitter 123 electronic egnition, new coil, new engine mounts, new oil, filters, plugs. No vaccume leaks that I could find. The car drives great and the spark plugs are nice colour after 2,000km of driving. Only just shaking and lumpy idle at low rpms. I need to play with it some more. I don’t think I want to pay they €105+shipping for the tools from Skandex. I like your videos.

Fuel jet height 2.7 mm (0.106 in) Basic-setting of jet. Carburettor set to give rich mixture. Position of jet is set exactly when setting CO-content. If the engine runs unevenly, then at idle it is always clearly visible. And you are sure that the cylinders and valves are normal. And the ignition is adjusted. 2.5 mm (+0,2 or -0,2) is the setting of the main jet before adjusting the needle if the needle is adjustable. But different models do not have the same settings. Or 2.7 mm (Volvo B20A) with subsequent adjustment with a pressing tool (100 €). Good luck!
