Well done. Looks like you got a fantastic specimen of a Zenith. Challenging yet co-operative because of good design.

Greetings from Ireland, Like you, while aligning a.m. RF sections I would set the generator frequency, adjust the setting on the radio and adjust the oscillator trimmers at both ends of the band for max output, however during your procedure via the chart for this radio, I was reminded of a technique my dad showed me when I used to help him as a boy in his radio shop (late 1960's). He would set the generator , say 1.6 mHz and move the pointer on the radio to this indicated frequency on the scale. Then he would "ROCK" the tuning capacitor back and forwards slightly ,while adjusting the trimmers for a max signal. This resulted in best sensitivity for these frequencies at the expense of slight variations in how the indicator was pointed on the scale. However you could sometimes move the pointer to correct this error.

Good point. They actually tell us to rock the tuning capacitor, and I didn’t really understand what they meant. Nothing beats experience 😊

My mother-in-law asked me to see why the 3000-1 her husband had was not working. After quite a bit of searching the web, long before finding this video series, I read that there is an issue with "tin whiskers" in the transistors. The quick fix is to bend the case ground lead out of the way so the transitor case is not grounded. This brought the radio back to life. I tried to find replacement transistors but nobody carries them any longer. I can live with the radio as it is now, but I suspect the transistors will need replaced at some point. Also, I dont really get any stations on MC, M or LW. I am assuming it needs trimmed, but I do not have all the equipment seen here. Is there a way to trim these bands without all this equipment? AM and FM work great.

The tin whiskers trick usually gives the transistors a new lease on life. I know you can adjust the alignment by ear, and I’ve done that before, but it’s quite a tricky experience with this radio, so I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s better to find a radio tech who can do this for you.

Hi again, Manuel. You do not need to take the chassis from the case, at least for the AM alignment, and aligning from within the metal case is advisable. Cores "B" can be accessed from the "A" side with the apropriate tool as they are placed inline within the bobbins. I've seen you're using a metallic Allen wrench for this and that is a big no-no. You should use a plastic 0.1" hex wrench with the rod thinner than the hex end to access the "B" cores. This is not an easy tool to find but I managed to get a couple of them which I had to turn a bit in my lathe to make it long enough to reach the inner hex cores: www.pisotones.com/Zenith/3000-1/Tool.JPG I can turn one for you. You have my email, drop me a note with you address and I'll be happy to send it to you.

out of curiousity, why is that a no-no?

Well the cores of the contours after so many years can still be twisted and adjusted the contour. Receivers of production of the USSR had the cores of the circuits filled with paraffin or stearin and after 15-20 years they cannot be twisted, they are jammed and simply break when trying to adjust. There should be a crying emoticon here.
