@Dario Ronchi fantastic playing very good, I love playing the entertainer and the maple leaf rag too, it sounds so much better when played at the right tempo, which is what Scott Joplin mentioned on his music scores,,I find personally if ragtime is played fast, it loses that ragging effect, so I humbly speaking always now play these pieces in the right tempo, just my humble opinion, and ur performance of the entertainer and the maple leaf rag were the correct tempo,,great playing, greetings from wales uk.

Wonderfully refreshing treatment of this Joplin masterpiece! This is another of Joplin's work players usually rush through. Your tempo gives a whole new sound, not like the usual "Western saloon" mashing of the keys most give it. I'd love to hear you do more Joplin.
@Dario_Ronchi2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree with you. Joplin indicated "not fast" and therefore, not being a "tempo di marcia" as in Maple Leaf Rag, it is understood that joplin wanted to leave some freedom to the interpreter. There are many signs of dynamics and many "piano" that turn into "forte" and "fortissimo". it is therefore clear that the piece must be interpreted with typical techniques of classical music as Joplin always dreamed

That's wonderful when someone is consciously aware of the desire of a composer an adhere to his desires and intentions. It's not easy to do. Years ago the ancient classical composers complained that there intentions were not respected, so some conducters invited the composers to rehearsals. But sir God has Blessed you with a Gift, and your playing has touched the SOULS OF MANY .

Record a selection Scott Joplin's rags and I will definitely buy the CD (or digital)! I think you play them exactly as they should be played. Scott Joplin himself said: "Never play ragtime fast". I hate the speed-contest versions!
@ScruffyTubbles Жыл бұрын
I agree that this is brilliant. Just brilliant. It is played at the speed Joplin wanted it played (not too fast - circa 72 on the metronome). I don't say this about many performances on you tube, but I really think this is very good. The trick is not to play it too fast and to reflect within the piece I think.

I very much liked your Maple Leaf Rag! For The Entertainer, while not bad either, I think you somewhat overdid on the tempo changes. Regarding the acoustics I am somewhat confused: The beginning of the video indicates that you recorded this in a theater hall. However, the actual sound is rather "dry" like that of a smaller room lacking the type echos that you would expect from a theater hall. In fact, I think the acoustics in your Maple Leaf Rag recording resembles that of a theater hall much better.

I usually prefer Scott Joplin’s music with a steady tempo, same as yourself, with no rubato, but for some reason the Entertainer is one of those where it just seems to work, it can be played in so many different styles and still work!

Joplin may have approved, but I prefer the historically correct interpretation of ragtime, but you can only achieve this by gathering 200 working class folk and cramming them in a smoke-filled saloon built for 50 while the pianist plays on a crappy upright piano (and on an empty stomach).
