My first mirrorless is the EM10 Mark III and fell in love with it right away. It appears that Olympus made a few dial and button changes from the original EM10. They added a thumb rest to the body, moved the PASM dial to the right side and added a second function button. Surprisingly they have fit 3 dials, 2 function buttons and the video button on the right hand top. They have put the power button of the classic style of Olympus film cameras on the top left. On the Mark III the colour of the focus peaking can be selected and I usually use red.

I never noticed what you point out about being unable to use the Menu system in the EVF until now, but you are correct. You can view the supercontrol panel in the EVF, but only if your eye is already at the EVF when you turn it on. For non-Olympus users, there are TWO alternate ways to view/change your shooting settings. The supercontrol panel is a grid of settings turned on via the OK button in the D-pad. The other way is "live control," where the settings are on the side of the LCD. I use the former, and have had the latter turned off since I figured out how to do so.

Indeed, I recon that a used EM10 mark II is an absolute bargain, I picked up one with the EZ zoom kit lens for under £200 from a dealer with warranty a few months ago. The EM1 mark i is almost as good value for under £200 but body only, but you have to take your time to get one for that price.

I love the smaller OM-D bodies, which harken back to the OM film cameras, as you stated. My dad gave me an OMPC back in 1986, which started me on Olympus. In the mid-2000s, I discovered that the professional film bodies could be had “for peanuts”, and I picked up the OM-1n and OM-2n. Then, in 2016, I became aware of their wonderful OM-D line, and purchased the E-M5 Mk ii (not quite for peanuts, though). Thanks for this video!

I just picked up the mk 3 version for 250 quid with less than 1000 shutter clicks on it. I'm honestly stunned, big step forward in the control interface and ergonomics compared with the original EM5 I used to have. Its a really good camera and nothing important is missing. I would say if there is a weakness it is the contrast detect autofocus, but if you want phase detect you have to go EM5iii and that is a lot more expensive. Easy to work around by setting manual focus to a function button and have peaking enabled if the AF is getting confused.
@zenography79233 жыл бұрын
I guess there's always another feature to tempt us in the next model up, I find the trick is to use the machine within its limits - what it can do, it can do, and what it can't, it can't! Great images can emerge from any camera, from the simplest to the most complex!
@richardwalker45183 жыл бұрын
@@zenography7923 I definitely agree, manufacturers are always trying to sell us more camera than we need, which is one of the reasons I like your channel so much! Some people still prefer the version 2 EM10, as they stripped some advanced photographic features out of the version 3. For my intended use case I wanted the 4k video capability and greatly appreciated the simplified menu system and improved controls (comparing back to my old EM5). I figure for 250 quid for an essentially new one, I could probably live with it!

Of all the cameras I owned over the years (including full-frame from Canon and Nikon), the E-M10 Mk2 is the one I love the most. I second that. I've got the mark ii coupled with a 12-40/2.8 Pro and it's fantastic. I've compared the images with my Nikon D750 and for most situations, I just can't find any difference, except that the Oly has much better colour science. I don't print A0 size prints, so FF Vs M43 comparisons is irrelevant to me.

I've owned my used Mark II for 3 years: a real gem. It came with the Olympus ECG-3 camera grip, which I thought I wouldn't use it, as I too like the camera's tininess, but in fact, I always use this precise grip, so well-designed. The over exposure is puzzling; you have probably checked your metering mode? Spot metering can give some unwanted results. Another idea is to reset the camera back to factory settings, which is the second menu setting in the "1" menu.

A great little camera. Olympus were always more imaginative in their designs than the big brands. I've found that quite a few vintage lenses on mirrorless or dslr cameras do overexpose shots. As what you are seeing is 'live' this doesn't matter - just adjust to suit. TIP: Make sure to disable the EVF boost if you are using vintage lenses in Manual mode or it will stay bright whatever the settings - it's switched on by default. For discreet street photography, flip out the screen and look down to compose. People will think you are messing with your camera. Great for candids.

I have the Fn2 button set to Peaking, and Fn1 set to Magnify. If your camera has Peaking on Fn2, then it must be that way because the previous owner set it to that. (Unless that's the camera's default until you change it, not sure....) I use Magnify almost exclusively with film camera lenses, and you can be very precise with it. Thanks for another insightful video with some lovely images! I love the small form factor and couldn't care less about sensor size but my concern is that the 2:1 crop factor changes the field of view so dramatically as to throw me off the composition. A relatively normal 58mm would view like a telephoto and if I want to use a 35mm on the street, I have to find an ultra wide 17mm and potentially deal with distortion at shorter distances. It does seem like moving to m4/3 means investing in the entire system, including the lenses. Did you feel that way or was it easy to adapt for you?
@zenography79233 жыл бұрын
I didn't find it a disadvantage to be honest, perhaps because I like a focal length of around 100mm or so. It can be difficult to find wides for m43, but the chinese lens manufacturers make some very nice wides for aps-c and m43, and they're very affordable too!

Yes, Olympus has great color science, and lenses… but menus are not the best. I really like the Mk II version of this camera (w/ 5 axis IBIS). No overexposure problems on my EM-10ii… I use spot metering.

A great little camera, no doubt about it!

I wonder how Pentax 110 lenses would work on this Olympus ,would make a nice small setup
@zenography79233 жыл бұрын
I should think they would work quite nicely, it would be interesting to try them out!

@@zenography7923 yes the only problem could be the image circle of the lenses not covering all of the sensor (but I think it will cover) . By the way , hope you will enjoy the game 😌

Tempting, but I find it hard to justify the micro four third approach, especially with vintage lenses, cos the M43 sensor needs a really good lens, to deliver the kind of resolution, to a small sensor size. So to get the quality on an M43, you have to spend on a lens which is more expensive than that of an APS-C camera. a plus and minus that cancels out. And M43 is not the best for low light photography. Furthermore the camera is not smaller than many other APS-C alternatives, so the size advantage does not exist. And if you are using vintage lenses, the weight of the lens is exactly the same, so no advantage. But the prices for used Olympus bodies are not bad. The only advantage I see is the metal body, which is a lot better than the plastic bodies, on the Sony APS-C...., which might be important for some photographers, and the controls are nice. Great workflow.

I guess there are pros and cons for the m43 system, but this camera shows it can make great images!

@@zenography7923 , come to think of it; new or used the Olympus line of cameras and lenses are bargains. Thank again for another informative video.

The Mk II is a big upgrade - higher resolution EVF, 5 axis stabilization and other features. For only a little more you can get the original E-M1 - better build quality, more custom buttons, better ergonomics but a bit heavier. I got mine for less than $200. in good condition.

Here is a shot taken with an E-M10 Mk II and an "inverted" Minolta MC Rokkor - PF 58mm at f/1.8. The lens is mounted in the other direction with the front facing the sensor. I use a dumb inversion ring for this (55mm/FD mount) + a focal reducer (FD mount to M43). As you can see, the shot is very sharp. www.flickr.com/photos/130159606@N03/51304311967/in/datetaken-public/

Wow, that's an incredible shot! I wouldn't have thought that old Minolta capable of such a sharp image - excellent work!

@@zenography7923 Thanks! This old lens is a gem, especially when inverted. Also, a very cheap macro lens in this configuration! I will take a photography of the whole set up.
