I always feel that at the end of one of your reviews I have the facts, pros and cons, and your feelings on those which, all the same, you do not use to batter the viewer to your conclusion (unlike lots of other reviewers). Thank you. Oh, and nice oranges!

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. In the end, the choice of a camera depends on your style and the photographs you plan to take. I'm certainly not capable of making a recommendation for anyone except myself - so I try to point out all the of issues I find valuable in making a decision. For some people it's features, for others it's usability and that's where I had issues with the E-M10-3 - great features, terrible usability. Sunkist.

This is my kind of video, appreciate the super clear zoom-ins to highlight the camera build and features (ngl it looks bigger than it really is). I like your usability focus and as a usability researcher myself I think I'm in for finding lots of problems with the experience of this camera!

I just received a new one today. It took about a half an hour to set it up the way I like it for stills, which is why I bought it. I also got the 12-40 f2.8 lens, which is as heavy as the body is!! I have been shooting for a long time, but do not have the patience for complexity and deep menus. It seems to work well, fits my right hand better than any other small mirrorless camera does, my fingers naturally rest on the shutter button and dials without moving my grip. I prefer the tilt screen vs a flip out screen, the EVF is good enough and the build quality is better than I expected. All for not much money compared to almost anything else. I just sold all of my Panasonic gear except the G85, which I intend on using for video mostly. Now to get a 17mm prime, a 30mm macro, and a telephoto. Thanks for your review, a most excellent and complete one.

Well, lots of negatives here, but I've looked at some very high quality shots on Flikr and equally high quality videos which show some lovely natural colours and beautifully sharp footage equal to the comparable and excellent GX80/85. I think both are fantastic cameras for the price. We get so used to "features" and deep menu tweaks and sometimes that obscures the most important thing : The IMAGE. I think there are a lot of harsh comments here about almost everything except the pictures!

The IBIS is incredible, and did I mention it is TINY?? This paired with the 17mm 1.8 are my “goto” for street and travel photography. I do agree the menu can be frustrating. I picked this camera up in October. I agree that the movie settings were hard to find at first but there is a lot of options once you dig in. The video quality was surprisingly good, the stabilization is amazing. Thanks for this video, it answered a lot of questions of some of the features. It's also nice to see Toronto in these scenes. I'd recommend the camera but wished the software allowed more customization in the different modes. This may have been a choice to help intuitiveness but would limit users as they grew with the system.

Nice review....I chose the E-M10 Mll over the lll for its metal body and feature difference and great price with a better kit lens for $449 USD. There IMO is no other camera in this price range that gives you a decent IQ and feature set. While no camera is perfect Olympus keeps it's zen. My example is fast to touch focus in all modes. While this is a complicated camera with it's limits, it becomes second nature with use (like any camera). Its a great complex camera that is very capable and a great tool for fun photography. Olympus ZEN :)

Thank you so much for your thorough walkthrough of the camera! At 11:56 is exactly what I'm looking for! I wanted to know if there is sequential high in Silent AP mode. Silent mode is not fully configurable probably to not complete with E-M5 and E-M1. I hope I can live with Programmed aperture and shutter. I had hard time choosing between the Mk II and Mk III, but in the end, I choose 4K over fully configurable Silent drive mode.

Your criticisms of the E-M10 were probably somewhat deserved, but you miss the point, in my opinion. I've paired mine with a Zukio 14-150mm lens and the complete package is tiny and weighs almost nothing compared to similar cameras. As a hiker and amateur travel photographer, I don't think I could buy another package this easy-to-carry that performs this well. Sure, menu items may be awkward and hard to find, but frankly, after they're set, I don't really use most of them. The basic functions of this camera perform just fine. In fact, all things considered, they are flat amazing. Just my opinion. Thanks for the overview.

I watched this because I couldn't find certain settings I like changing. Very frustrating. I got this camera for my wife and she found the method of live composite in Manual mode on the Mark II annoying. When I showed her the AP mode, tap live composite and tap the point you want to focus on she really like the more automatic way of this option. Perhaps she will use the Manual way later for more control. My annoyance of this advanced photo is you can't set your focus point using the D-pad. You have to touch the screen. Olympus really did take away a lot from the menus that I would prefer manually setting and stuff that I feel she could grow into. I think they do this not only for user friendliness but to push someone to the E-M5 with all the "better" options.

Thank you for the in-depth and no-BS review. This camera is at the top of my - still not concrete - list. I bought a Canon 350d in 2006 and an Olympus Pen ep3 in 2013 because the Canon didn’t have video. I want to improve my technical skills without spending any more than this costs in 2020 and without adding weight of DSLR cameras. I don’t care for vlogging, but I do wish I could print larger than a 16mp can produce. Would you still suggest this as an ideal camera for me? The IBIS is a huge plus.

I like your reviews but it seems that the conclusions are almost unrelated to the review itself. A suggestion....it might be more useful to compare the pros and cons of each camera to its competitors and leave the judgment question up to the viewer...since different folks value various capabilities/weaknesses differently.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I appreciate your comments. I do try to leave the judgement as to relative merits of each camera to the viewer - I would never, for instance, say that one camera is "the best". What's best for one is not the best for another. I may describe a feature as "best in class" or "unique", but as I often can't have the cameras side by side, doing direct comparisons isn't really in my portfolio. I do understand when you say that the conclusion seems unrelated - for me, I often get to the end of a review and feel that I've nitpicked over a lot of usability issues without addressing the real value of the camera - which is why (I think) that happens. Thanks for the opportunity to share my thoughts, I do enjoy interacting with my viewers - and I'll keep this point in mind.

Although there's lots to like with the M10 M3, I'd probably go with the A6300 - unless you're planning on shooting a lot of video. The M3's amazing stabilization and the Sony's overheating would swing me back to the M3, ins spite of its issues.

One thing you didn't mention, or perhaps it wasn't an issue with your example, is that the kit PZ lens tends to be very soft at the sides. Often examples are softer one side than the other, which makes me wonder about the quality control they find acceptable. The menu system has been a mess for a long time and while they have altered it somewhat on this model, it doesn't seem to be as improved as it could have been or should be

It's hard to complain about lenses when I'm reviewing the camera. However, I do leave it to my viewers to draw their own conclusions - and to check other reviews, like dpreview who do more in-depth quality and lens analysis. That said, there are few kit lenses I've ever liked.
@hedydd2

The way I look at it is that this camera is mostly sold with that lens and you have mentioned it and the picture quality of the camera taken through it. So I think its only fair to warn that the images will often be soft to the sides. That doesn't stop me using it, but I must say that I prefer the Panasonic 12-32 manual zoom, apart from the lack of manual focus control on that lens Have a happy Christmas and New Year, and thank you for your reviews, which I and many others enjoy very much.

As someone wanting to taste a bit of photography, I'm wholy unsure about which camera to pick. This one is more attractive to me, mostly aesthetically, because it has the retro look, especially the silver version. The lumix G7 from panasonic on the other hand seems to have far more buttons and fun settings, just like this camera, though from what I can tell in less settings. Sadly, no retro style. What would be your opinion on this matter? Are aesthetics more worth it or the handling of the buttons and menus? I don't want to spend too much on a camera, in case it doesn't quite fit with me.

Aesthetics are important - you have to love your camera, and take it out proudly. If the look isn't pleasing, you won't be a satisfied user. Hey there, Maarten. I just wanted to give a bit of a follow up on this story. I've bought myself a camera and while it doesn't have interchangeable lenses or a retro styling, it does what I wanted it to do, being allround photography. As a stranger to the world of photography, I didn't know what style of photography I would like or dislike. If I wanted a retro camera, with the low low budget I had, I would limit myself to a single style, or at least lose a few styles along the way and not get to try them out until I got a new lens. My colleague suggested me the sony DSC-HX400V, which has a fixed lens of 24mm-1200mm. This means that I can do nature photography and close ups, whilst also playing around with for example street photography. The lower price which with accessories and all fell in my budget. Now, I can try everything out, learn the very basics and then make a choice for a retro camera in maybe a few years if and when I'm fully accustomed to photography and know what specifics I need and want. I've never seen a review on it on your channel and I personally would recommend it to the people like me, who are very indecisive, not sure about the specifics and want to try everything out without committing to a higher budget. I still wanted to thank you for the recommendations, which I will keep close, once I'm fully ready to buy a camera on a higher budget.

It's a difficult choice. The selection of m-mount lenses is very limited compared to M43, but if you have older EOS lenses and an adapter, you might be all set. The larger sensor on the Canon might make a slightly higher quality image. If you have experience with either brand, you might prefer its menu system. I'm currently debating between this camera and the Panasonic GX85 as my first mirrorless. Do you have any thoughts on the relative strengths of the two? I see in this video you're not such a fan of the Oly, and you seem pretty enthusiastic in your GX85 review, but I'm wondering why you might pick the GX85 over the Oly in a direct comparison, if that would even be your choice. I've been using point and shoots for years, mostly for travel and hiking and always valued pocketability... thus, small and light w/EVF are key for me. Personally, they seem to be almost identical in features. I love the look of the Oly and it's live comp modes seem fun but I'm afraid of the paired down other features. No custom "myset" modes, button customization limited to the point of being nonexistent, very confused by inability to access drive mode in HDR, BRK, or exposure over 60"...can't use 2 sec self timer to eliminate shake from pushing shutter. I'd almost want to get the mark ii instead but the improved grip really does make a difference, and I feel the add-on grip of the mark ii adds too much bottom bulk. Also there's 4K..while video isn't important to me other than the intriguing idea of using 4K video to pull 8mp stills...still not sure if GX85's implementation is gimmick or value added and could I just do the same with 4K vids from the Oly. I love how customizable the GX85 is.

Thank you so much for responding so quickly! I shoot photos almost exclusively. And I value something light and compact that won't bog me down on a hike or trek. I like shooting landscapes and moving water as well as architecture, graffiti, and some street photography when traveling (which I do often). As a physicist and astronomer by training, I am interested in playing with astrophotography and long exposure now that I'm buying a more capable camera. The compactness is what's drawn me toward m43. That, combined with the price of Fuji lenses has ruled Fuji out despite the IQ. With regards purely photographic considerations, are there any particular quibbles or gems you think I should look at more closely in either the GX85 or the em10 iii?

All of these cameras should be suitable, and any camera that has a bulb mode will be able to take long exposure night sky shots (not my area of expertise). However, the E-M10-3's live time and live composite features make it easier to see what you're getting as you take the photo.

All three are good choices, depending on your specific needs. If you are shooting mainly stills, the Nikon may be the more flexible choice with the best selection of lenses. For video I’d prefer the Olympus with its superior stabilization. Mirrorless has lots of advantages, particularly for video, but may not be for everyone. Until Canon increases the m-mount lens selection, it’s hard to recommend the M50, which is otherwise a solid and light choice.

I need to upgrade my 'old' camera anyway, the black paint from the metal frame that holds the mirror is getting off the surface and constantly gets on the mirror and the matrix which is annoying. I guess it has something to do with the lack of weather-sealing of that body. I realise that Olympus EM10 III is not weather sealed either. My Olympus choice was mainly driven by the size and relatively low cost lenses. I can get it with three lenses (pancake 14-45mm, 45-150mm and 45mm f1.8) for £550. @@MaartenHeilbron nothing and I love that retro look. Just wondered if its ok at taking action shots. Used to own a D7100 but sold it, want something more convenient and easier to carry with me

Thank you for the quality review, though I can not decide if this is the right camera. I like the stabilization, an hope for quality low light and indoor photography. All automatic or manual option seem good enough, maybe with too many options to learn to learning curve may be too long. I would also like to be able to take decent action photos indoors, this is the one test I did not find, in your review, maybe I missed it. Would you recommend any other cameras that meets my requirements? I would like it to be a smaller camera like this, so it's good for travel.

In general, it's difficult to find a camera that can deliver action photos in a low light indoor setting. The best solution is usually a fast lens. Some of Sony's full frame models would deliver better low light performance, they are slightly larger.

I’m so lost between this one and panasonic gx85. I do photography more than video. Which is better choice for me? And this is going to be my first micro 4/3. Thank you

I'd probably choose this one simply for the excellent stabilization.

Hi Maarten, thanks for your reviews and comments. Would you give the same recommendation if it was the other way round? (more video than photo) Would the kit lens be enough in both situations? Thanks in advance!
@MaartenHeilbron

Always my pleasure, thanks for the kind words. Yes, the stabilization is quite remarkable for video, and the kit lens is sufficient to start. Primes are usually a better choice for video.

How do the pro's and the con's on this camera relate to the others that you've used in this same space? I'm traveling soon and I think it's time to dip into this market. As added info, at home, I am in a sports environment where I would like the option of good photo and video performance. Really enjoy the 'facts' as you see them take.

On average, I like this camera less than its equivalents from the competition.

Panasonic would be my first choice, second would be Sony. Each have a couple of models at/near this price point - as prices are different around the universe, I'll leave the specifics to you. Note that with Sony you'll get a larger sensor and better lens selection, if that's important.

Thanks for the video. It was very informative. I couldn't decide if I choose OM-D E-M10 Mark III or Fuji xt-20. I am just a starter and I will mainly use the camera for taking photos. I would appreciate if you could share your opinion.
@MaartenHeilbron

Honestly, for a novice either is fine. The Fujifilm cameras have larger sensors which offer some advantages.

Either my perception capabilities are getting slower, or your reviews are getting faster, or both. Whatever the case may be, it's all too fast for me. If the camera's as confusing as your review, I guess I'd better not buy one. Even though I own several Olympus cameras. The TG4 for instance I bought after seeing your excellent review - a decision I do not regret.

Right, understood, please accept my apologies. It's hard to pack all this stuff into a video that stays under 30 minutes.

Thanks for the reply. A suggestion: Maybe you could spread the long reviews over two videos? Dustin Abbott does that all the time. (Although in his case it could be argued that it doesn't always seem quite as necessary).

Thank you. I did survey this a few weeks ago, and the consensus is to have long videos.
@skakdosmer
@skakdosmer 7 жыл бұрын
Well, I didn't mean splitting the video into shorter segments. What I meant was that if it's difficult to fit everything into one half-hour video (and impossible to make the video longer than half an hour), a way of slowing it down a bit could be splitting it into two videos, allowing the total output to be longer than half an hour.

I own this camera and use extensively for stills. I need help deciding which auto-focus mode for action or moving people is most reliable. I've also had variable results with auto-focus for portraits.. A bit frustrating. Any recommendations?

It can be frustrating, as none are ideal or perform as well as you'd like. Obviously continuous, but after that it's hit and miss for picking out your subject.
