Recharging aquifers.

India has over 22 million bore-wells and its dependancy on groundwater is estimated at 65% of total water demand. Borewells are running deep and running dry. Artificial recharge through rainwater harvesting is one approach to top up bore-well waters alongwith demand management.
Rooftop rainwater harvesting, filtering the rainwater and then recharging it directly into the borewell is one approach. This experiment tries to understand how much rainwater can be directly fed into the bore-well during rains. Looks like a lot...

sir we are having the land of 2 acres in that we use to irrigate that land through bore well but now there is no water coming from bore well so when we use this method to recharge water how can we know whether it is recharged or not when all the quantity of water we inserted will flown out

what we are trying to find out is whether a borewell will directly take in water for recharge and if so at what rate . With this and a given intensity of rainfall and a given catchment area we can design systems to filter and let in say rooftop rainwater directly into the borewell.

you should make an airtight pipe connection from your tank to the recharge well for continuous infiltration with high infiltration rate. And you can not say that recharge is balancing after only infiltrating for few minutes!

what' the best way to recharge an existing borewell, we are thinking a 20ft, 1m dia hole about 6 ft from existing borewell ? Does this sound ok ? Great info, thanks Zenrainman

this is not the perfect way of recharge ! we should store rain water in an upper soil area and it flows downwards. if u put it in a down area it goes far down !

without proper profile of aquifer, how can one ensure it to be successful. For aquifer, several parameters need to be fulfilled otherwise it will be sheer waste of funds, scarce rain water.

bullshit test. what parameters of a well? screen section long vertical and horizontal conductivity of aquifer absolute level of water table absolute level of screen section without these and other parameters the test doesn't physical sense. for recharging aquifer in this way, you need very clear water used. And you need special construction of injection well used. Otherwise the biofilm in the filter zone will be formed some time after.
