I once bought off eBay some off brand theater sub that was CES, CAS something like that. I can't find them today...but that 300.00, 400w rms sub 15" hit very good a d had good punch and attack. I blew it one night drunk hosting a party with distorted signal. But I cannot find it ever again. I would like to find another one because it was really a good speaker and I've never seen another 1 in my life I never heard of it before or after. But for the price it was really a good deal and great sound.

I far prefer sealed subwoofers over ported, or even passive radiator subs as long as they get that radiator tuned properly. With ported subs I always felt like they called attention to themselves with music playing even after spending time getting them dialed in. I listen to bass heavy music and I run dual SVS SB-3000's. I find it much easier to blend sealed subs, and when I watch movies I don't get the same impact as I did with larger ported models but I get enough. To me non ported subs just have a faster attack and more immediacy. They do a convincing job of making it sound like my speakers are producing everything themselves. My second system has a single ported sub at the moment and I'm looking to add a pair of sealed or passive radiator boxes. I want something different than the SVS and I'd been looking at Rythmik for a while now. I've never heard any of their subs but I've read all the great reviews. This Emotiva S12 was never on my radar until now and these might be perfect. I have a pair of their Airmotiv T1 speakers and for the low price they're built insanely well and sound pretty damn good too. Emotiva offers some great gear for the money!

I have checked this subwoofer out a couple of times , its very well built but no hi-level input that i use for music playback, that way i get much better phase matching with front speakers because their getting the exact same signal ! 😆 Still a nice built sub bet it does punch hard , I think Rel only company who keeps the hi-level input on all their subs , My klispch Reference Digital 12 W has hi level input but cost 1k 10 years ago but class Ab hybrid

SVS SB-1000 is essentially a 13" cube with a 12" driver. Sealed sub. I have one and I love it. Used exclusively for music (for now). It has such a small footprint and the bass is very tight and impressive. I can't recommend it enough.

SVS SB1000 is 12" driver in 13" cube, sealed, and goes flat (less than -3dB) down to 24-25 Hz in room response. Very fast, precise, and textured bass. I think it is a very solid competitor (arguably better) at $500. For music it does amazing things. If you want to go lower go with PB1000 (ported), also at $500.

How would this compare to the HSU ULS-15 MK2 sub? It's a sealed sub that I've read is supposed to be great for music and still hold its own with with movies considering it's sealed. It packs a 15 inch driver in only slightly bigger package (18" cube) than the S12, but is a pound lighter at ~65 pounds, and has wider frequency response. It is a couple hundred dollars more than the S12, but very curious how the ULS-15 would hold up to the S12 or even an SVS SB-3000.

MY REVIEW: So, I received the S15. Bought SOLELY because of Z reviews. Otherwise I would have never have known of the Emotiva. (received my Kanto Tuk at the same time, again because of Z). THANK YOU ZIOS! However! Now only if I can get the effing thing to stand still. This thing moves non stop on a tile floor. One half to one full inch per beat. It wound up across the room with the cord stretched out like a leach. Granted it was cranked but that is Unacceptable. The feet need serious re-working in the grip department. No wonder they recommend "best to have it against a wall for best performance"....because a wall is the only thing able to stop it. Maybe someone can recommend a very sticky heavy rubber mat. Very powerful tho'. BUT WAIT, the feet are pretty sticky and the thing is HEAVY. Wait, WHAT??? It's actually lifting off!!!!! The bottom firing it so fucking powerful that it's lifting and jumping back! Guess that's good and bad, depending how you look at it. Mine sits on tiled concrete floor. In your ordinary house with wood construction.....your in for a treat, the entire house will reverberate. Seeing and feeling what it does on my concrete based floor, wood floor joists are in trouble. Think of it as your floor joists and wall studs going into a losing boxing ring.

So your explanation of the difference between sealed enclosures and bass-reflex enclosures (which includes ported and passive radiator) is...not very technical. The technical explanation is this: A cone speaker has two sides, a front side, and a rear side. When the cone moves forward, it's creating positive pressure in the front, but at the rear side, it's creating negative pressure, what we call the "rear wave", At low frequencies, the rear wave of the woofer can run around to the front, but it's doing the opposite of what the front wave is doing, so you get a whole lot of cancellation and greatly reduced LF output. So the simplest thing we can do is provide a fully-closed (sealed) box to enclose the rear wave of the woofer. And because a closed box is now being pressurized by that rear wave, it makes the woofer's job a little harder because that closed box acts like an air spring that adds to the spring stiffness of the driver, so we make the driver suspension softer to compensate. The combination of box air spring and the mechanical spring of the driver sets a new resonant frequency for the system, where transducer motion is at maximum. But all of the rear wave of the driver is being trapped inside the enclosure, and it does not contribute to output on the front side of the speaker. So we add another mass element that also has a defined piston area - this can either be a port or a passive radiator. At upper bass frequencies the mass element, which is either the mass of air in the port or the diaphragm of the passive radiator is mostly at rest. But because it is a mass, it can work with the air spring in the enclosure to form a mass-spring system with its own resonance, and where that resonance occurs, motion of the mass element is at maximum. This resonance also creates strong resistance to motion of the active driver, so the resonant system absorbs most of the acoustic load, and this is actually desirable because the port or passive radiator usually have more generous limits to their movement, so they can more easily move air at low frequencies without an increase in distortion. The resonant motion of the port or passive radiator is actually in-phase with the speaker at the resonant frequency ("tuning frequency"). So the bass-reflex system lets the subwoofer use its rear wave to contribute to forward output, without phase cancellation; instead you get addition, and thus more output potential without reaching excursion limits of the active driver (driven by the amp). You did correctly note that the main benefit of the passive radiator is to allow reflex action without port noise. But it also allows you to define a physical mass element that would be impractical to do with a port; you can hang a lot more mass from a passive radiator than you could achieve with a practical port, unless it gets folded up like a Blue Man Group contraption. But small enclosures tuned low need those longer port tubes, so instead a passive radiator is the preferred option for small-box bass reflex subwoofers, and that's why there are many of them.

@Acoustic_Theory4 жыл бұрын
The first units were Class A/B, but the original amp boards had an issue with noisy grounding so the amp module was replaced with a discrete Class-D module, but the power supply was still linear (using a transformer, big caps, and a rectifier). The Class-D amp modules had considerably better driver control and ran a lot cooler. There is much more physical content in these subs than in the SVS cubes, which use an IC-based Class-D.

Always my favorite items for reviee are subwoofers and headphones. 2 very important pieces of reference tools. I still have my BP 3000 TL towers from definitive technology 1996 they still work like the day they were purchased. To 18" subs, 1,500rms, 3,000 peak.. And the design of the transmission line boxes the bass is very low! 13hz. My home and studio is limestone walls and slate roof. It's like a cave. Perfect for isolation, cabin pressure. I have a Room in the basement that is all 1' thick concrete poured walls. I just now need a concrete or a very thick solid ceiling between the floor and the lowest level.
