DSSS (Digital Simulated Stereo System) switch - Operate this when inputting a monaural signal to enjoy a simulated stereo sound. You can use it when a monaural signal is input into both the left and right channels or when a monaural signal is input into only one of the channels.

I sold this receiver in the mid 90's at a big store (which no longer exists). The amp section was solid enough to drive Martin Logan Quest speakers, which we also sold. The Sony & Technics receivers we carried could not drive that speaker. This was a solid unit in its day.

Hey Zeos! I’m 55 years old and the second I saw this Pioneer I thought to myself “what the hell?” That was my first actual surround receiver! I know it inside out. It was a beast for its day. Still is! I had six Infinity infinitesimal speakers connected to it and used it for my surround sound receiver, multi channel stereo and occasionally for my headphones. I loved that Pioneer! It was made back in the day when 130wpc was a true 130wpc! It could drive any speaker of the day back then! Very cool review bro!

I remember when tech started to move toward more subtle, minimalistic design and liking it. Right now I've had enough of that painfully self conscious, bland design and want to see big ass tech with more of everything including bs features of dubious benefit. This amp is gorgeous.

DSSS stands for "Digital Simulated Stereo System." If you have a monaural source (like a 1940's 78 LP) and you have sonic input into both left and right channels,, DSSS can alter the monaural signal to simulate stereo.

These Pioneers are awesome! I currently own and daily use a VSX D409 handed down from my father along with a pair of Boston Acoustics CR7's and it hasn't failed me since. As of this moment I've upgraded to B&W CDM1's and Klipsch Kg3.2's (A and B speakers respectively) both speakers from the 90's and needed some work. With or without the SVS PB-1000, the experience is pure bliss. The power (100 watts a ch.)this pioneer receiver delivers is solid and cleaner than all others I've used (admittedly not many or as high of a power rating). I've even hooked the bulky and inefficient Realistics Mach 2's and they delivered the thunderous boom that the speakers are known for. Your review of your Pioneer VSX took me back to those years of all the fun I had experimenting with mine. Absolutely loving the vintage audio tech reviews and looking out for more!

When I was 22 years old in 1988 or whatever it was I bought this amplifier it's part of a high-end Pioneer system. Yes it was a lot of money for a 22 year old I was bartending in nightclubs & restaurants at the time and making great money it was awesome, the receiver was lost during a move, probably 30 years ago, I still have the matching Pioneer six pack CD player and high-end Pioneer tape deck and rest of the system which I dug out of a closet just last week they are in mint condition, haven't really been used in years. Fast forward roughly 35 years later I just got my hands on one of these last week for $200 at second hand store, was part of an estate sale, in absolutely mint pristine condition so now I have the stereo that I once had when I was 22 reunited. The remote control, controls the receiver of course but also the tape deck and the CD player, but I still have the individual remotes for those units as well, the tape deck can play tapes from both sides without turning the tape over. I haven't hooked up to some pretty killer speakers and the thing is loud, I mean freakin' loud! and powerful and clear and easily is 135 watts per Channel. What you really need to do is unplug those headphones and get yourself some really powerful tower speakers and take this thing for a test drive and do a video with that. Like the '80s Nike commercial says just do it, Pretty please, with sugar on top. 😜

I still run mine today, that I bought brand new at the base exchange in 1992. I spent an entire months pay (common for GIs), and a set of Klipsche Tangent 500s. That setup is still being play TO THIS DAY. Amazing amp. I also have a set of Adcom 555s, and still run the D1S. AMAZING receiver.

I own a Pioneer vsx D1S and 9900s model- both work great- basically identical performance. Currently have 9900s hooked up in stereo setup. These are very cool receivers for stereo use and sound very good, lots of power and cool looking display. Although, in today's used equipment/marketplace-I would recommend buying a excellent condition flagship/high end Yamaha or Denon AVR receiver (from 2002-2011 year era) such as a Yamaha rx z series or Denon 4800 or 5800 series. These can can be bought very cheaply on used market due to being obsolete technology. Almost 4 yrs ago For only 250$ I bought a Denon 4802r 7.1 receiver. For around same price as VSX D1S you get so much more for $- 7.1 surround sound dts + dolby digital etc. 7.1 surround sound is so much better than old school dolby pro logic, Night and day difference-not even comparable. There's Tons/infinite # of hook-ups/options possible w/ these units. The amp section and build quality is EASlLY as good as pioneer VSX D1S. Its subsantially larger and heavier than D1S. Just take a look at the massive torrodial power supply + caps in Denon 4802r model. lts Also built in Japan like D1S. Anyway, as COOL as vintage TOTL early 90s Pioneer receiver are...they simply can't compete against the later/next generation AVR receiver on used marketplace-for $. I keep my old pioneer's mainly for nostalgia factor

I absolutely love that style of screen, in the same way that I think the digital dashboard of a corolla 86 from back in the 80s is the coolest dashboard I've ever seen. They have that unique appeal of something belonging to a past future, which I know doesn't make much sense but it's the best way I can think of describing it. It's unique of their time.

Thanks for the review! First time I saw one was in a pro-audio speaker manufacturing shop. They were using that model in their lab. I thought then, if its good enough for pro-audio, it should be good enough for our humble listening room. Found a used one which had a slight hum on every inputs which a recapping job fixed. It's a beast and powers our B&O redline speakers. Its simply is phenomenal. The phono stage is awesome, too bad it wasn't reviewed there. Its many RCA video inputs makes it a dream receiver for original retro-gaming consoles, too!

Pioneer made their displays and front faces match all their gear and Laserdisc players. The units from this era are amazing deals. Manufacturers put a hell of a lot of gear into the early era units that were designed to work with Dolby Ac3 and later DTS and enthusiast’s Laserdisc setups. Despite most of the early units requiring six rca for demodulated ac3 instead of optical/coaxial these units are beautiful. I have a Yamaha top line model from 1994 and it’s still as good as it was then. And you can today get what you could never afford then for nothing!

I have that amp, it is a beast. You are going to make me pull it out. The amp would split the screen for two VCR inputs and you could use the jog wheel to clean up the picture while recording video. I remember the lights would dim a little when I turned it on. You could run multiple rooms with this. That is why you have multiple video and audio outputs. Pioneer sold an external box for multi room connections.

I use one of these to power AR 90 4 ohm speakers. It drives them with ease. Rated @ 130 wpc and 0.005 harmonic distortion, they routinely bench test @ 158 wpc. It has 5 amplifiers, one per channel. Put it in 2 channel stereo mode, push the "direct" button, and there is a separate amp to drive each speaker. Don't get the DX2. Pioneer cut corners internally on that one and it doesn't perform as well.

Had one very similar to this, was part of Pioneer’s Premier series. Used it with a set of full surround sound Harman kardon speakers plus had a Carver amp that ran 350 watts per channel which ran just a pair of infinity sm-152 tower speakers, each had a 1.5 inch poly cell super tweeter, 2 4.5 inch mid range speakers and a 15 inch woofer per speaker. Also had a cerwin Vega 15 inch powered subwoofer. You could shake the whole neighborhood with my system. During those years BIGGER was always better!! Miss those audio years and that equipment. I have to mention the multi center actually goes back to the reason why ToddAO and 70mm large format films were mixed for five channels across the screen. Not only would they do proper sound panning but the spatial sense was far better and more impactful than when the film sound became focused on a single center. This happened due to technical limitations when mixing Earthquake in Sensurround and then Dolby used this idea when developing their 70mm system (LCRS plus bass enhancement run through the now unused two extra screen channels of 70mm five screen channels). Then the LCRS was reused on their Dolby Stereo matrix system for standard 35mm and the idea stayed through the birth of 5.1 and remains in place to this day.

AV receivers in general are pretty under rated with most Audiophiles. My dad had Marantz RS-3559, he bought it new in 1991 it was 1000 dollar receiver back then. The harmonic distortion was good for time, it was 0.02%. My dad let me have it years later after he replaced it with a Marrantz SR 7000. I grew up Marantz AV receivers in my living room they have special place in my heart. I still have the Marantz RS 3559 in my basement, I haven't switched that thing on 10 years.

I think the control in / out is like a data hookup for remote control with other pioneer equipment. Like the remote might have had a play pause ff rw for a vcr (or more likely being pioneer, a laserdisk), and you had to wire it because it was before they came up with learning remotes and all that jazz. My JVC stuff I had did this but they called it COMPU LINK so it was instantly way cooler.

I've owned one since it came out. LOVE IT. After some 30 years, I finally had a cap leak, slight buzz at low volume. It's being recapped as we speak. (Just bought a second one almost like new for $150. Katching!!!) You know, in life, every manufacturer makes a good mistake, the VSX-D1S is one of them. I also own a VSX56-TXi (ELITE) and in side by side comparisons, on a pair of B&W DM2-MKII at the same listening level, the D1S is more musical. LMAO. The phono input is way over this unit's price tag. The split screen option had an Image Enhancer, on the left is the original image, on the right the 'tuned' one (using the JOG dial). It works! That was an ELITE model, with almost everything thrown into it, disguised as a regular Pioneer receiver. Also one of the first receivers to truly have 5 channels. Most others of that period used 4 channels. Left/right/center/rear (split into 2 speakers). If you do the white noise level test, you can hear the rear left and right come on separately. Sweet! And ALL of the functions, can be controlled directly on the unit!!! Try that today....LMAO You'll notice in the back EVERY channel has a PRE-OUT!!! You can use this unit as a higher end Pre-Amp!!! For its time, it was a beast!!! OH, and make no mistake, ALL I said about the D1S DOES NOT APPLY to the D2S, D3S, those were the regular stuff. Damn! I love old school!!! Great review bud!!! Cheers

I’d love a video on the Mark Levinson No. 335. Construction, Layout and part quality unsurpassed by any amp to this date, no matter the price. Uses DALE resistors (over one dollar a piece), giant (0.05+ Farad) caps, and zink-plated copper rails as signal transport. Same goes for the 23(.5), 27(.5), 331, 332(.5) and 334.

I had the VSX D3s it was a great little unit. I purchased mine in 95 when it just came out. Also had a pioneer VSX AX10aig which was a 32kg beast and king in its day. No HDMI in them days. The AX10 was a statement piece. From that I went to a denon Avpa1hd paired with a poaa1hd 10 channel amp which weighed 67kg a true monster.

Headphone out is probably driven directly from the driver transistors. The ones right before the output transistors. Thats why it sounds great. Thats the way my sx-1050 does too. They are plenty powerful, ive seen the same ones used as outputs on a 20 watt receiver

I bought one of these brand new when it first came out, I actually took out a small bank loan to buy it. These things are tanks, I've been using it ever since I bought it over 30 years ago and paired it with 2 huge Infinity Kappa speakers and then for surround sound, an Infinity Kappa center channel and some Harmon Kardon rear speakers.

I have the model that was right below this in Pioneer's line-up, the VSX-D901S, and I love it! It's a little less fancy and a little less powerful than the D1S, but it's still damn good. The D901S went for $1,140 back in 1991, so the $1,200 mark is probably right for the D1S.

Cool, I have a great VSX-4000. I still have that remote, and yes its ugly...Its loaded with esoteric extras galore, the amber display, eq meter, recording level adjustment, and inputs that are dizzying...and the headphone, whatever, is next level loud. You could fabricate two 12" woofers into headphones and implode your head off! luv the 90s gear when it comes to Pioneer...badass review Z!

I have one running my D9's for my 800 compact disc collection , yes I'm old and had a pioneer elite A20 at one time running my D9's but at 50W a ch it sucked. I then bought a vintage Cerwin Vega power amp and that was ok until I heard about this VSX-D1S as a sleeper unit. I found one for sale at $120 and grabbed it asap. original owner in his 70s lol , anyways he had it in a box since early 2000 because he couldn't move the thing around when wife always had to remodel and crap he said , basically he didn't use it and I gained a beautiful piece of audio gear for my cd stereo. its a beast pushing my D9's and love to feel my music and nothing is more better than the pre - outputs if I ever wanted to add more speakers . Anyways I'm happy you made this video , it shows class in how certain people still exist in taking the time to share .

Hello Zeos I'm a big fan of your videos very unique and love your spin on presentation. I just acquired D1S in excellent cosmetic and working condition. I noticed the relays kick in 2 minutes after it's powered on. Wondering if you have a similar issue. I do have a computer fan on top since they do run hot. Keep up the good work.

Just dug mine out of the closet(after 21 years). Bought while stationed in Japan at the Pony store in Fussa City. Loved it then, now I want to use it again along with all the other Pioneer gear that goes along with it. Now I need new speakers as my old Infinity SM-152’s died years ago! Any ideas?.. P.S. I have all the gear, remote, multi room units etc!

I'm a little shocked that there haven't been dozens of replies regarding your comment about power output of this receiver and no speakers that needed the "wattage" that this behemoth put out. I sold this unit in the 90's along with Denon, Sony and Technics. I also sold the Nautilus and DM series from B&W and the newer L series from JBL. To be honest, all of those could more than handle this receiver and most people bought surround sound or Pro Logic receivers were putting together 5.1 systems, not the guy who had Citation II amps with thousands of dollars in cables running across his living room. This was a fine receiver and we always regarded the surround decoding from Pioneer to be better than the other receivers we sold , but Denon had the best audio quality than anything else we sold. Besides all that, nice vintage piece.

@@ZReviews A few years back I found that my AV receiver was sadly lacking in the music side of it's ability compared to my main listening system. So did some research and found Pioneer VSX-D1s. I'm not sure if Pioneer thought that they needed to come in to the AV receiver market but was still in the music side of the business, either way doesn't matter to me cause these are one hell of a unit! I found one and was absolutely blown away and as luck would have it another popped up in my local market so I snatched it up.

nice amp, makes me miss the onkyo R1 integra, tho my "modern" amp is an 06 vx-1700, just barely has hdmi but is used for PC stereo and is super low distortion. the only thing you "pay for" that amps really shine is power and that super clean low distortion sound that will sound great straight in from DAC

Check the impedance across that impedance switch. It might need dismantling and cleaning. I use 2400 grit or higher to gently polish up the contacts. Is there an European model number for these? Can't find any for sale in Europe.
