So much better than most reviewers. Asus does need to start sending you their machines. I have gotten the G14 2022 Eclipse Gray version and its very good for its size. Just like the guy in the video talking about the difference between heat and temperature, the temperature is high on the cpu but it doesn't really feel that hot itself because of its design of having fans blow out the air from the bottom to the back of the laptop and also keeping the wasd keys very cool even if its on 90*C on cpu temp. I like to game on manual mode with 100% fan speeds on 85*C - 100*C 75% fan speed on 70*C - 85*C and so on and so on. I keep the fan speeds high because I usually wear headphones so I can't even hear the fan noise in my room.

I wanted to be able to power it in my truck without as giant brick, & be able to charge it off my 65w car charger the way my wife does with her M1 MacBook Air. I also wanted to not feel like it's a hassle to set up, the way my old Asus 17" is. I had to run it with a cooling pad & exhaust vent even after repasting with liquid metal. Now, with the G14, even my iGPU in the CPU is more powerful than my gigantic 2015 laptop with a useless battery. I'm so happy with this decision so far.

Thanks. I really liked the deep dive perspective of testing different power inputs and the results. I havent seen any other YT reviewers approach this way. A lot just talk about design, test lids, sound quality ect. Most dont care about that using gaming laptop. We use headphones anyway while gaming and all it matters is performance while gaming and while just browsing using YT. Battery life and heat is that matters most. Even in ultra thin laptops its important. I already ordered G14 6700S version today before seeing this video, but i got same info about performance while using battery or usb-c from other YT video test. I've also noticed boot times can be a little long... it seems like sometimes it is trying to train the memory before booting... sometimes you just have to wait for 60 seconds at a time for it to finish and then start booting. I have heard that this device has PCIe4... however I'd recommend looking at something like a SK Hynix Gold P31 m.2, as they have shown to be extremely power efficient for laptop battery life while providing great levels of performance as well.

You actually sacrifice battery's longevity using usb-c as your primary source to charge. I knew this because I have been using g14 2022 as my primary pc in the past year and I switched to usb-c power for a while. The problem is from Asus. When the laptop is powered by the AC adapter, after the laptop is fully charged, it will stop charging (only trickle charge) the battery and directly power the system. However if you are charging from usb-c, it will constantly charge your battery and your system will be constantly drawing power from your battery.

Excellent information! Exactly what I wanted to see what would happen if we dial down the TDP a bit. That balanced 100W seem like a good way to get most of the performance while being thermally acceptable. Quite fascinating that it is basically able to pull 2021 model's numbers while using 75W CPU / GPU combined. With this info, keeping that 240W brick 24/7 at home and just lugging around smaller USB-C charger doesn't seem like a bad idea either, since you are getting 86% of performance and it will lighten up the total package (laptop + power brick) quite a bit. ETA - how is the fan noise at either 100W or 75W? I'm assuming at 75W it would be very compliant?

DO NOT USE THE 100W CHARGER FOR GAMING. That 100W charger is good for light productivity but for gaming is a terrible idea. The reason why the 100W charger doesn't even allow Turbo mode is because it is too weak and if you game with it unlike the 240W charger which the laptop will use directly for gaming, the 100W charger is too weak which makes it so that the battery is used for gaming while the charging is charging the battery. This can lead to a loop of charge and discharge which significantly degrades Lithium Ion batteries and worsens its lifespan. If u want to game, use the 240W charger or go on battery only.

Love to see claims backed up by data to sort out true and false. Seems that AMD has produced some excellent mobile silicon and Asus has done an excellent job balancing the performance and efficiency with this years design. Sure the package temps are higher but capabilities justify that. So I was surprised to find actual heat output from the fans was not as extreme as some were making it out to be. I have the 2020 G14 and it crashed CONSTANTLY, ran HOT AS HELL and the performance was awful when playing AAA games compared to things like DOTA and more well-optimized games with less effects, draw distance, detail, etc. Apparently on G14 AMD versions, the CPU boost mode is constantly active and cannot be disabled in ARMORY or regular Windows 11 settings. By toggling a register value and some advanced power options the computer no longer crashes (at least not yet), it stays under 80C pretty much all the time, and it runs BETTER than before on AAA high-fidelity games like Baldur's Gate 3 (since performance is no longer throttled due to the CPU being almost on fire). Now I game without boost at all, "silent" fan-spec, low power draw and it works fantastically compared to before. For anyone else who as the same problem on G14 AMD, 2020 version or something else, here is the video that seems to have fixed my PC: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKOzk5d7o7J7Y6M

It's on the biggest sale I've seen so far at best buy. $350 off plus they have open box for about $1,000. First thing I did was put my hand on the top and bottom and it was very very warm perhaps you could call it hot. It didn't seem like anything was running. I checked what tasks were running and some Xbox task was using 10% of the CPU roughly. I killed that task but the laptop didn't seem the cool down. I put my ear up to the laptop and did not hear the fans running at all... but the room was noisy. Also did not feel any hot air coming out of any of the vents and the bottom of the display was not hot at all.... I tried to force the fans on but the armor crate wasn't installed apparently but I didn't have permission to install it so I gave up and went home. I'm a bit confused though because actually I think I was in armor crate at one point but it wouldn't give me permission to go into one menu of settings - but another time it gave me an error message, said armor crate might not be installed correctly. But either way I tried everything but could not get into the fan settings. I'm leaning towards buying an Apple Mac Air or the next version of the iPad mini since it'll be perfect for my drone. I could buy the 16 GB version (and also 512 GB SSD) Mac Air for about 1500. Not exactly cheap but it would be silent yet very fast...and not burn me...

The issue with temperature isn't that it's making your room hot or the chassis hot. It's that higher temps are bad for long term stability and health of the core. This is straight up mental gymnastics.
@cbutters2 жыл бұрын
If the temperature was too high for the chip; AMD would not let the chip reach that temperature. It is within spec and validated to operate stably by AMD, you realize they can tune that easily right?; so where is the problem? Not to mention you can easily reduce temps by limiting it by temperature or tdp using AMD tools, armory crate or ryzenadj with little hit to performance.
@enmass902 жыл бұрын
@@cbutters AMD doesn't have anything to do with it. The only thing they tune is the TJmax threshold. If the chip crosses the thermal threshold the chip throttles to stay under it. It's up to the laptop manufacturers to design a cooling solution and tune to chip to the limitations of that cooling solution. In this case they are allowing the chip to run all the way to the limit in order to extract the most performance out of it. It might be fine in the short term but it'll degrade in the long term. How far is that long term is anyone's guess. But that's why reviewers are saying that this laptop runs hotter than it did last year. Because it objectively does. More advanced lithography requires more advanced cooling solutions and methodical tuning so it stays in a comfortable thermal range. Watching a CPU hit consistently hit over 90c is not a good feeling and was one of the biggest criticisms against Macbooks over the last 5 years.
@cbutters2 жыл бұрын
@@enmass90 AMD has nothing to do with it huh.. except you go on to say that they have everything to do with it... AMD sets the max operating temperature for the chip just like you and I have both said. Read this page: www.amd.com/en/products/apu/amd-ryzen-9-6900hs. You're right ASUS has decided to give it as much power as it wants until it hits that 90 operating temp (still 5 degrees below TJmax btw) Would you rather they leave performance on the table? or give you max performance and let you tune it lower if you want lower operating temps? Not to mention you can tune this thing to stay at 75 C and STILL get better performance than last gen. I guess I still don't understand your beef? You're mad that the machine operates within the full range of its specification and also gives you easy to use user controls that let you tune it back if you have a power consumption or temperature preference.... what is the problem here? It isn't OVERHEATING... it is operating as designed.
@enmass902 жыл бұрын
@@cbutters No they have nothing to do w/ the design of the cooling solution used for this laptop. If it was safe to peg the CPU near TJmax then laptops with adequately engineered cooling solutions wouldn't exist. It isn't necessary to run the CPU near the limit to extract all of its performance. All that's required is proper cooling. You're acting like other laptop manufacturers don't design laptops that don't hit 90c. Last year's model did not behave like this. Which is why reviewers are saying that it runs hotter. Especially the 6800s version with the higher wattage gpu.

Thank you! I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about it getting so hot that it’s shutting off. Also that the wrist area gets uncomfortably hot. Any ideas why. I already bought the laptop and I’m pumped and I don’t foresee me playing demanding games ( I have Xbox ) I’d only use this for school and like Minecraft and indie games

It's because Ryzen CPU has boost enabled by default. When I disable boost on my ryzen desktop CPUs, I get way better heat management. Did you try this on laptop? Lock the CPU to 4.6 ghz and no boost in BIOS.

Any concerns about battery longevity when gaming on PD? It certainly seems smart enough to only use what’s available so it doesn’t tap much into the battery but I figured I’d ask.

Is there a usb c charging bypass for direct powering of the device? Or it's only software configuration that it gives more power by usb than just battery? 2021 and 2020 models were battery drainers while usb c plugged. It gave battery wear because of continuouse charge-discharge loop

Question: when they say the temps "are within spec", does this mean that the temps are safe only for the moment? In other words, if 96C is still within spec for the CPU, does that mean it's also safe for the long-term? By long-term, I mean 2 years minimum.

Hey, I wanted to ask about the WiFi card. Is it as bad of an issue as people say? I see many people swap their mediatek out for Intel because it stopped working so I want to know if I should be aware of this issue.

Hi , sorry if I missed it but I’ve been listening to your video on this and the X13 about 3 times now but with the G14 did you use the 100w USB C from your other ASUS laptops? Would it play nice with an aftermarket one as I saw they are pricey for the OEM 100w ASUs PSU. Don’t think they would make it detect other PSU and reduce performance Vs thier own but it’s an expensive buy if it’s another PSU at 2-3 times the price from ASUS Vs maybe Anker or others well known brand PD charger makers
@cbutters2 жыл бұрын
G14 I think works with any 100W charger at full 100W. it is the X13 / Z13 that only pull 65 instead of 100W if you don't use the official charger.

I’ve got some concerns with this laptop. I purchased one early this week and immediately replaced the existing ssd with a 2tb one that came out of my desktop, which this laptop is replacing. After a few blue screens I decided to do a fresh install of windows from a usb installer. After that I went to the G14s drivers and bios page and installed it all. Followed by updating all other drivers. But I was a little disappointed with performance. I do realize that it won’t meet my (now sold) Ryzen 7 5800x, RTX 2070 desktop, but I do notice that the gpu power draw hardly ever goes above 45w and never over 60w. I can’t help but wonder if I did something wrong or maybe I’m just missing a setting. I’ve tried manually changing the cpu power draw in armory crate (which works), but despite limiting cpu to 25w. It’s still only reaching that 45w-60w mark. Doesn’t matter if it’s plugged in with the barrel plug, usb C, or on battery. Any advice?
@sergiosaenz31502 жыл бұрын
An example I can give in gaming performance is that I can’t go above ~130fps in Rainbow Six Siege at 1080p, no matter what the graphics settings are, or the armory crate settings when my desktop reached 340+.

@@bamboo6044 I also realized that setting the games from windowed borderless to full screen gave a 50% or more increase in performance. I can only assume it’s a driver bug and might be fixed by now. Haven’t retested.

Thank you for this perspective. I do think these little babies run hot and am trying to level with that being ok. I have the 144hz screen version and am very impressed with performance but it scares me when I see my GPU temp at 92 degrees during timespy. I hate the windows high performance profile and I wish the armour crate presets didn't default it to on in performance and turbo modes. Am I missing something? Why would Asus see this as beneficial?
@mukundajohnson16892 жыл бұрын
I just got one and the edges of the chassis were getting warm just going through the windows installer, so... I think it could use better heat management or power optimization, especially if it's nearly idle. I also had to return it because the touchpad didn't work at all.
@mukundajohnson16892 жыл бұрын
That said, it's probably impossible to get what I want in a laptop: Strong CPU, Medium GPU, 1080p screen. OK for light gaming, optimal heat, and great for business. G14 looked close to that with the 1440p / 120hz screen and decent CPU. GPU was just a bit much imo.

I just received my Zephyrus and am very intrigued about how you pulled the power back from 115W down to 100W. The power supply is a 240W, so is the 115W to 100W referring only to the CPU? What settings in the laptop do you change to reduce by the 15W? Based on your chart it doesn't look like there is any need to run higher than 100W. Thanks.

I just got this laptop around christmas and to be quite honest it gets scolding hot when running WoW Dragonflight on Ultra. I'm getting the performance just not the cooling and its become aggravating. I will say I changed the registry codes as shown in other youtube videos and that reduces my cpu and gpu temps by a large margin but the laptop just gets wayy to hot. And yes I've bought a laptop cooling pad that has helped but not in the way that you would imagine. Can I get some help?
