Great shows, amazing solos from Jimmy; he was more charismatic in ‘98 than in ‘95, where Robert stole the show. After all these years, they are both still in the top 10 best concerts I ever attended. The fans did notice the stagnant setlist. Michael Lee was asked in Cleveland by a fan, while he out and about the town, if the band planned to change the set at all. He laughed and said he doubted it but that it wasn't up to him. There was a strange feeling to the tour, Jimmy and Robert were moving in different directions. They had talked about doing another Japan tour, but that's about as far as it got. After Paris it came to an end and Robert went back to make a solo albums and wander the UK as Priory of Brion. Jimmy eventually went to hire the Black Crowes to do another trip around the US. How Many More Times was the highlight for me in the 4 shows I saw. But it was over, the Unledded magic was gone. Good video.
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Жыл бұрын
So fans did notice eh? Yeah i mean it's not a bad set list but pales in comparison to 1996 South America for example. We can't confirm this, but i think something was up with Jimmy's personal lifestyle choices, he didn't look well. The major overhaul he went thru in 2005-2007 speaks volumes of how he got his Health back on track. The whole 1998-2000 period, the man seems lost. Walking into Clarksdale's eerie vibes translated into a strange tour, the album cover is Disturbing as hell. Thank you very much for watching, stay tuned for episode 18!

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-StoriesThe 1996 Japan tour was great too, they did a lot of oddball songs there (as they did with Zeppelin). About the only thing in setlist that changed much in 1998 was which WiC song(s) they decided to play and what Robert improvised in the breakdown section of HMMT. It may not be obvious from the videos but Jimmy had something wrong. He drooled all the time on stage. Not just a little either, A LOT! You may be right about Jimmy's problems though nobody has ever said what he was doing behind the scenes. Those who ran into him when he was out and about said he seemed fine and not lost in substance abouse so I don't know what was going on. I'd love to see you cover the Priory of Brion year(s). I collected a number of tour recordings when it was happening. They are intesting and you can tell Robert was having fun not playing stadiums.

I caught this tour in Minneapolis, and it was the best I've ever seen Page. It was cool to hear the deep cuts and the show rocked so hard it felt like a train that was about to derail, but somehow managed to stay on the tracks. The concert was at the Target Center which is our Timberwolves basketball arena. One of our University of Minnesota sports teams was in the play-offs and Plant noticed the game was on in one of the suites. He sounded seriously annoyed as he said: "There are people watching TV at my gig?" To me, he didn't sound disengaged, and his anger just added to his performance. Four inebriated guys were in the row in front of my wife and I and one guy passed out before the show began. He ended up on the cement floor around his friends' feet and didn't wake up until the lights were back on and everyone was shuffling out. I wonder if this guy ever bragged about seeing Page and Plant in concert. Either the day of this show, or the day before (?) Plant dropped into The Uptown Bar which was a legendary live music dive bar here in Minneapolis. Jeff Buckley, Nirvana, Soundgarden, The Replacements, Husker Du, Babes in Toyland and hundreds of other indie bands played the Uptown over the years. The cool thing about the afternoon Plant walked in was that the staff and the bar flies recognized him but didn't bother him. They let him enjoy his pint without asking for autographs.

Man, so many details in your recollection, love it. Poor guy passing out at the show, most likely he Brags all the time about this show lol. So you saw the gig on June 12, 1998 - Target Center, Minneapolis. Man the Timbervolves where a great team, specially the 1994 with Rider. Plant is famous for walking into bars i've heard, he even came to my country many times....allegedly he was a bar i couldn't possibly imagine how no one asked him for autographs. Glad you enjoyed a killer show that night. I saw they did "Shining in the Light", "Heart in Hand", "Walking into Clarksdale" and "Most High" from Clarksdale , SWEET. I saw shows at the very beginning and end of that mammoth Page/Plant tour. Their 11th show in 1995 with the orchestra was great. When I saw them a second time in '98 they only had a few shows left before the long tour finally ended. By contrast I preferred P/P later on in '98 as a quartet. Unrestrained by an orchestra, they simply rocked harder. After their Unledded MTV special aired only once it went on sale as a dvd called No Quarter. An interviewer asked John Paul Jones at the time "What do you think of No Quarter?" and Jones said, "It's one of my best songs."
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Жыл бұрын

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories 'Preciate the reply. To answer your question: the orchestra blended fine, laid out when appropriate, and Porl on second guitar added authenticity to Zep tunes because he played various guitar overdubs Page couldn't with just two hands. It also appears that she only played 2 concerts in her entire career, and the Page-Plant show at MSG was her last of the 2. I was wondering how they found her, and this makes it seem even more amazing that they did. She played with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at age 15! I saw them at the Alamodome in San Antonio in September of that year. The tickets were a birthday present from my best friend (also a huge Led Zeppelin fan), and he came with me and the girl who would become my ex-wife. There isn't a whole lot that really stands out from the show to me other than the excitement of me finally getting the closest I would ever get to seeing Led Zeppelin play live. The one big thing that did stand out was that the Zeppelin songs always got a strong reaction from the audience whereas the Walking into Clarksdale songs were met either with ambivalence or confusion. Still, though, it was a great show, and I'd probably give my right arm in order to go back and experience it again. Anways, great episode as always, and looking forward to JPJ finally getting his due in the next episode!

How Many (more) Times have I said it?... thanks again, JCM! You've created a true masterpiece here. Provided an invaluable service, in my opinion. As I watched this episode, I felt a sense of sadness, for the realization that the Plant part of the Zeppelin legacy had pretty much reached its end. You mentioned you had more episodes to come, (Jones and Page with Foo Fighters being one), but to me, Plant is, has been, and always will be, so much the integral piece of the Zeppelin puzzle, (Page as well, of course. Bonham, and Jonesy, too); but without Robert, it's just not Led Zeppelin. I have to say, though, that between yours and Mark Zep's vast array of videos, I feel a sense of wholeness now. Like a great void has been filled. A sense that I've journeyed through the entire landscape of Led Zeppelin videos, sounds and footage, almost greater than any true fan of the band could ever hope to explore; and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for providing us, the KZbin viewer/world, with something I will take with me for the rest of my life. You're an inspiration to us all, JCM; for you set out with a vision, and damn if you didn't achieve it! So let me just say it this one last time, in a way that I know you can appreciate: "Baah bah baah bah baah baah, ... oh!.. I wanna Thank You." ("shredding guitar solo")

Him out of the picture feels strange, like 1986-1987 when he didn't tour. Glad the void has been filled. The idea is to have the story now for the ages, both 1980s and 1990s covered. I will continue with the Zepp albums and other subjects i find, maybe by other bands! I am comitted to creating this library into 100 videos at least :) And also, this works as a living resume for a potential Job Offer into media creation and content management, we will see what happens! Such a good episode JCM, your inclusion of the interviews nails the colour's to the mast. I saw the Reading show, Jimmy gave it his all, his black boot polish short hair et al. Planty, went through the motions a bit, I think he struggled to get there on certain numbers, The Wanton Song always gave him problems. Back in the day Led Zeppelin was an extravagant show, the music was only part of it. As the interviewer asked is this a promotion? Plant took it personally as a dig. Plant and Page was good but little more than a tribute to what had gone before. Bands like Iron Maiden, turned their legacy into a business developing it to continue. Page and Plant went into a Cul de Sac. Robert acknowledged that. Without him Jimmy had nowhere to go, which was a shame. At least it gave him time to remaster some more cut tracks. This series gets better and better. Bravo JCM

Hey, my good friend, thanks so much for another wonderful episode! ❤ your devotion and attention to detail are second to none. So here's a few interesting thoughts and memories, very keen to see what you think. Oh yes before I forget, the Come with me episode was super as well, which kinda leads me to one of my theories that contributed to the split in 98.......did Robert consider the use of Kashmir as the basis for Come with me to be very upsetting, especially with Jimmy openly endorsing it? We know that all of them consider Kashmir a significant milestone which it absolutely is; was it a step too far? Just a theory? Okay the other points, before I forget them! 1. I saw both Wembley arena gigs in 1998. The 2nd night was considerably better in terms of energy. The first night was great, don't get me wrong, but they were in safe mode.....I know you will understand this as a fellow guitarist; I would have nights when I was tired and not feeling great so I decided being adventurous would not be a good idea! 2. Jimmy's guitar tone was hugely better on this tour, much more than during Unledded. He was also consistently playing like a demon. Sounds like he was primarily using a Vox? 3. Most High was superb live. 4. I only found out recently that Michael Lee suffered with epilepsy and bearing in mind how fierce he was behind the kit, I wonder how on earth he managed to cope? A remarkable testament to his stamina and skill. 5. On the subject of his drumming I am so delighted you played the clip from the University College London gig because it captures the sound quality and energy perfectly, and the closing Rock and Roll has to be one of the best ever performances. Phew! I think I remembered everything! Thanks so much as always 😊 sending you peace and Love ❤
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Жыл бұрын
Your Kashmir theory is possible but because tour rehearsals began in January really and Page recorded Come With Me in February i can think of the song not being chosen because the Unledded Egyptian Ensemble was gone. I don't picture Robert wanting to go back to the original....which don't get me wrong, i love, but the 1994 version elevated to a higher place. Now on your 5 points, you're right on "SAFE MODE", the fact they chose the same openers from Unledded was dissapointing. Jimmy used Fender Amps for this, now this model in particular has a good warming sound but he did use the VOX on Clarksdale which makes me believe a spare amp was added there. Poor Michael Lee, i think he was only happy on the stage. The University College gig in London rocks, they sound relaxed and took more chances at the sound itself i believe! Thank you very much for watching, stay tuned for episode 18!

Just put Jason on the drums and get (f)uckin(g) busy. I've seen Robert Plant twice solo. Saw That 98 tour in Indianapolis. Really good. Never saw the Firm or Coverdale-Page or Page with the Black Crows. Page will be 81 in February, I think. Plant 76, maybe? You don't have to do a 200 city world tour. Just do what you can stand physically. Every time they ask Plant, it's almost like he is embarrassed to have been in Zeppelin or something. I like his solo stuff and the Allison Krauss stuff, but it's nothing so great he can't put it aside and give people what they really want. A Zeppelin reunion. It made him rich beyond belief and yet he acts sometimes so weird about it.

Also remember Page and Plant 90s made many people rich...from techs to management, everybody got paid. What Plant changed after 2002 was this very nature of his entourage. He did evolve, i understand why he doesn't wanna do it, the 1990s version of him on the other hand, was running away from the past in ways that are quite Strange. This joint venture might have been a springboard for Jimmy to relaunch his solo career. The breakup of Page & Plant might have been known even before the making of Walking Into Clarksdale, and the album might have been released because of a contract commitment back in '93-'94.

You're right, there where extra tour dates that never happened. It makes you wonder if there was previous stuff going down. Now, the contract itself, you mean with Atlantic? Could they possibly signed a 2 album deal? I would think they'd expect a 5 album deal at least, but it is a good theory!
@freedmarine Жыл бұрын
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Before viewing your series, I thought Page & Plant were more 50/50. The 95-96 tour was Robert's thing, and '98 was Jimmy's turn. I would theorize a contract was made formally or informally between Jimmy and Robert. Like Jimmy said, "Okay, I'll do your Egyptian thing, but on the next tour we do it like the old days." But as you mentioned in your video, the Remasters' sales and the '95 tour expense probably dictated that decision.
@freedmarine Жыл бұрын
Around the mid-80s, I would assume the mainstream thought of Led Zeppelin was like that Record Store owner who quipped at you for buying ITTOD, "How does it feel to have bad taste?". Robert departed drastically from LZ's sound was a business decision to stay in fashion, but when trying to just keep up with the trend you wind up with Shaken 'N Stirred.
@freedmarine Жыл бұрын
I don't believe Jimmy would ever say this, but I believe he thinks Robert's 80s work is too trendy when Led Zep in the 70s set the trends. And when Shaken 'N Stirred bombed, it must have pumped up Jimmy to get back to work. Like Jimmy knew that people like that record store owner didn't know Jack about music and Robert is a moron for trying to please people like that.
@freedmarine Жыл бұрын
You can say about Jimmy's solo career kind of started and stopped with Outrider. Even though Phil Collins was a major influence and selling point for the first albums, Robert's solo career ends with Shaken N' Stirred. After that bombs his career turns into Led Zeppelin reunion teases with another bomb with Fate of Nations in the middle of that. Robert's solo career doesn't really recover until Priory Brion and the Strange Sensation. I would argue the truest sound of Robert Plant is "Fate of the Nations" and everything after "Dreamland" and without a doubt his best work Post-Zeppelin.

22:24. I can see exactly what Robert is talking about when he calls himself a wedding singer. He's doing a great job of entertaining, but it's a routine. I don't blame him for not wanting to keep doing the "baby baby" routine. Imagine talking to your parents when they're 80 years old but you're trying to pretend you're still 15 and they're still in their 40s. Everybody's changed and moved on. But then someone pays you to act that way. So you give it a shot and ticket sales boom. You're now a wedding singer doing the routine. You're not that age anymore, but apparently few care who you are now. Just keep acting 15. That's the schtick. I'd also rather not act like I did as a teen or early 20's.

You know when i see my musician buddies who play weddings and all that...i see the sub text of it. BUT...as far as his live playing, do you think he used backing tracks or a rhythm player behind the stage? I don't because in 1977 he had a VERY tight rhythm guitar work but his lead playing was messy so...i think it's just nerves or the aftermath of H. We do know Come With Me had Tom Morello doing most of the guitar and bass stuff. His 1998 - 2000 playing was coming back to greatness but i did hear some of the Black Crowes stuff to have some weird Leads compared to the always precise Page Plant...so maybe you are onto something :)

As soon as it became Page/ Plant without Jones and Jason I had no interest and it did sound very much like zep karaoke. I’m a huge Zeppelin fan and over the years it seems to me that Plant see’s zeppelin as Jimmy’s more than anyone else’s and I’m thinking that denying him a reunion gives his ego a boost.
