This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

man that was the scariest april fools day prank of all agad. youre videos have been the voice through a lot of troubles in my life. from my dad leaving, to my college roommate commiting suicide, through sleepless nights, your ever-energetic charisma somehow kept me on a good track. i was able to improve from about 1100s to about 1700s elo in Lichess and if i could do that, i felt like i could get through evrything one move at a time. thank you agad. i know its not anything special to rreach the 1700s but for someone ike me who had no way to feel good about myself, small successes like that have given me the confidence to hit the grind everyday. your videos gave me something to forget about everything else an enjoy something unabashedly . thank you agadmator.

You can tell that morphy must of gained respect or reputation in this series vs Paulsen .. Morphys calculated arrogance, is so astoundingly beautiful.. ... I could just imagine... morphy walking the crowded streets and a little news paper boy yelling "morphy beats Paulsen, game 7 soon, Read all about it".. And someone looks at morphy and recognizes him and everyone is so ecstatic because they got to meet someone famous.. And I bet morphy in that moment realized how greatly .. he was revolutionizing the game and popularity of chess and he felt the void in his heart from not being loved as a child get filled .. And he must of been filled will hunger and purpose ..

The move that he missed that could have drawn the game where you capture the pawn with the rook and check the white king actually seems pretty obvious it’s the kind of thing I would even playing in a rapid game I’m surprised he missed that. checking the opponents king to get out of a difficult situation can often allow you to open up other moves and continue on with different combinations. It’s often an instinctive response when you’re in trouble

What is really weird is how Paulsen didnt play 23 ...Rxe4+ which even a relatively weak player would have found it as it is a check and after 24 Kf2 Ne7 25 Kf3 f5 everything is rock solid. Especially as he missed b5 earlier the only explanation I can see is that he is starting to suffer having to play against such a tough opponent.

On 3:00, instead of g3, White should have opted for Qg4; both attacking the Bf4 as well as g7 to capture RH8. If ... Bh6, Nc7 rakes the King & Rook. If ... Be5, just thrust f4. If Bxf4, then Qxg7. The loss of material would be too much for Black to continue. 1-0

1.Ndb5, Qb4 2. Bd2, Qa5 3. Nd5, Qa6, 4 Nc7, that's probably the longest line where you can keep the queen on board, Queen for a rook and a piece was the best option there Sacrificing the bishop will lead to even worst position because the knight on b5 has so many threat.

Agadmator enjoy the content it’s always good and very well done for the April fools show. I was wondering not being a high ranked player in any way but after the knight to b5 move can’t the queen go to b4 than to a5 and find a way out from there? Not sure what I’m missing and don’t know where a move like that might lead but seems to me queen could of been saved and a completely different game could of been played. Thanks for the channel you do a great job.

Paulson is going for the Paulson's variation but Morphy never seemed to play the Morphy's defense so far. Really weird!

01:06 Your dog is shaking at the sight of black's position 02:42 After black plays Qxb1, can white play Nd6+, then Nxb1, just misplacing the King first, so then black cannot castle? 07:10 Nice way to draw the game: Fortress idea.

Agadmator, I would love it if you could do a commentary on the games played by the mechanical Turk. I believe that a few of them were recorded. Just how good were they in a modern context?

After Paulsen takes the poison pawn with his queen is it really trapped ? Can't the queen move to b4 and when threatened by the rook move the queen to a5 ? What am I missing here ??

At the 3:35 mark, N-d6 which does more than hinder Black's development. If K-d8, Nxf7, winning the rook.
