This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

Operator: "911 WHAT'S THE EMERGENCY??" Agad: "HELLO EVERYONE! I wish to report a pickpocket. I just saw a man robbing a woman's purse." Operator: "Can you describe the aggressor and the victim?" Agad: "She is white and the hoodie guy is black. So, in honor of the hoodie guy I am wearing a hoodie..." Operator: "Is anyone harmed or needs medical attention??" Agad: "No. Black started the attack right away but white decided to completely disregard this. Which is a weird move, but ok." Operator: "Were there any other witnesses?" Agad: "No but luckily I had my camera on me, so as soon as I saw the incident I just started taking as many photos as possible as evidence. It was captures, captures, captures... Quite amazing stuff. I will be telling this to my friends at the bar and the library." Operator: "That's good. Anything else that might help us identify the aggressor?" Agad: "There's also CCTV cameras around here that probably filmed the incident. So, feel free to pause the video and try to identify the thief while I give you a couple of seconds... So, if you were able to do it, congratulations on being an excellent criminal finder, and for those who are here just to enjoy the show, the criminal is..." Operator: "Thank you for your call sir. Our officers are on the way." Agad: "Soyea. I really hope you enjoyed that. Have a nice rest of your friday and I'll see you soon."

I am so glad that he won a memorable game, Löwenthal was a great player in his own right and its sad that we usually only see his defeats by Morphy. I found this on Wiki: 'No doubt aware that chess was Löwenthal's only source of livelihood, and conscious to not be considered a professional player himself, Morphy, after winning the match stakes of £100, presented Löwenthal with a gift of furniture valued at £120 for his new house.' Morphy was a great gentleman too.

I just had to put my Stockfish desktop version to weigh in on this game to believe what I was seeing. You can really feel a frustrated Morphy in this game. That g4 move really upset him. This wasn't like he played the knight and saw g4. By his subsequent play you could tell g4 was totally unexpected. Morphy I think expected a defense of the "important" central e pawn with 12. Qe2 as more or less forced. Lowenthal probably saw it as just too passive (e.g. blocking the king B) and determined to find something else. This is a great saga. Enjoying the Morphy story. Seeing this game actually illustrates the very tough opposition Morphy had to defeat. Makes Morphy's achievements all the more noteworthy in chess history.

In another way to look at this game ... his father & uncle who trained Morphy whispers in his ear = "give your opponent at least One more victory so he can save face ... you know you're better than him anyway"
@charlescushing1
@charlescushing1 Жыл бұрын
Someone probably said this already, but it seems to me that Morphy was just being a gentleman and allowing Lowenthal to win, more or less. He just backed off and played a fast and loose game and had fun. Fighting with one hand tied behind his back, so to speak. If Morphy won, he won, and if he lost, he also won, because he gave his opponent an opportunity to save face and shine a bit. He was already crushing Lowenthal in the match, no need to utterly humiliate him.

Builds on L's previous victory. L saw through every trap Morphy laid for him and avoided it, and almost invariably saw his own best offensive move. I guess he's shaking off the rust, because he looks like a totally different player than in the early games of the match.

At 3:11 you commented on 12 g4 Ng7 13 Qf6 Rg8 14 Bh6 and said black has to lose the knight now but, as I noticed several people commented also, you can defend it with 14 ... Qf8 or even 14 ... Kf8 But it leaves black in a wretched position, eg 15 O-O-O Nb8 (trying to oust the queen with Nd7) 16 Bg5 Nc6 17 Ne4 h6 18 Nd6+ Kd7 So its likely Morphy considered it better to have two pawns for the piece and an active position.... Why not Grab the G7 Pawn 1:58 ?
@DaveNeve
@DaveNeve 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think white had time as he would have lost his pawn on E4 then plus the pawn you want white to grab is often a poisonous pawn.

After 12.g4 Ng7 13.Qf6 Rg8 14.Bh6 Black could play Qf8 and save the piece for now. But after 15.0-0-0 it is impossible to get rid of the pin. It would be a slow painful death.

Hello. That does actually seem to work but my guess is that Morphy did not play it as it ties up so many of black's pieces in the defense of the king. I guess Morphy wanted a more open position where he could hope for a mistake from his opponent. But who knows :)
