I was once like you. Afraid, timid, hiding behind my pedals. Then I turned my gain to ZERO and PRESTO. My playing has once again emerged.
In this video, I'll show you how setting the gain at zero transformed my playing and how it might be what you need to break out of your rut.

@@SuperdangerStudios thank you a lot for your reply! I have a blues jr myself(ltd tweed) and the nux steel singer and i somehow cant make them work togheter especially with a strat. A bit to brittle. And as here in Romania guitar stores have 1-2 real amps to try, i never heard a real(expensive) amp outside of youtube, so dont know how my tone in my room compares to a deluxe reverb, jtm, plexi etc And if I do have your attention I ll make the most of it and ask you to please, if possible, make a video explaining the guitar ecosystem lingo like: bypass, buffered (i never know what this does in my pedals for example), mids, high mids etc, what are those frequencies and how do they impact tone, like if i wanna make my blues jr sound like a deluxe reverb what frequencies to change, boost, cut etc. Signal chain to daw, how to set audio interface, hiz, input gain especially for software like neural dsp, thu overloud stuff like that. Lots of time guys like yourself look past these which is normal as you know em inside out, but for beginners like myself in the realm of tone and guitar fx its hard to understand all these, and be sure that im doing it right. Im pretty much winging it 😁 Thanks again for the content, its topnotch, likeable, great info, great video, great production and i never feel you re selling me anything, which makes me feel comfortable getting pedals that you use. Also your video on the revival drive, will make me broke, was expecting it to not be cheap but ffffffuuuu... 😂
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios 8 ай бұрын
Right on. Love the blues jr obviously! So in regards to my tone settings I have my bass halfway, mids a bit below halfway, and treble at about 1 o clock. Nothing drastic there. I do play pretty loud though and that matters a lot with the blues jr. It does not sound very good quiet. I usually push the master volume up to 2 or 3 o clock and then add in the volume. This way the powertubes are working hard and the way they break up is a lot more pleasing than the preamp tubes. As for the guitar ecosystem I covered a lot of it here in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rp2uZYujgsqdi6c I think the most influential item to augment your tone is the speaker. Since you are using a Blues Jr. then it comes down to the mic you are using. But if you ever use amp modelers then the IRs you use are going to dictate 90% of the tone in my opinion. The blues jr wont really sound like a deluxe reverb for various reasons (circuitry, tubes, speaker, etc) but you can get close with the right pedals. Obviously the revival drive can help, but other pedals do it really well too. The crazy tube circuits stardust does a great job too: crazytubecircuits.com/stardust-v3 and is more affordable than the revival drive. Since the blues jr is tied to the speaker that comes with it, it will almost always sound the way it sounds, so it comes down to either micing it differently, using a different speaker, or using a preamp style pedal like the revival drive. When going direct into my computer I go from my amp modeler (iridium/revival drive/dream 65) straight into my hi-z input on my daw. Then I add an IR on the channel in the DAW. I usually set the input gain on the audio interface so that the peak/loudest signal only goes to -10db. Really you just don't want to clip in the red. Other than that there is no wrong way with digital recording. As for buffered/true bypass. Buffers boost a signal but is really only necessary when you have really long cables, or tons of pedals in your chain, like over 8. True bypass means that your signal is always staying the same impedance, but since each pedal makes it get lower and lower sometimes this can result in signal loss. Again, if you use less than 8 pedals it is negligible. I know many pro players that don't even mess around with that stuff. I know others that care alot about it. but mostly it comes down to how good is your playing. As for EQ in the DAW, I would not worry about boosting or cutting frequencies yet. They really can only augment the tone that is already there. If there is a problem higher up the chain, no amount of eq or compression can help. In general if I hear a harsh tone its usually due to 2 things. 1. too much gain, either turn down volume or tone knob to 8 and it smooths out the tone. 2. picking technique: pick is being held at too aggressive an angle and needs to flow with the string instead of attacking it. Hopefully this helps with your journey. Let me know if you have more questions. Have you tried the uafx pedals at all? The best sounding amp modelers I have ever heard. You might dig em.

@@SuperdangerStudios Thank you a lot! I ve tried the woodrow at a shop after seeing your video on it a few months ago but with studio monitors, and it didnt really work for me. The tone i loved but the missing loudness and volume just made it seem like a utility instead of a toy. On the modelling side i have the Ampero II and i use that to go in the fx return of my blackstar ht20 with the cab disabled in the ampero, and that makes it sound a lot more real. Going thru studio monitors just takes half of the fun away for me. I use studio monitors at my office and tube amps at home and the loudness of an amp is just something else. But yes for recording i always use thu overloud and neural dsp as its just a lot less hustle and it sounds great in the mix. But as im just playing for the fun of it without any other reason, getting a great tone from my amps is the pinnacle of joy when playing and thats what im looking to make better. I do play with my blackstar(wet) and the blues jr dry, and thats the best tone i have for now. Again thank you for your time. Looking forward to seeing all your new videos.

I think you’re on to something. As guitar amp modelers have gotten better and better over the past decade, tube amp purists have had to constantly move the goalpost. First it was they don’t sound close to a Marshall. Next it was “the top end is fizzy”, now it’s “ it sounds good but doesn’t feel good. When all along it was them hiding behind the sag and latency of a tube amp, to cover for poor technique. Think about it what’s the first thing a demo includes even with equipment that could be run thru clean, “let’s add a little dirt”. ( to cover for my weak pick attack and sloppy playing). You’ve inadvertently outed their secret shame. It not a new guitar or amp or pedal, it’s focus more on the fundamentals of good tone…THE HANDS🤗

Also worth adding that picking lighter when playing with gain will actually make you louder as the sound isn’t compressing as much. Mig-gain with the guitar volume rolled off to 7 or 8, and pick lightly, into a clean high headroom amp - lovely. Another great video - genuinely looking forward to these. Can I ask how you are recording the iridium? Are you using an interface and if so whats your method for dealing with latency? Would you use direct monitoring because you dont need to monitor any plugins? Sorry for all the questions, but you just seem like the guy to ask! Lol

I mainly play clean, but i do like using low gain tones, and when the mood is right some mid-higher gain tones. Most of my gain tones are pedals set to edge of breakup. Its more for the eq curve of the pedal and that bite when u dig in. Most of my main drives i think of more as a preamp then a distortion. It is fun to click on a Fuzz Face or a Rat when the mood is right though. 😁

Couldn’t watch this while it was live but I’m really excited about this concept. Being able to reduce gain and still get your music across is liberating! From taking up too much space on my pedalboard with gain pedals, to feeling too dependent on pedals in general (psychological battle), this is always something I’m working on. Plus, less gain means more presence in the mix oftentimes in my experience.

Perfect timing. Those use less gain voices? Were they reading my mind? I've got a philosophical, practical, and video request comment. I'm a low gain guy. Not really a metal guy, but definitely a fan of Jimi and Jimmy. Tomo Fujita talked about practicing with a Fender Bass Musicmaster amp. Pretty primitive. No pedals and bright. So there's no place to hide. I don't think we disagree, because there two kinds of practice. This setup provides undeniable feedback so you are aware of and can work on the things you mentioned. And muting. IIRC I saw a video arguing that muting is the sign of a studio pro. I buy that, because while I struggle to do it right, man is it pure when I pull it off. So I've been doing both kinds of practicing. Jimmy Page started with Flamenco and then was a studio guy for a few years. He formed Zeppelin so he could play loud and "sloppy." He didn't start out that way. Other than the way we all do. The practical aspects of low gain pedal chains are a fascinating topic. Hope you'll do more on it. My current drive chain is the OE-DCX Boost > Catalinbread 5F6 > OE Halcyon Gold > J. Rockett H.R.M. The last stands for Hot Rubber Monkey, which is an Hot Rodded Dumble. Our pedals overlap. I have no idea what I'm doing, or if the order makes sense. But I get some tones I like. I took the OE-MEQ out because it confused me. And the H.R.M. is too hot for what I'm chasing, though the tone is spectacular, even when turned down to zero. I'm replacing it with The Dude. I'd be interested in seeing you pursue this low gain thread. Especially with your OE pedals and single coils. [Ironically, using the set it and forget it approach, I'm using a PRS SE Semi-Hollow Custom 22 modded along the lines of John Mayer's PRS Super Eagle. The controls are so complicated I've forgotten how to use them. Sounds great, if you're searching for Jerry tones. No idea if or which pickups are coil-tapped.] Finally, my Sweetwater guy just told me how everyone seems to love the PRS SE DGT. I haven't explored them yet. But I'd be interested in seeing your thoughts or with the OE pedals. Great video as usual. And great advice. Thanks.

@@Durkhead Probably, but I'm old and a mechanical coward. I got my amps upstairs, somehow, including a Twin Reverb bought in the 80s. It's not leaving until I do. I do have a clean amp and UA pedals that have cab sims. So I believe you.

@mikem668 just don't buy anymore pedals. the only other thing that will make a difference in tone is a 5or7 band equalizer

@@Durkhead I'm not saying you're wrong, and maybe if I live long enough I'll do the same. For now, as someone late to the party, I find it educational. It's both frustrating and interesting. That said, I find it hard to believe all differences can be EQed away. The argument reminds me somewhat of the debate over high end stereo systems. Mine was decent. And I realize that people had different tastes. But I was lucky enough to hear a really high-end system in a friend's house. It was spectacular. Back then I could definitely hear the difference. Today, who knows.

@mikem668 all probs definitely cannot be eq'd away. It's just that an equalizer is pedal that will make the most difference besides changing the speaker. Especially if your gona try what this guy is saying and "turn down the gain" just don't keep buying different boost and overdrive pedals cause they all sound almost exactly the same. There is definitely a difference between high end stereo recievers and low end receivers, but with Guitar amps there's not much difference as long as you get a tube amp.

And here I was thinking, more gain sounds like, better?🥲 but it it’s not? Lmao! Have you demoed the UA Lion yet? I’m wanting to try that one and the new Friedman IR-X, both have got me gassin’ bad bad.

Not yet! I am gonna check out the ox stomp next. I got one but it was DOA so exchanging it for a working one. I'd love to try the LION though.
