Instead of having a menstrual cup, i got an IUD - no more periods plus anticonceptive and you change it every 5 years. Idk if its cheaper or less waste but it feels more eco friendly

Reusable produce bags are really easy to make, I make them and sell them to co workers and stuff and i use sheer fabric from the thrift store like old curtains , so very sustainable :)

i love the bulk buying culture in Western Australia (not sure about the rest of the world, but i don’t see anyone else talking about it lol) because it’s almost expected that shops have a bin full of donated jars for people to use for free instead of buying knew ones.

Also with jars, if they had food in them and are up-cycled, that means the glass is tempered, and can withstand serious heat and cold with MUCH less chance of cracking and shattering. Why pay extra for tempered glass when you can get it from old food jars! :)

They are charging you for the work. No such thing as a free lunch. You can make any glassware tempered yourself. Just boil the glassware yourself. Put it in a pot of cold water and turn on the heat.

So when my husband and I moved into our house, we discovered that the people who'd lived here before us had left us their curtains. I took down and donated most of the curtains, but one of them was the PERFECT material for produce bags! Not only that, but it had a cute ruffle on top which still works as a valance for the guest room window! :D

I have now switched to only bar soap for my face, shower, hair, even lotion and it is amazing for traveling! No need to mess with the liquid restrictions or mess of an exploding bottle.

YES! Gotta love it! I have always been that person that gets sooooo paranoid that my liquid products will leak everywhere when traveling (definitely happened to me when I was younger and scarred my for life haha) and it is SO nice to not have that lingering in my mind. So I totally relate haha! I'm still working on finding a bar soap that works for my face, but I have faith! 💛

I actually love my travel utensils. It came in a cute bag, and they stay in my locker at work, since that’s the only place I use them (they only have individually wrapped plastic utensils). And I second upcycling jars. Salsa and jelly jars are the best!

I use gift bags sometimes when I shop aldi😂 happy birthday. Merry Christmas. Congrats on your baby. I reuse big sturdy gift bags. Especially if its fabric or has fabric straps.

I cut up an old tank top to use as a hankie as well as (after washing it) a napkin when necessary. It also works well to carry cutlery in my bag with. A bandanna from Walmart works really well too and is nice and cheap.

Maybe you heard that already or somebody else have mentioned that here (I didn't find). It seems that paper actually makes it worth for the running nose. I have this problem myself and I feel that with hankies it is way better. Probably there is some kind of paper "dust" on the paper things which comes to your nose and provokes more of a running nose. I am definitely happy to switch to hankies. I change mine every day and carry around in a small pouch I had in my home without use and it all feels now very clean and convenient. I love this swap ) ))

I bought one of those keep cups impulsively one day at a coffee cart - because it was so darn cute! I was so distracted trying to decide what coffee I wanted I didn't realise the price until the coffee was already inside it! 😭 I used it as much as possible but because it's glass and doesn't have a handle, the practicality of it wasn't great for actual use, because when it's filled with a hot drink you just can't hold it properly. As much as I liked the fact that it fit into most of my handbags, I bought a thermal mug with a handle and I don't have to worry about it breaking in my bag or dropping and breaking it. Sigh. It's still so cute though!

I love love love my mason jars. They replaced plastic storage, and has made it so I can prep for the week. Also it was the only way I could get the family on board, because they don't have to find the particular lid that fits the one jar it came with. Works for us.

I hear you on the reusable cotton rounds! I didn't buy any but I have always just used my face cloth for anything that I would need a cotton round for. I DO have some cotton rounds that I use to remove finger nail polish with. I have not figured out anything better since nail polish doesn't really wash out of anything. Truthfully I have only put polish on my toes twice since last May anyway.

my favorite thing to use in replace of mason jars are mostly used candles, my family has so many so all you have to do is depot the candle (there are many ways to do it) and then you can use them to store things! like diy face wash/makeup remover or even for bars of soap, and then on top of that you can use the depoted wax as a candle melter!

Cotton rounds can be easily upcycled with a flannel receiving blanket from the thrift store. Softer than terry cloth and minimal fraying, so you don’t have to sew around the edges :)

I was tempted to buy mason jars when trying to reduce my waste and noticed the Classico pasta sauce comes in mason jars. My husband and I eat pasta at least once a week and when they're bogo at publix, they're cheaper then buying other pasta sauce brands in ugly jars lol. I've now run out of room in my cabinets with all the jars 😂

Have also found that terry cloth is difficult to wash clean. To reduce laundry and ensure towels are clean, I use linen fabric such as those large flour sack towels as bath towels. Two are sufficient for someone even with long hair.

I have a Starbuck's reusable cup I got for free while I worked there. I take it everywhere for coffee drinks. (I also have a water bottle, but I got that glass at Target.) It lets me keep the way I feel carrying a branded item, but I also get to save the planet more - and most places (Starbuck's included) offer discounts if you bring your own cup.

A note about reusable bags: *YOU NEVER HAVE TO BUY REUSABLE BAGS EVERRRRR.* Unless you're intent on your shopping bags keeping up with your beige/white ~aesthetique~, you can very easily make your own bag out of an old t-shirt in under 10 minutes with only a pair of scissors (no sewing required). The bag is SUPER durable, you can wash it easily (it's a t-shirt, remember? just throw it in the wash), and you can use it for everything - shopping, groceries, gym bag, etc. Plus they are easily rolled or tied up to store small. Make 10 of them, put some in your car, some at home, give them to friends. Here are the instructions: www.mommypotamus.com/no-sew-t-shirt-tote-bag-tutorial/ Don't get too scared about the tying knots technique -- just tie knots until it looks sealed, making sure you tie each piece twice. You can always re-tie them over time.

I grew up in California and Reuse, Recycle, Rot has always been a way of life (yes I know I am missing some “R”s there lol). Since high school I have unintentionally gone more towards “minimalism” and “low-waste.” It started when I decided that I didn’t want to buy books (we are major bibliophiles) unless I truly loved the book or couldn’t find it anywhere to borrow, I also look to second hand stores for them first even when gifting them to others. The second swap was changing my beauty routine to oil cleansing and ACV and getting more natural shampoo (I have always used bar soap). Since these swaps I discovered low-waste and all the great swaps that can be made and have been slowly transitioning as I use up what I have. My favorites have been safety razor and cloth pads. Still on the journey but I love having reusable plastic free (mostly) alternatives, can’t wait to try shampoo bars.

When buying anything used, or even new for that matter, setting it out in the sun for a few hours will help to disinfect it. Then wash it and make sure it dries completely. It makes cleaning easier to use furniture with removable, washable coverings.

Pillows are huge landfill contributors, and never really wash clean. You can test this by putting dye in the middle of the pillow stuffing, then washing it. An alternative pillow is down cycled fluffy fabric or clothing inside a pillowcase. Easy to wash clean.

In Switzerland we do not use drinking straws. (Maybe only a few restaurants that are non Swiss like Mac Donalds. But one had to close down due to all the pollution that was lying around from their place. This was mostly tourists.) Jolly good show as well. Planet Hollywood did not last long here either.

I loved the video!!! It shows a little bit of the"bad" side of this trend becoming a lifestyle. For me I found it a little fustrating when articles always said use what you have lying around. For me that wasn't really an option. My parents didn't buy too many things in reusable containers, even plastic they'd be tossed or recycled before i could blink. They are actually really good with recycling 😅So i did save a few jars, however i just moved out and have very few belongings, so i don't have anything just lying around. So i've thrifted most of my jars for mere cents. I do like my bamboo cutlery because it does have it's own holder so they're not loose in my bag. And i always forgot to pack a spoon or fork when i needed one so... it's been useful 😊 However, I do sort of regret buying mesh produce bags. I live alone and shop every week and half to 2 weeks for food. As well as i don't typically buy enough bulk fruit or veggies to fill them. But, i'm not really formally cooking anything so we'll see in the future when i start getting into vegetarian recipes. 😊😊😊 DRAWSTRING BAGS THOUGH👌👌👌

I for sure agree with you saying Mason jars aren't worth it. I have bought packs of them with the intent of using them to meal prep and honestly they are such an awkward shape. Now I just use them as cups but I wish I would've saved the money and bought jars and tubs from the thrift store.

My favourite straw is one my mum bought me a while back which is basically a soft silicone tube with a metal casing so it bends without cutting off, but doesn't just....flop. It's foldable, sturdy, amy favourite thing about it is that the silicone protudes out at either end meaning there's a soft mouthpiece you can bite if you're like me! I also love the straw set my sister bought me from Singapore, which came with a short, narrow straw which is now my pocket straw so I always have a little one with me if I forget my foldable one or if I'm just popping somewhere. Most-loved product so far though has to be my new Denttabs with fluoride from my nearest refill stall. I've Sharpied an old Extra gum tub and glucose testing strip pot for home (Extra tub) and travel (testing strip pot): they've got copper-coloured teeth on the lids with smiley faces, copper edging on the lids, and 'Dentifrice' in copper around the bodies. I can fit nearly a month's worth of Denttabs in the small pot which is awesome, and they're so refreshing...plus they have fluoride so they are literally the whole package, and for the first time in my life I can't wait to see the dentist so I can wax lyrical to him as well lmao

I have been using the Jumping Juniper shamp bar from Lush. I still have not found package free conditioner that works. I tried their big bar thing but it didn’t fare well on me. Also I would say that I think I have had more luck with the bar since I literally cut all of my hair off into a pixie style. Less hair is less work and less product! Great video though and I love the swaps you have!

So so true! Long hair is defo higher maintenance and in some ways, less sustainable if you think about the extra product it needs haha. But I definitely recommend the conditioner I use! It's awesome and I buy it at Ulta (by a brand called "Bar None") 💛x

I have been using a pick jar up cycled HOWEVER I was wondering if you or anyone you know has changed the lids? Maybe painted them? Mine has the pickle logo on it and I’d rather them be just a solid color. Thanks darling! Love you and your channel!!

Melissa Deitrick I used leftover chalkboard paint on the lids of pasta sauce jars. If you change the product in the container you can easily erase the lid as needed. I like my items to match 🤷‍♀️

I repurpose a salsa glass jar to make my mouthwash. I repurpose my glass peanut butter jars to hold vinegar sponges for laundry. I repurpose my Oui yogurt jars to put my homemade caramel sauce, little dips and little bits like nuts. I have not bought reusable straw, because I do have some paper ones that I use infrequently and also have a plastic travel cup that comes WITH a straw, so I just use that in other cups if I need to. I LOVE my cotton rounds! I cleaned out a yankee candle jar with the wide mouth and they fit perfectly in there! I tried to use an old t-shirt split up but one layer wasn't enough and working with it was more trouble because there was no 'substance' to it, and my sewing machine is not working currently. At the beginning of my journey, I bought a 3-pack of lingerie washing bags from the Dollar Tree and used those for my produce! They work, but my only aggravation is things like bananas don't slide in as easily because the stem nibs get caught on the poly mesh going in. So yes, they work, but they are a bit more aggravating than an actual produce bag. I would suggest if someone is really really low on money, they could still make this swap. My TOP fav of my zero waste products though is my bidet and family cloth.

I loved my single-use fast food, coffee, and boba tea cups/lids/straws SO MUCH, you're not not the only one. It's easily been the hardest thing to give up in my quest for being less wasteful. I'm very shy and easily embarrassed, so I won't even ask at the counter if I can use my own cup, I just completely stopped shopping at places where I normally would get a disposable plastic or paper cup!! 😫 Hopefully, one day I'll get braver and get over my fear to being my own cup. For now-no soda or boba for me (which I got basically EVERY DAY)

If you are interested in bamboo straws for a reusable option instead of metal or glass straws, I got mine from Kawayan Bamboo! It's a small business in Oklahoma, the woman who owns/runs the business has bamboo growing on her property that was planted years ago by someone else, and since bamboo is invasive in North America it's actually great because she's cutting it down to make these straws! I really liked buying my straws from here since I know exactly how the bamboo was sourced/harvested! She has a tik Tok channel too if you want to see the bamboo firsthand

I just recently ordered a stainless steel cutlery set for the case it comes with so I can have it in my purse, mess free. It's coming this week but I wish I had it because I just went to a Crawfish seafood place for the first time yesterday with my friend and his four kids and I brought my silicone straws for us and felt good...but when I asked for a fork to peel and devein the shrimp (hack) since I couldn't really do it with the gloves, they gave me a plastic fork and my friend saw my face drop. I wish I had brought a fork! Lol

Runny nose person as well (like you I've been dealing with this all my life - people keep asking me if I have a cold) and I use paper tissues. I've been using hankies as a kid and personally found them disgusting and not very hygienic. I just buy tissues on boxes and stuff few in my pocket when I'm going out. On the shampoo bar - I've very fine, straight hair and find that shampoo bars make my hair really greasy. I prefer rye flour and use a liquid shampoo every few days when my hair is starting to look limp. I'm lucky to be able to get my shampoo from a zero waste shop though, I refill my old bottle. Love the decor in the flat btw, looks so comfy and the coffee table is to die for x

About the travel cutlery... I really used my set a lot because I never felt safe using the stuff my uni provided at the cafeteria because everyone would just touch every fork or spoon in a big basket.. irgs BUT I didn't buy my set because I used the stainless steel one my dad got from his time in the army 30 years ago 😂 Maybe some of your family members do have something like this at home

Would you consider seeing if Foreo would send you one of their Issa toothbrushes and doing a review? I've been looking for a zero waste electric toothbrush, and that was the closest one I could find. There's VERY mixed reviews, glowing and negative. A big thing is people saying it stop works after roughly 4 months of use? I'm so on the fence!

Tracy N It totally does, at least it worked for me (wavy hair, sensitive scalp). I also only had to wash my hair four days later because it was clean and didn’t smell at all. You just have to rub the shampoo bar directly on your scalp (if you’re allergic to some things, try wetting and rubbing it on your wrist and check for any reaction first) and lather up well.

The thing I regret most is actually a useful article: A flask for DIY deodorant. However, since no deodorant recipe works for me, it currently serves as a container for shaving oil. I used my travel cutlery set only once, same goes for the bamboo coffee cup I bought. What was I thinking, I eat and drink at home all the time! When I made the swap to cloth hankies, I did not have to buy anything new because I already had five hankies. I had bought those years ago to dab of sweat, but I realized I could use them to blow my nose, too. I then got a batch of cloth handkerchiefs from my Grandma -- my late Grandpa hated disposable nose-blowers. Then there is some things I decided not to swap. I haven't gotten a silicone oven mat yet. I use my oven rarely, I don't always need a paper lining, and these can be reused once or twice, too. Not to mention that I still have a box of paper that I bought several years ago. Why throw out perfectly good stuff? That's simply misguided.
