After the six single crotchets on the magic ring my project looks nothing like in the video and I can't figure out why , mine simply just looks like a circle with a chain stitch on one side

Well, it's mandatory to use one to keep it's shape and stay up. It might not turn out great if you don't use one. You can obtain it from cheese, yogurt or ice cream containers by cutting the shown shape easily!! 💜
