Attempting a cruise control retrofit, bought the stalks and coded option $544 to the VO thinking that would be it !. Turns out I needed an LDM module as well because my car is an early 2006 e90, then it quickly became apparent that I also needed a new cluster because the current one can't display cruise control info, which has led me to this video. Thanks to you I have the confidence to attempt the cluster virginization myself. Have ordered the programmer and test clip

i haven't bought my programming setup yet, i'm just getting into this & doing my initial homework, but my educated guess would be that the cap is shorting out the power rail to the target IC. tantalum caps can fail shorted. also some of the cheap/counterfit tantalum caps might be shorted from new. aside from that, could be a pcb layout error where someone connected the cap incorrectly.

The software is pretty hit or miss, right click and choose 'run as administrator' got rid of a lot of the software errors for me (still can't get a read on the eeprom but seems to be connecting to the r270+ device at least)

There is zero difference between a red or blue R270 made after 2015. The issue with with any R270 red or blue made in the last 5-6 years is in the main unit of the R270 they stared using a cheap read only chip on position U2 . To fix that you need to remove the cheap chip and install the proper Texas instruments AHC08 read and write chip in position U2 of the main unit. The eeprom board you need to remove the yellow cap on C1 and if you have a resistor on R14 you need to remove that also but most made in the last few years don't have a resistor on R14 so the yellow cap in position C1 is most likely all you need to remove . With these 2 simple mods the R270 will read and write and erase any M35080 3/6 V6/VP 080DOWQ 35160 160D with zero issues or corrupting data. The Texas Instruments SN74AHC08DR is a few bucks and easy to replace with a hot air station

@@Petruccimaniac I think what your talking about is the Ak90 Bmw ews key machine ,in that it's either position U2 or U3 there is a 8 pin chip and some come with a chip and some come without that chip,works either way. .But on the R270 cas bdm reader you need to take off the 4 screws on the main unit and inside right under U2 there is a 14 pin chip should be HC08 and you need to replace that with a Texas instruments AHCO8 . The only 8 pin chips in the R270 main unit are in position U10, U4 and U5. The epprom board that plugs into the R270 if there is a yellow tantalum capacitor on position C1 you need to remove that .

@@Norbbbbbb Yes very easy fix ,on the eeprom adapter that you plug into the R270 on position C12 you will have a yellow tantalum capacitor ,you need to remove that capacitor. Remove it and it will read and write all chips listed and do the pin test properly.

I’ve actually bought an R270 clone of ebay back in the day and it came with the blue board. It does read and write 080d0wq eeproms but it could never do mileage with the test clip. Probably gonna remove that capacitor (it’s a cap, not a resistor 😉) from the board and gonna give that another go 😅 thanks for making this video Andrew, I might learn a thing or 2 from you as well 😂

Tried reading with it but it reads only zeros(0 for the first and second row and 80 for the next ones), i tested with the multimeter every pin, so the eeprom is connected properly to the programmer but still getting zeroes, any ideas?

Hello, for some reason R270 program goes into "Not Responding" mode for a minute, happens when i read, write, save or load file. im using windows 10. It works fine on windows XP and Windows 7. i do see youre using windows 10 but you dont have the same issue was wondering if theres something i need to to do to make this program work fine on windows 10. also it goes in "Not Responding" even if i dont have the programmer hooked up and im just trying to load a BIN file to view it on R270 program.

F8X is a completely different ball game. There are different variations of the EEPROMs throughout the years. Anything after 2015 becomes quite difficult.😊

Grays are always vague with the engine mechanical light description , you don’t know if they mean the engine light and the airbag light or just the airbag and they just group it with engine and mechanical cause it’s easier. The cheapest m5 at the moment is $43k so could be a steal .

No do not solder it back on ,it should of never been put on there because the very early units never had that cap. Keep that yellow cap on and erasing first 2 lines (mileage) on certain chips like 35080vp/v6 it will ruin the chip for sure and be unusable . Won't be able to write the first 2 lines after that no matter what you will need a new epprom. Leave it off and its all good.

The mileage and vin edit only removes the DOT at the center of the cluster, coding is needed for needles for RPM, fuel gauge and temp. gauge to work
