This is the beginning of "Adventure Mode", which is basically a series of challenge missions with a "mission select screen" that mimics the original Legend of Zelda game. You're given an 8-bit map of Hyrule, and clear the mission on one square of the map in order to unlock adjacent ones. Clearing certain missions will give you adventure mode items which you can use on certain map squares, which will cause 8-bit Link to do something (like bombing a wall) and obtaining a weapon/character/heart piece for you.
