This just HAS to be the most beautiful performance of this old traditional American ballad that I have ever heard... and it is Sooo beautiful to watch as well, everyone from the lovely Ernestina to the young ladies in the chorus to the wonderful musicians in the orchestra. I learned this lovely old song when I was a kid in the 1950s, when a chorus of which I was a member performed it at recitals at our church on several occasions. My mother, the choir director, (also the pianist, and organist) insisted that we all know the story of the lyrics, of the fur trader traveling on the Missouri River and the Native American chief's daughter with whom he was in love , and her father, Shenandoah. And my mother insisted that we memorize the lyrics, as with every piece we performed. No pages rattling or dropping to the floor... and eye contact with our audience... our parents and the congregation. And I still remember every word of the lyrics to this day. It is also where I first learned Mr. Dvořák's "Když mne stará matka" ("Songs My Mother Taught Me", in the English language version which we sang), which Ernestina and members of this orchestra and chorus have also performed and recorded beautifully in a rare music video titled "Last Journey Home". So this is a very emotional and wonderful experience for me every time I play this beautiful performance by Ernestina and this superb orchestra and chorus. 💖💖😊

Wonderful performance! Monsieur Zevnik’s goal, in his words, was to create an "amazing musical journey into heart of American soul, which I experienced during my cycling trip from Boston to Seattle.” He is succeeding. The origins of Oh Shenandoah Across the Wide Missouri are obscure but stem from the early part of the nineteenth century. The music meant different things to different groups. But to my ancestors who escaped the wars and famine of Europe it represented the journey to a new life free from all those horrors. And it is just a beautiful song sung by a beautiful lady. Bravo Mr. Zevnik, can’t wait to see what comes next!

I agree with you about the violas and cellos (and contrabass ?) carrying that one long note throughout the first verse and well into the whole piece. Actually, those string musicians pretty much set the mood for this whole ballad, portraying (in my mind) the beautiful, so-slowly-moving upper Missouri River in the American Dakota territory, where the story of this ballad takes place. A beautiful orchestral arrangement by Primož, for sure. He seems to have a habit of doing that. 😊 And of course, it helps to have this superb orchestra and chorus, and the amazing Ernestina to make it happen. 💖😊

Exquisite. The origins of the song may be the time of the Louisiana Purchase, when Bonaparte transferred the midcontinental territories to Jefferson. The Shenandoah may be name of a chief, not the river in the Appalachians. Shenandoah may have had a geomorphological meaning common to many native languages of the Algonquian family. It means sprucy stream, i.e., a stream flowing beside high hills, mountains or cliffs, thereby chilled by their shadow and resulting in a subarctic microclimate with boreal flora. Such a microclimate within a larger temperate climate is common in the Appalachian mountains, but can also be found in the Black Hills and the Missouri Breaks.

@conradinhawaii7856

Sorry, Matthew, but your comment is pure buffalo chips. This old, traditional American ballad has absolutely Zero to do with the Louisiana Purchase, the Appalachians, "geomorphological" nonsense, "sprucy streams", "subarctic microclimates with boreal flora" (Oh, Brrrrother ! 😊🤣), or ANYthing other than the story told in the original verses going back to its earliest origins in the early 1800s. The story is of a fur trader traveling on the Missouri River who has fallen in love with the daughter of a Native American tribal chief, "Shenandoah", whose nation lives on the banks of the upper Missouri in what was then the Dakota territories. It has been "...seven long years since last I saw you", and he longs to reunite with his love, not knowing if her father will allow it or even if she is still "available". I have known this story since I first learned the song in the mid' 1950s when we performed it in a children's chorus and my mother, our choir director and pianist, insisted that all of us kids know the story of the ballad we were going to perform (The traditional 1800s lyrics... long before the "modified" Bob Dylan version ). So you can take my word for it, or you can look it up. And, by the way... "looking stuff up" is always good policy before posting on KZbin, if you do not wish to appear as an ignorant dolt before those of us who actually Do "know stuff about stuff"... especially early-American music, and also, in this case, Ernestina and this wonderful Gimnazija Kranj Symphony Orchestra and Choruses, with whom you are also obviously completely unfamiliar. 😊🤔
