I love this song! It nearly always makes me cry. The man singing it sounds like John McDermott from the Irish Tenors. It definitely doesn’t sound like the Kingston Trio. I love John McDermott’s voice, but if this isn’t him singing, whoever it is has the perfect voice for this beautiful song.

This is the best one of all of them! This song brought me good memories! This song I sang to a girl in my grade school class without her knowing it. We were sitting in our seats. Angie was in front of me without warning she turned around and faced me singing this song. We were both in love with each other! Oh. One more thing this song brought me to tears, also!!

I think this song is about the chief of the Oneida people not the river. a white man fell in love with his daughter but the chief refused him. The chief ended his days in southern Ontario Canada and lived I believe to a ripe old age of 106.

This song, with the beautiful views of the land, captures the very soul and spirit of our land, this, our nation. I can feel the spiritual presence of "the city on a hill."

Flying from the west with a large number of Sweet Adeline singing groups who had been competing. One looked out the window and saw the Missouri RIver. Guess what they all started singing? Yup, looked out the window and never thought of that river the same way again. Best flying experience ever,

The Christian Pawnee or Oneida Chief, Shenandoah, is being asked for his daughter's hand in marriage. The one doing the asking is an indentured servant who will be free once he comes back from "Across the wide Missouri." My favorite of many explanations of the meaning of this song. Chief Shenandoah did exist.

My grandmother in Virginia use to sing this song to me whenever she would beat me. She would reign blows down upon my head and back, even whacked the hell out of me with a baseball bat a few times. She wouldn't stop beating me until she finished singing the whole song. I was usually pretty black and blue by the time the song was over. I kept Trying to run away and she would catch me and say stay still and take your medicine. If I ran she beat me even harder. This song brings back a lot of memories.

Smug Smugly ~Hehehahaha, ohhh, yes, those grammaws could discipline. Good laugh, cuz it brought back memories of my own beatings, whatever was in her hand, once the flat side of a corn knife! She had good aim.

Beautiful, but not the Kingston Trio. If you want to hear the Kingston Trio sing this, look up Kingston Trio Across the Wide Missouri. Loved them for years, and this is not them. Their version is beautiful too.

Listening to it, I immediately thought of John McDermott of the Irish Tenors. He’s one of my absolute favorites. I looked to see if John had a version on KZbin and when I found and listened to it, I was certain that he’s the one singing this version. It’s truly one of the most beautiful, heart wrenching songs I’ve ever heard.

Everyone is correctly pointing out that this is not the Kingston Trio; not only that, this is not the song “Shenandoah”, it’s a lyric mash-up of that song and the song “Across the Wide Missouri”. “Shenandoah” has nothing to do with the Shenandoah River in VA.
