I appreciate your well-meaning thoughts, but ideologically, I think Eastern authors should preserve their integrity and decency and create their own WorldVision instead of the eurocentric and racist Eurovision. Older viewers will remember that Eurovision used to be a very exclusive club of the Cold War Western European core and only in the 70s were Yugoslavia and israel and then Turkey in the early 80s (if my memory serves me) were "allowed" to join for political reasons. Eurovision's musical concept was always a neutral-looking, watered-down and simplified but, at its core, still elitist light music with roots in older European operettas and traditional canzonas. Only after more Eastern European countries were allowed to join did the West introduce the idea that Eurovision was this kitschy and excessive spectacle of primitive instincts. I thought that the East livened up the concept and brought in more dynamism, movement, creativity, and energy. The Western media turned to a derisive and arrogant discourse in order to hide their contempt for the fact that their artists should share the platform, God forbid, with the 'Orientals' now. You can tell that eastern artists put in a lot of energy and creativity in the representation, whereas western authors more often than not, take a purposefully subversive approach by sending excessively bad acts, which was never the point of the old Eurovision. By acting this way, they make a very clear statement that neither the Iron-Curtain paradigm has died out (BBC's host Terry Wogan, in 2006 "We're gonna have to build the Wall [again]) nor that the western orientalism has disappeared. Everything Professor Edward Said taught us still stands. Unfortunately. So, by the same token, we need to stop using Eurovision as a measure of success for music artists. We ought to stop yearning for the World (i.e. the non-diasporic, and thus geographically and culturally discontiguous West) to see them and recognise them as if that is the only way to be recognised.
