Very nice video of the Kumamoto trams. By the way, it's interesting that to find a tram in Japan, you have to either go away from well-known tourist areas in Tokyo and Osaka, go to Hiroshima, or go to a smaller city like Kagoshima, Kumamoto, Nagasaki or Toyama to find them.

If I remember correctly, Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya replaced most of their tram systems with a combination of subways and commuter trains because given the destruction from the Pacific War (太平洋戦争), it was cheaper to built them as part of the public transportation expansion in the 1950's and 1960's. Interestingly, the Hiroden (広電) tram system was never replaced because the river delta location of Hiroshima made it too expensive to build a subway system.
