From every city pop song from the 80s I've listened to is a mixture of blues, jazz, funk, and they even have a chorus with a ton of spirit (like soul music) which a majority of songs lack today.

I agree, i came across this "City Pop" music randomly and it changed my perspective of music...Weird, cause musically, its just westernized late 70's/ early 80's Funk R&B Pop...i guess it's the combination of the soothing foreign vocals that appeals to me along with the familiarity of the beat!

Frankie Midnight Creative Artist right. A lot of the songs are even copies of American songs (not this one). But there's just something about the melodies and the sound of the language that is striking.

Iantuition exactly. You should check out this band called, "Cortex". French jazz band from the 70s. They have an album called "Troupeau Blue". Amazing. The vocals aren't in English but the music is this smooth easy listening pop Jazz from that time. Really awesome!
