Two of the lead developers of Elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall have assembled a studio and are working on Spiritual Successor known as Wayward Realms. They have a Kickstarter up. I'm going to be discussing Daggerfall, the typical pitfalls of Kickstarter, and Wayward Realms itself.
TLDW: I like it.

I'm reasonably optimistic about this game? They did already reach their minimum required amount on kikstarter so that's one step achieved. Then comes the risk of launching early access but IF they actually manage to make their procedurally generated story work this could prevent one of the biggest issues with early access games : fatigue. When you get an early access game you only get part of the game, and appart for some very rare exceptions you 'll never play a game more than a couple of times. So before the game is even finished you are done with it because there will rarely be enough added content between ea and full release to make you play it again. And this leaves you with the impression of a game much more underwhelming than you were promised because you only played a 70 or 80% version of it in EA and never the full version after release. With procedural generation impacting the story this could be prevented because you'll never play the same story twice, it offers so much replayablility that if you like the gameplay you'll have no issue finding interest in it at launch even if you played it earlier.

I really wouldn't believe they could pull this type of procedural generation without the technical genius of Julian Lefay. Having such a massive world feel explorable and not a wasteland, procedural world events, a virtual gamemaster, and all the other mechanics they talked about seems like a difficult endeavor.
@MultiSpeedMetal
@MultiSpeedMetal 3 ай бұрын
I'm not confident in them making it not feel soulless. Daggerfall is interesting as a novelty but has fundamental problems related to the design. I would like a hybrid approach with handcrafted writing, lore, and locations like in Morrowind but with the extra systems of Daggerfall. The map can be big with some procedural generation, but Daggerfall's is so big that it breaks the supposed simulator feel it's going for because you basically have to fast travel and there's no detail in the world. Otherwise, I think this will feel like fantasy Starfield.
@epitaph3988
@epitaph3988 3 ай бұрын
I mean you need to keep in mind when exactly Daggerfall was released and how short its development cycle was. Just the scope and scale of the game alone was unbelievably ambitious for 1996 (never mind the fact that it was developed in a mere 2 years) and the technology simply wasn't there at the time for the devs to fully realize their vision, hence why it feels so empty and repetitive. With how far game design has come in the past 30 years (especially procedural generation) I think the devs deserve a bit of optimism.
@solid_snek

My biggest gripes with Daggerfall are the clunky controls, inconsistent art style, and visual presentation as a whole (not graphical fidelity, mind you). If the Wayward Realms achieved nothing but more natural looking proc gen environments and good controls, being on par with Daggerfall otherwise, it would be a masterpiece in my opinion. Looking good so far, and definitely worth the KS backing.

I play Vanilla games. If I have to mod them, then I don't think it's worth of my attention. I love Daggerfall. The only bug that needs to be fixed is when you sheath your weapon, an audio bug goes off like crazy. That sucks. But to be honest I'm fine with Vanilla.

An example of a game I love to pieces but never mod is Chrono Trigger, my favorite video game. Played about 400 hours of it over the years. But I haven't played it in several years, I've done everything there is to do. Contrast that to Daggerfall where I've played THOUSANDS of hours because I get these unofficial sequels in the form of modding. More and more new experiences in a familiar framework. I don't feel that the original experience I had vanilla was invalidated in any way, nor would I recommend someone mod the game right out of the gate, but puritanism is self-limiting.

I will categorically reject all appeals to authority on what is or isn't a "REAL" game. Mods, Fan Games, Homebrew Modules for Tabletop, I'm all about all of this. We can separate things based on authorial intent, what the author wanted versus what the additions or modifications were, and that's fine and I respect it. That said, none of it precludes the existence of derived works. I said this back in my fallout video, Brand IP Canon only has value to have a common frame of reference, after which we need to start viewing art more like art and less like religions. None of it is sacred and we should all be taking our own cracks at it.
@Elrohof

@@LordVader1094 Eh, that is often done in a clumsy manner. Take RimWorlds "Vanilla Expanded" series of mods (I don't think I'm kidding if I'm saying there's 100+ mods in the series). Just a single one of those adds SO MUCH that every menu you have to navigate gets bogged down, diluting the experience. Not to mention that a lot of the stuff added is leagues more powerful than vanilla items, and if not they've added intense quirks to the system to balance it, with the caveat that you can farm some rare item to finally offset the quirks. Modders with the capability to capture the 'vanilla' feel is a rare breed.

Stretch goals always make me hesitate. If they make the stretch goals ... the game will take longer to make. I've seen games meet a long list of stretch goal, so much so that the release date was pushed back over a year. Like I'd rather have the game as early as possible, and through the income of those sales the dev add things to the game (updates) or even DLC for sale. I don't want to help fund a great game that I'll be dead before I can play it.

I will post here an answer from one of the devs on the WR discord about a similar question: Punch Elf: The stretch goals are to implement more into the EA build within the same development timeline as the 800k. They would allow us to pay more of our developers who can then implement this stuff, and it would look much more appealing to a publisher. The plan is to take the vertical slice to a publisher and ask for funding The vertical slice (the Early Access build) is what we'll be showing them The text on the Kickstarter page basically outlines what the full game will have

I have several concerns. First, the one Indigo raised a few years ago. That the "OG's" and La Fey in particular had lost interest and were merely vestigal and phoning the game in. Leaving the game to be developed by a group of young and inexperienced volunteers who couldn't even figure out Daggerfall's first dungeon, then there's the plan for the kickstarter to build awareness for investors. Which I find so painfully naive. What if that doesn't work? Another kickstarter with diminshing returns? I've been round the block a few times with Kickstarter and can't help but suspect those donating to this one are ignorant of the many crowdfunded failures. And the "this one is different" fallacy. There are just too many red flags for me.

Finally, healthy skepticism. I didn't have high hopes for the game either, and after looking at their 'stretch goals' I'm more than a little put off by it. Gating different playable races and lorebooks based off of how much money they get. Lorebooks for Christ's sake, they should have already been written awhile ago, especially with such an experienced writer at the helm. Which means that they have content ready to go and are withholding it from people for money (on this alleged passion project), or a project 5 years in still doesn't have all the lore of the world figured out.
@OnceLostGames
@OnceLostGames 3 ай бұрын
We greatly appreciate everything that Indigo did for the project and have acknowledged that the team was not focused, but his leaving did serve as a wake-up call and more staff was brought on board including in key positions to make meaningful progress. We have plenty of experienced team members. This isn't a modding project. We are aware of the complexities of landing a publisher and were very reluctant to go the Kickstarter route until recently. The truth is that Daggerfall 2.0 needs to prove it has an audience, which is something the Kickstarter is helping to achieve, as well as getting us to a point that we have a solid showcase. If we cannot land a publisher, then we continue on as we have been updating our Early Access build. We are confident that the prologue chapter will offer plenty in terms of gameplay, narrative and replayability to satisfy our backers. Now, as far as backing, we understand the hesitancy and don't fault anyone who wants to wait until there is a finished product. Kickstarter is a risk and we make that clear. We also have taken steps to minimize that risk as much as possible, but it will never be fool proof.

I pledged for me and my girl, and I don't even think they can do it, unless they get some serious funding from a good producer; but I applaud ambition wherever I see it, and my hat's off to the actual creators of The Elder Scrolls. I'm 100% in their corner, and I wish them total success.

I'd like to be cautiously optimistic about Wayward Realms but I'm not sure yet if I want to back the Kickstarter. Of the 4 Kickstarters I ever pledged money to over the last 10 years, only one of them delivered completely and honestly on what they proposed which was Michael Mendheim's Mutant Football League.

Do you have a mods list anywhere for the mods you use when you play Daggerfall? Or do you only use Daggerfall Unity?

Its none of my business, but what tier of the campaign did you back?
@Zhakaron
@Zhakaron 3 ай бұрын
I've backed nothing yet because I paid double rent, professional movers, and a truck to move on top of just normal life expenses/bills and don't feel this is worth dipping into savings for. I'll back it after I'm paid. Probably $20-40. In terms of video games, we've got Dawntrail and Shadow of the Erdtree. That's not counting a whole host of indie games out around now too.

This is why I subscribed to you! What a fantastic set of news for the old guard of DF players! Unfortunately after the latest fiasco by many big studios, my heart now goes to Indie Studios and Modders, the ones who really want to carry the franchise it seems... After buying my latest setup I've doing little gaming of new titles for this very reason. Rather give this and things like Skywind a chance, dropped Starfield after -50 hours of gameplay... I hope someone gets the memo soon, thankfully numbers are tanking, so this time around we don't get the whole *"we need to reach more people"* set of bullcrap line anymore.

I agree. If the goal is to reach as many people as possible, then it's about delivering a product, and not a game anymore.

Stalker 2 also has plans on nonlinear narrative that are supposed to be amazing. I hope there is soon a boom in non linear storytelling

They started talking about this years ago, to the point that one guy on their team gave up because the main guys just weren't doing shit. Maybe they've only recently organized enough to get started, but I am skeptical.

Except its not Elder Scrolls 2 by any stretch, and to label it as such is an entire disservice to Daggerfall. Stop creaming yourself over what looks to be an some shitty media artwork on a Kickstarter. You all are going to be severely disappointed if this game ever releases.

Every one of these kiddos is going to have to have their own Shroud of the Avatar sooner or later. May as well be this time, or not. That's the great thing about not knowing the future.
