Senki - Bonus Episode - Zhang Weili - Kung Foot
Reflections on the martial arts- is a martial arts series which will feature and focus on various aspects and topics related to martial arts practices and their related cultures and expressions.
Following Zhang Weili's successful UFC title defense against Joanna Jedrzejczyk on March 7th 2020, here is an unseen section from my interview with Zhang Weili from December 2019. She suddenly asked about my feet as she has been focusing on development of her feet and connection using traditional Chinese martial arts methods and concepts.

Congratulations on the champ for beating her toughest and most skilled opponent in the division. Joanna brought her A Game and Weili dealt with it. She has won a lot of fans and showed everyone how skilled and tough she it. Zhang Weili is inspirational and a great role model for women and fighters alike. Go champ!!

Eager to learn and good observational skills, noticing and asking about things like this. I like that attitude a lot... 😌 👍 Thank you for sharing this little gem.

So funny that she called out your feet! Means 1) she's very observant and 2) your training shows through your general movement.

Interestingly enough, I've heard from a Pilates expert: when a person begins to get old and lose good posture, the first thing is affected is their feet. Now the recommendation for gripping the floor with the feet from stance training makes sense a little more.

Weili is so fascinating. Wish I spoke Mandarin so I didn't have to take her wisdom in through a translator.

I noticed Ms. Zhang's trainer pushing on her shoulders. I've seen this type of "testing" in other martial arts, and I wish to learn more about it, but I'm unsure what it's called. I would be very interested in both the anglicized spelling and chinese characters if someone possibly doesn't mind sharing. Thanks!

This is hyperarch training which has been systemized by Xie Chong, who is in this video. It is based on his experience with Taiji and traditional Chinese martial training methods.

Interesting. There's this trend called the "barefoot" shoes trend that's been going on for a number of years where the shoes are shaped like the foot, as opposed to rounded or pointy at the toe box, which allows the toes to naturally spread and gain more strength and stability... The shoes also typically have very thin and non-absorbent soles for better ground connection, and no rise in the heel to maintain a natural ankle alignment when standing in a neutral up right position and to maintain optimal skeletal alignment. The typical Feiyue Kung Fu shoes are similar in that they're flat soled, but they have rounded toes which don't let the toes to spread... I bring this up since this video is about feet, but I'm curious if you have any thoughts about this, if you train in bare feet (like standing in Santi), and if you think it really makes much of a difference to the quality of development?
