Thank you very much Samuel. This is probably the most important youtube video on gimbals. I have never used any kind of grip or mount for my iPhones. Now I have a new iPhone 14 Pro Max, and I started looking for grips, mounts, and finally gimbals. Everyone was talking about the OSMO's, as if they were the last word in affordable gimbals. Then I came across your videos comparing it to others, and I'm so very glad I did. I ordered the Smooth 5 from Amazon last night, before the Christmas rush, and it arrived here an hour ago! A very informative and useful review on the Gimbal. Liked your down to earth way of explaining all the features which were easy to understand. Let's hope that I can use them to my advantage. Seen your other reviews also like the one on dji pocket 2 which I am also using. The cinematic moves which you suggest are really very Helpful. The support is like zy cami app. It's a mess. The 3x3 panoramic photo doesn't even work. People are complaining since smooth 4. So after 3 years they still develop a good app.

Todas as imagens que você viu no vídeo são de minha autoria, nada do fabricante. Usei o firmware mais recente. A roda de zoom/foco é algo que eu nunca uso as duas ao mesmo tempo. Eu ou zoom ou foco, mas não os dois ao mesmo tempo. As lentes do telefone simplesmente não podem fazer esse movimento suavemente e, devido ao tamanho das lentes, não é surpresa. Isto foi útil? Deixe-me saber se você tem alguma dúvida.

I am more of an iPhone user but I will always recommend filmic pro as the camera app. It works great with Android and with the Smooth 5, other than timelapses, you can pretty much do with the zhiyun app and do everything on filmic pro. I hope this is helpful…

Great review! I'm amazed that I am buying the Zhiyun. I already have the DJI OM4 (the Zhiyun will replace it), Hohem Isteady V.2, and the G6 Max. They all serve different uses. I love the Hohem because of the AI Sensor. It's just great for filming alone. The Zhiyun will replace the DJI for a heavier rig - a case with lens. The DJI really isn't adequate for this purpose as it can't really use a lens without being a bit overloaded. It also really doesn't do "flashlight mode" without flipping it over. The G6 Max, even though it will work with my phone, is really there for a rigged up Sony ZV-1. Yup, 3 different gimbal seems kinda crazy, but I know I will use all 3 often for different purposes.

I also have a hohem isteady V2 which I use all the time for solo filming. What a great device. The G6 Max is hard to beat, to be honest... So much so that my next video is actually a head to head between the smooth 5 and the G6 Max. You might actually enjoy that video too... But you sound like you know what you're doing!

@@SamuelSotiega Yeah, the G6 Max is such a beast and a,total bargain given it's capacity. I also love that a the axis lock for transport and ease of balance. As for knowing what I'm doing, that is a work in progress.

Not at the moment, bit it will soon. But you don’t really need the integration to still use it with filmic pro. Just that accessing the menus or the job wheel won’t work until then. But for 90-95% of the time, you don’t really need it. But Zhiyun says it will soon be integrated..

just bought my first gimbal, a Hohem isteady V2, its primary for my daughter who is doing ALOT of Tiktok, and maybe ican use it for some workout where it follows me, but the primary reason was to create super smooth video creation when I am on vaction with my iphone 13 pro max! You just need to download it and when you start the app, it will automatically sync to the gimbal via bluetooth and you can then use the app. Is this what you meant?

I don’t think the native camera app does but again, I use iPhone and you might have another phone/platform snd then I don’t know…

Thank you Samuel for another awesome review!! I've been looking heavy at gimbals lately for both my iPhone 13 Pro Max and my GoPro Hero 10 in which I'll be using ND's on both. Your reviews, thoughts and comments on gimbals have been nothing less than awesome in my decision making. The Smooth 5 appears to be a pretty decent gimbal. As for some of the issues you mentioned, I'm confident Zhiyun will make some adjustments through a firmware update. Also, as you know, they have a great relationship with Filmic Pro therefore, I'm also confident this gimbal will have Filmics support sooner than later. It would be nice to see a workaround for the use of the GoPro as well.... we'll just have to wait and see. I've also been looking heavy at the G6 Max for a while now, especially after seeing all your video's on this gimbal. Only thing that has me hesitating on the G6 Max is that I've seen some reports of people having freeze issues while performing firmware updates. In addition, if it needs to be returned, it has to be sent to the manufacturer which has lead to long repair times. Have you come across any of this? Thank you again for this review and all of your other awesome tutorials and comparisons!! I'm certainly looking forward to your comparison between both of these gimbals! 😊👍

My next video is smooth 5 vs G6 Max. I think you’ll love that one. In regards to the G6 Max, I bought it off Amazon and I actually have to send it for repairs and yes, contacting Feiyutech directly means sending it to China. Not round the corner. But I reached out to the seller through Amazon and they have a repair shop local in the UK, where I live with a Max 10 day turnaround. That changes things to be honest… where about in the world are you? I can see if I can point you in the eight direction….

I couldn't find anyone selling on amazon . com that is not either feiyutech official or a company based in China. Ideally, you want a US-based vendor. Great review. I recently purchase the Zhiyun Smooth 5 gimbal and I currently have a Samsung S20. I downloaded the ZY Cami app and paired it with the gimbal. The zoom is working but when changing to the focus option it doesn't seem to be working. It switches but it's not letting me change the focus. Can you tell me what could be the issue?

I’m having trouble mounting my s21 ultra in vertical mode on zhiyun smooth 5, have you had any luck in doing so?

The phone might be a bit too large so all you need to do is to push it up a bit so it clears the roll axis bar. I have a 13 pro max and if I try to go from horizontal to vertical, sometimes It hits the roll axis bar, due to the phone’s overall size. I bump it up a bit to help it clear the bar and it works like a charm. Is this what you’re experiencing too?

I tried following the manuals instructions for the setup in vertical mode, and I could not get the phone to move properly after balancing it freely. Yes it does hit the roll axis bar and at times all the lights on the gimbal flash up and the power turns off.

The zhiyun crane M3 is smaller than the smooth 5, but will cost you more. I recently reviewed it, which might be of interest to you…. But I personally don’t know of a gimbal that has the mobility that the smooth 5 but on a smaller, more compact size. But I am not saying it doesn’t exist, I just don’t know about it…

I am not sure if I understand the question. The gimbal will record video in vertical mode that you can then upload directly to snapchat or Instagram. So you record video on the Zhiyun app, which stores to your phone’s photo/video folder, just like the default app on your phone. You can then upload the video via snapchar/ instagram app. Is this what you were looking for?

@@Affizwonder I don’t think you can inside snapchat app. As far as I know, it’s either the zhiyun app, the ZY Cami, or filmic pro which integrates the gimbal inside their app. I doubt snapchat integrates the gimbal, but it’s not something I know for sure.

Hello, thanks for you video. I bought mine and struggling with it. My setup is iphone 13 pro max with Polarpro litechaser case and filter. I am mainly struggling with the Lock mode, the mobile phone keeps moving and turning around and it’s not locked. Sometimes it flips out as well. I did balance the set up well before powering on the gimbal and I tried smaller phone with no filter and case and the issue was still there with the lock mode. Any advice is highly appreciated :)

So, got the Smooth 5 and have been using it and figuring out all the buttons. It's a great gimbal for sure. I have one question I can't figure out. There is a setting for switching between photo and video mode using the "M" button. I am assuming that means the menu button. While setting up the ZY Cami app, I set it to switch between photo and video, but doesn't work. Instead it switches between video and smart. Further, when you look in the gimbal settings the setting for the M button is grayed out. Any ideas?

well, mounting the phone should be ok, as this video shows you can even mount a gopro hero 10 kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGTSnmVsgcqBnc0 . However the zycami app does not support the iPhone 5, the oldest phone it supports is iPhone 8. See this www.zhiyun-tech.com/en/download/zycami and go to the bottom of the page.

@@SamuelSotiega Really thank you for all your clear and detailed explanations, it is very rare. So I also inquired and even the "Filmic pro" application does not support the Iphone 5s. Apparently "Filmic pro" will accept from Iphones 7. Suddenly, I unfortunately have the impression that no camera application will support this Iphone 5s... too bad. So I have one last question for you if you don't mind too much... The iphone 5s has a natural and "cinematic" video quality that I no longer find with these latest iphones (from the X, it deteriorates for me in terms of "cinema atmosphere") on the other hand, the internal stabilization of this 5s is a disaster... So by stabilizing this little iphone with this SMOOTH 5, I am well aware that without an application, I could not exploit all its possibilities, but according to you? Can you still use it and still enjoy some creativity like the "vortex" mode for example? or other creativity? thank you very much for reading me if this is the case and congratulations again for your very interesting and inspiring videos.... @@Hdd697 You can totally use all the gimbal modes to create some really cool shots. Don't be put off by it. The gimbal's modes as well as its operation are independent of the phone. You can still use the default camera app or see if you can find and download a legacy version of filmic pro that worked with the iphone5. It will be an older version with fewer features than the current one, but if you can find one (big if though) that might be a route. But if you are comfortable using the iPhone camera app, you are good to go!

Hello again Samuel , i received my Smooth 5 one week ago , i downloaded Camy App in my Android Note 9 mobile . I am facing a major issue that i need your help , opinion or advice to resolve it : The Gimbal & the interface do not recognize my mobile in every think relating to video filming ( vlogging / time lapse / hyperlapse / dolly zoom ) , they control only still photography ( Photo mode in menu ) , the button in gimbal & red button in interface do not respond to film a video ( Blocked , the interface shows " Recording Failed "), so actually the use of my gimbal is limited on Pan , Tilt & roll only . In still photography , no problem ( i should notify the Samsung Not 9 is mentioned in Smooth 5 Compatibility list ) : any advice , based on your high experience , to solve this issue Will Be Appreciated / thank you in advance .

yes, within the ZY Cami app. It is super easy. Just go to the timelapse section and at the top of the screen you can select up to 5 anchor/keyframe points, and you can also control a few other options. It is super easy and very well implemented,

You could do that I imagine… but you still have the physical thickness of the connector. If you are able to find a micro thin cable, then great, but as far as I know, they don’t make them…

As always great honest review. I just got my Snooth 5 and it replaced the G6Max because for now I don’t Users to heavy setup. Maybe in the future than, if they don’t release a G 7 Max the 6 is still an option. I would Livevideo get my hands on the Crane M3 , but way to expensive for my use, again right now. The Smooth 5 is a great gimbal for smartphones, and if you don't use heavy accessories, it is all you need. Plus, Zhiyun's app is better than Feiyutech's. You can indeed! You can change the gimbal modes without having to go into the app itself. You can use this gimbal with the default camera app or the zhiyun cami app. However, if you want to do things like moving timelapses, you will need to access the zhiyun app to set the motion, you can then decide if you want the timelapse done within the ziyun app or use the default app

You need to manually mount the gimbal in horizontal or manually spin/switch the mounting position from horizontal to vertical. It takes seconds, really. There might be a bit of rebalance adjustment but once to get the hang of it, it is a 5-10 second thing…

Actually, you’re spot on. I actually have a couple of those myself and they would totally do what you’re after. Now, the question is. Would the clipon clip/ adaptor on the receive fit in the cold shoe mount? Because that is crucial, from the photos I saw online it seems too wide to fit, but if you have the unit you can measure it yourself…

@@PoketCam yeah, I recall that. The one hing I miss in this gimbal is roll adjustment, you just don’t have it. I haven’t experienced any issues though. Sometimes it’s all about the actual fitting of the phone in the mount, and I certainly mention this in my next video smooth 5 vs G6 Max. If not 100% clear about this gimbal or another, I’d suggest you want for it…. It might answer many questions

I can't say if it is the best as there are many other gimbals and I haven't used all of them. But what I can tell you is that for vertical filming, I would not hesitate to use it myself. Of all the gimbals I have ever used and tested, it is the best for vertical filming, by a long mile. You literally have no restrictions of movement and there aren't many gimbals out there that can offer that. And you don't need to hold the gimbal in a weird or awkward way. With the smooth 5, you hold the gimbal the same way whether horizontal or vertical. That is super cool.

Thanks for the excellent video! Have you or anyone noticed the motor sounds being very loud? I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max with a case and just tested with no lens on. It captures a lot of the motor noise unfortunately. Is my only option to add an external mic? It seems like a great gimbal otherwise from my testing but the motor sound ruins videos :(

If you get the motors in the recording, my advice is that you changed for a gimbal like the G6 Max, which is the one I actually use, and that is not an issue at all. It is unfortunate, yes. I always use mics for my recordings, so that is not an issue, but if the onboard sound recording is important to you, I don't think you will be happy with the smooth 5, in my opinion...

Have watched that awesome comparison video of yours a few times already actually, but thought the Smooth 5 would be ok given what I needed (and wanted something not as heavy). Might have to exchange for a G6 Max now given the motor sound issue. Can you clarify why the G6 won’t have this motor sound issue? Is it because the motor is not in the same placement as the Smooth 5 where it’s right against the iPhone’s mic, or is it because I can mount the phone upside down like you mentioned in the other video? On the other hand, have you tried the Moza Mini P? Would be curious to know how that compares with the G6 Max from you. Thanks again for all your awesome content. Watched many of your videos already and you are always honest and helpful!

@@davien628 i haven’t tried any moza gimbals. The reason you won’t hear the motors in the G6 max is because it has a payload of 1.2kg which way more than the smooth 5, and I guess it has better internal components… I use the G6 max as my main smartphone gimbal and never had any issues, hence I can recommend it without any fear than anyone will come back to me saying my advice was crap.

I've got this gimbal and Feiyutech G6 Max. With the the Smooth 5, I noticed if I tilt it too far left or right in PF or Lock, the gimbal can go nuts on me. Same if I go out of Vortex mode in to PF. Fine if I go from Vortex to POV. The light that comes with combo seems a bit pointless and ashame it isn't duel colour. I say pointless, as there other offerings out there such as RGB and I wish it had a cold shoe adapter connector instead of the proprietary one they have. The magnetic colour gels seem easy to lose. So I think paying £60 more for combo doesn't seem worth it. Oh and trigger button on my one stopped working so sending it back. Also not sure how valuable the pro subscription card is with combo package Personally, I feel the G6 Max is better option, similarly price to Smooth 5 combo and higher payload plus can use it for other types of cameras like action or mirrorless. The winning part of it for me is that I can control the pan, tilt, roll axis independently using the wheel for more fine creative control options

@@SamuelSotiega might also be worth comparing this with Zhiyun M2 and M3 too. Casing, storage, transportation, setting up, and software integration. The cases from earlier generations seem better than the Styrofoam cases they use now and not as environmental friendly. Like why have any case if it isn't useful and then people for whatever stuff the gimbal into their bag. I think that affected my trigger button

I have bought something very similar to the rode microphone do you know the one at Clips on A tee shirt i’m trying to find something Will mountthe receiver it has to go into a 3.5 jack in the bottom of the phone and then connects to the receiver so I’m trying to mount the receiver on the side of my smooth five Gimble do you have any ideas I don’t know how to send you a picture but I think I found something on Amazon that would work.

@@MadMax-vy9hk You do have a 1/4" thread on the side so as long as you can find a mount with a 1/4" screw... I tried to look up your wireless kit but I can't find any photos of the back of it. Only the front. I don't know if there is a thread on the wireless receiver. You will need an apple TRRS to lightning cable adaptor though.....

Personally, it depends on what you intend to use. As a gimbal, the smooth 5 is way better. But if you need to film yourself, the AI sensor on the hohem’s is way, way better, in my opinion. What you plan to do, and I can give you a better answer? Also, do you use a lot of accessories or just the phone?

@@arturotlk if you don’t plan to use accessories, the smooth 5 is all you need plus it works both horizontal and vertical. You can go for more intricate gimbals, like the crane M3 or the G6 Max, but they cost a lot more… although the G6 max is currently on a discounted rate, you might want to consider that one too… but if you settle for the smooth 5, you will be happy, guaranteed. Just make sure you buy from a place that has a return policy in case you don’t like it, so you can easily return it and get a refund, if at all possible where you live.

I have to sort of agree with you. In the video I use a 13 pro max and a sandmarc wide angle lens. That is, with a clipon ring, not a case because that would probably be too much for the gimbal. This is why I do say that the max payload is 380g and I highly recommend, if you are the kind of shooter that uses accessories, that this gimbal might jot be it. Did you miss that bit?

@Samuel Sotiega I am simple casual shooter with family, pets and travel but enjoy tech and began using video editing software in 2003. Your advice has been very helpful and appreciated! Though leaning towards the G6Max, I recently picked up the Smooth 5 on an Amazon flash sale for $140. I am passing on my experience so far. Disappointed certain features in the apps require a paid subscription but still I am generally pleased so far. I can easily access functions directly from the gimbal controls on my Galaxy S20. I think Samsung restricts and limits to 30 fps and a few other things regardless of gimbal and third party apps. Filmic cannot access all of my cameras capabilities. With the Smooth 5, I am able to control all functions except initially accessing manual settings from the iso button on the center wheel. The settings are all displayed on the bottom left of the phones display and once touching either the shutter speed. Iso or white balance, I can then scroll, select and adjust those settings using the scroll wheel and it's center button. One issue in Sta Cami is when turning the side wheel to zoom or focus, the phone emits a noise similar to a Geiger counter. I need to mute the volume to avoid recording the sound. This is not the case when zooming with the ZY Cami app but that app does not let me use the wheel to focus and has less functionality of the gimbal controls. But ZY Cami has certain features unavailable in Sta Cami. I'm currious about the editing templates and intend to experiment with them which hopefully could lwork for most of my needs.
